Installation of a Sharp wall-mounted heat pump in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie

In Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie, a duplex owner wanted to replace their old air conditioning system with a more efficient heating solution that was quieter and, above all, more economical year-round. Our AirGreen team recommended the installation of aSharp wall-mounted heat pump , a modern inverter system using a low-environmental-impact A2L refrigerant, perfectly suited to Montreal's climate.

A typical side courtyard project in Rosemont

The house is a typical Rosemont brick construction: a south-facing wall overlooking a side courtyard with a paved driveway, a small garden, and a narrow passage between two buildings. In this type of configuration, we must:

  • free up as much floor space as possible for circulation;

  • respect the necessary clearances for condenser ventilation;

  • limit the transmission of vibrations to the masonry;

  • protect the equipment from snow, ice and splashes.

The client's objective: to obtain a reliable system to air condition the entire floor in summer and provide highly efficient supplementary heating in winter, while remaining visually and audibly discreet for him… and for his neighbors.

Equipment selection: Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump

For this project, we installed a Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump of approximately 18,000 BTU, a typical capacity for a well-insulated, medium-sized home in Montreal.

This Sharp model is distinguished by:

  • Inverter technology that continuously modulates power according to actual demand;

  • a new generation A2L refrigerant (R-32) with a lower global warming potential than the older R-410A;

  • quiet operation, both indoors and outdoors;

  • excellent performance in low-temperature heating, ideal for Quebec winters.

Inside, the wall-mounted unit (not visible in the photo) has been positioned to ensure good air circulation in the main living areas, while respecting the existing layout of the dwelling.

Condenser installation: wall bracket and snow protection

The photo shows the Sharp outdoor unit mounted on a galvanized steel wall bracket anchored directly into the brick. This installation method offers several advantages in an area like Rosemont:

  • Clearance from the ground : the condenser is raised, which keeps it above the accumulation of snow and ice in winter. This also facilitates the drainage of condensation water in summer.

  • Mechanical protection : installed above the drainage stone strip, the condenser is protected from lawnmowers, snow shovels and dirt.

  • Freeing up ground space : the side courtyard remains clear for movement, taking out the rubbish or working in the garden.

  • Aesthetics : the parallel positioning to the brick wall and the chosen height allow for a clean and discreet visual line.

We use fixings sized to easily support the weight of the unit, taking into account wind and snow loads, as well as any potential vibrations. Anti-vibration pads are integrated under the unit's feet to limit noise transmission to the wall during compressor operation.

Drainage and clearance management around the unit

Beneath the condenser, a band of crushed stone can be seen along the foundation. This detail is more important than it appears:

  • It facilitates the drainage of condensation water in summer;

  • It prevents the formation of mud and splashes on the facade;

  • It limits the regrowth of vegetation directly under the unit, which could restrict air circulation.

We consistently follow Sharp's manufacturer's clearance recommendations around the unit:

  • lateral clearance from the wall;

  • free space at the rear for air intake;

  • clearance at the front for the discharge of hot or cold air.

This ensures optimal performance and extends the compressor's lifespan.

Refrigeration and electrical connections: safety and cleanliness

The photo shows the insulated refrigeration lines and the carefully secured power cable . The main points to highlight are:

  • The refrigerant lines are insulated with high-quality foam, protected by tape and a cover at the wall exit, in order to protect them from UV, shocks and weathering.

  • The passage through the masonry is protected by a metal piece and sealed to prevent water infiltration.

  • The electrical wiring is securely attached, with a dedicated circuit breaker inside and a disconnect device near the unit in accordance with current standards.

  • The visible A2L label indicates the use of a modern refrigerant, requiring careful installation by certified refrigeration technicians – something our team is perfectly capable of.

The whole setup provides a clean, legible and easily accessible installation for any future maintenance or service operations.

Four-season comfort in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie

With this Sharp wall-mounted heat pump, the customer now benefits from:

  • efficient and quiet air conditioning to cope with the increasingly frequent heat waves in Montreal;

  • efficient heating even at very low temperatures, allowing for reduced use of the main heating system and substantial savings;

  • better control of indoor humidity , contributing to comfort and protection of the building;

  • of an optimized electricity bill , thanks to the Inverter compressor which works mainly at low speed rather than on/off.

The heat pump thus intelligently complements the existing system, while increasing the value of the property.
