A FUJITSU installation designed to heat a space efficiently, where every positioning detail matters

In Saint-Louis, we completed an installation that clearly illustrates an aspect often underestimated when choosing a wall-mounted heat pump: the quality of the result depends as much on the selected equipment as on its location and how it is integrated into the building.

In the photo of this installation, the FUJITSU AIRSTAGE Orion XLTH+ indoor unit is installed on a section of drywall immediately next to a window, in an area where the ceiling remains open and the joists and certain mechanical components are visible. This configuration provides a good sense of the planning involved in a HVAC installation in a room under renovation, a basement being finished, a workshop, or a space whose surfaces are not yet completely enclosed.

Our goal was not simply to mount a unit on the wall. The appliance had to be positioned at a height that would allow for good air distribution while taking into account the window, the ceiling structure, the room’s potential finishing work, and the routing required for the connections.

The result is a clean, functional installation: the wall-mounted unit is unobstructed, accessible for maintenance, and positioned to distribute air throughout the space without being enclosed in an alcove or immediately confined beneath a horizontal structure.

Why the FUJITSU Orion XLTH+ Is Particularly Interesting in Quebec

The FUJITSU AIRSTAGE Orion XLTH+ range is designed for regions where a heat pump must do much more than cool for a few weeks during the summer. It is intended to provide heating in cold weather down to an outdoor temperature of -30 °C, which is particularly relevant for an installation in Saint-Louis and for homeowners in Montréal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore and the South Shore.

According to the technical documentation provided by Fujitsu, this series uses R-32 refrigerant. Its global warming potential indicated in the documentation is 675, compared with 2,088 for R-410A, representing an announced reduction of 68%. The range is also equipped with an Inverter compressor, which modulates its operation rather than simply running on a traditional on-off cycle.

This modulation is important in a Quebec home. A properly sized heat pump can reduce its output when demand is low, then increase its operation when the outdoor temperature drops or when the room needs to quickly return to its setpoint temperature.

The goal is to achieve:

  • more stable indoor temperatures;
  • fewer abrupt changes in comfort;

A range that maintains impressive heating capacity in extreme cold

The technical specifications for the Orion XLTH+ list three capacities in this family: 09KTAP1, 12KTAP1, and 15KTAP1. The photograph alone does not reliably confirm which of these three units was installed in Saint-Louis, so we avoid arbitrarily assigning a specific capacity to the visible unit.

The range nevertheless offers some very interesting features.

For the 09KTAP1 model, the nominal cooling capacity is 9,000 BTU/h, while the nominal heating capacity reaches 12,000 BTU/h. The 12KTAP1 model offers 12,000 BTU/h in cooling and 15,300 BTU/h in nominal heating. Finally, the 15KTAP1 model is rated at 14,500 BTU/h in cooling and 17,400 BTU/h in nominal heating.

But it is primarily the low-temperature heating data that draws our attention in the Quebec context.

According to the Fujitsu technical table, at -30 °C, the maximum heating capacity still corresponds to:

  • 113% of the nominal capacity for the 09KTAP1;
  • 103 % for the 12KTAP1;
  • 101 % for the 15KTAP1.

At -26 °C, the figures shown are 147%, 128%, and 116%, respectively.

This helps explain why low-temperature performance is much more important than the simple number of BTUs displayed in large print on a sales sheet. When we recommend a heat pump in Montreal or Greater Montreal, we examine the capacity actually available when temperatures drop, not just the nominal performance measured under much easier conditions.

High energy efficiency depending on the selected capacity

FUJITSU also announces high seasonal efficiency ratings for this series.

The technical specifications indicate, among other things, a TRÈS2 of 33.5 for the 09KTAP1, 31.5 for the 12KTAP1, and 28.7 for the 15KTAP1. All three versions are identified in the documentation as meeting ENERGY STAR ratings, including the categories designated ES, ESCC, and ESME.

For a homeowner comparing different wall-mounted heat pumps in Quebec, this data must nevertheless be put into context. The model with the highest performance rating is not automatically the best choice for every home. Sizing must be based on the heating load, the actual area served, insulation, the number of windows, solar exposure, room layout, and heat losses.

Installing a heat pump that is too large can be just as problematic as installing one that is too small.

What the photo of the installation in Saint-Louis really shows us

This installation is particularly interesting because the room is not presented as a finished catalog space.

We can see an open ceiling with exposed joists, a window to the left of the unit, and a drywall wall whose joints and fasteners are still visible. This means that integrating the heat pump had to take into account not only the current state of the room, but also how it would look once the work was completed.

The indoor unit was positioned:

  • high enough to allow good air distribution;
  • to the right of the window in order to preserve a usable section of wall;
  • with clearance above the unit;
  • so that it remains accessible for future cleaning and servicing;
  • without directly encroaching on the window opening.

For us, this type of project is representative of an installation where coordination with renovation work is important. When the ceiling and certain walls are still open, we can often plan the routing of the refrigerant lines, communication wiring, and drainage more intelligently.

Why the indoor unit’s location should never be chosen at random

A wall-mounted heat pump moves a significant volume of air. To provide uniform comfort, it must be placed where its airflow can effectively reach the occupied area.

A common mistake is to choose the location solely because the wall is unobstructed.

We instead assess:

  • the geometry of the room;
  • the presence of doors and corridors;
  • the windows;
  • the available height;
  • obstacles that could interrupt the airflow;
  • the possible location of the outdoor unit;
  • the path of the lines;
  • condensate drainage;
  • accessibility for maintenance.

In the Saint-Louis photo, the presence of an unfinished ceiling also makes coordination with anything that might eventually be added important: a suspended ceiling, drywall, lighting, storage, or other equipment.

A quiet indoor unit suited to living spaces

Sound level is another important characteristic of the Orion XLTH+ series.

FUJITSU indicates indoor operation as low as 23 dB(A) in quiet mode for the 9,000 and 12,000 BTU versions, and up to 26 dB(A) for the 15,000 BTU version. Several fan speeds are available: automatic, high, medium-high, medium, medium-low, low, and quiet.

This flexibility is useful in a family basement, bedroom, home office, or relaxation area where acoustic comfort quickly becomes just as important as temperature.

According to Fujitsu documentation, the indoor unit is also equipped with highly corrosion-resistant copper ProCore coils, a washable filter, and a backlit remote control.

Built-in Wi-Fi and remote control

The series features built-in Wi-Fi connectivity for remote monitoring and control through the AIRSTAGE mobile environment described by Fujitsu.

For many AirGreen customers, this feature has become much more than a gimmick.

It allows users to adjust the temperature without being in front of the unit, prepare the home’s comfort before returning, and more easily manage certain periods of absence.

The platform also offers more advanced integration options. The documentation mentions compatibility, through the appropriate interfaces, with control solutions including BACnet and Modbus. This type of functionality can be relevant in certain commercial projects, multi-unit buildings, or buildings equipped with more advanced automation.

Installation details that make a difference with a FUJITSU wall-mounted heat pump

Compact 1/4 in. and 3/8 in. piping

A particularly useful technical detail for installers and homeowners planning a renovation concerns the diameter of the refrigerant lines.

For the three capacities listed in the Orion XLTH+ documentation, Fujitsu specifies:

  • liquid line: 1/4 in.;
  • gas line: 3/8 in..

The stated minimum length is 10 ft, while the maximum length can reach 66 ft, with a maximum vertical difference of 49 ft.

These details are important when an indoor unit is installed in a basement, on an upper floor, above a window, or relatively far from the intended location of the outdoor compressor.

In a real installation, we do not aim to use the maximum length simply because it is permitted. A short, logical, and clean run is generally preferable when the building’s configuration allows it.

A base pan heater designed for winter

FUJITSU documentation mentions a base pan heater on the outdoor unit, an element specifically designed for extreme cold conditions.

Why is this relevant?

A heat pump periodically produces water during its winter defrost cycles. In our climate, this water can quickly freeze around or beneath the outdoor unit if the installation is not properly planned.

Outdoor positioning must therefore take into account:

  • snow accumulation;
  • drainage of defrost water;
  • the height of the unit above the ground;
  • the possibility of ice;
  • access for maintenance;
  • clearance around the heat exchanger.

An excellent unit installed too close to the ground or in a location constantly buried by snow can lose a significant portion of its benefits.

The mistake to avoid: choosing BTUs based solely on floor area

We regularly meet homeowners who want a 12,000, 15,000, or 18,000 BTU heat pump simply because a table found online associates a certain square footage with a given capacity.

These tables can serve as a starting point, but they do not replace a building analysis.

Two rooms with the same floor area can have completely different needs. A room with three exterior walls, several windows, and average insulation will lose more heat than a space surrounded by heated rooms.

In Saint Louis, the window immediately adjacent to the heat pump is precisely one of the factors that affects the room’s heat load.

According to the technical specifications:

  • the 09KTAP1 requires a 15 A circuit breaker;
  • the 12KTAP1 requires 20 A;
  • the 15KTAP1 also requires 20 A.

It is important to check the electrical panel before installation. The fact that a unit is compact does not mean it can simply be connected to any existing circuit.

A professional HVAC installation must take the manufacturer’s requirements and the building’s actual electrical configuration into account.

A Renovation Installation Also Offers Advantages

A room that is still being finished, like the one photographed in Saint-Louis, presents certain aesthetic challenges, but it can also offer greater flexibility.

Before everything is closed up, it may be possible to plan the routing of the lines and wiring more effectively. This can avoid unnecessary trim, limit certain finishing work, and allow for a more discreet integration.

That is why, when a homeowner is planning both a renovation and the installation of a wall-mounted heat pump, we recommend coordinating the two projects from the outset.

However, these features only reach their full potential when the unit is properly selected, positioned, and installed.

For a climate like Quebec's, this heating range is particularly relevant.

The goal, however, remains to select the right capacity for the home. The Orion XLTH+ series offers several sizes precisely because needs vary from one project to another.

For this Saint-Louis installation, the available space, proximity to the window, open ceiling structure, and room finishes all had to be considered to properly integrate the FUJITSU wall-mounted unit into the building.
