Installation of a Sharp wall-mounted heat pump in Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension
In Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension, we installed a Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump above an interior door to optimize air distribution in the apartment. Four-season comfort, energy efficiency, and a clean installation: discover how AirGreen adapts Sharp systems to the everyday lives of Montrealers.

Take a tour of the installation
Each number is a point we check on site. Switch between summer and winter to watch air and heat move.
In summer, the outdoor unit rejects the house's heat outside.

Mounted level on a wall plate, high enough for the air to reach the whole room, with enough space around it to slide the filters out easily.
The refrigerant lines, the communication cable and the drain go through the wall in a single opening, sealed against water, cold air and insects.
Two insulated copper pipes connect the two units. Outside, a line cover can protect them from sun, knocks and weather.
A shut-off switch near the outdoor unit isolates it safely for service. It must stay accessible at all times.
The compressor and the fan. In heating mode it captures heat from the outdoor air, even in winter, and moves it inside.
On the ground or on the wall, it keeps the unit above accumulated snow. The unit stays clear and defrost water can drain away.
The fan needs to blow freely. Storage, a fence or a wall too close, and efficiency drops while noise goes up.
In a bright apartment in Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension, our team recently installed a new generationSharp wall-mounted heat pump . The owner wanted an all-in-one solution for heating and cooling their main living area, without cluttering the floor space or compromising the interior aesthetics.
We proposed a Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump, 12,000 BTU, R-32 (A2L) refrigerant , perfectly suited to the dimensions of the room and the Montreal climate.
A typical Villeray apartment project
The apartment is located in a typical Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension residential building: standard-height ceilings, molded interior doors, and rooms arranged in a row. The main challenge was to:
-
optimize air circulation in the living area (living room and dining room),
-
preserve traffic flow under the doors and in the corridor.
-
and avoid overloading walls already used for furniture.
We therefore chose to install the Sharp wall-mounted unit above an interior double door. This positioning frees up wall space at eye level, while also providing excellent airflow to the rest of the home.
Machine type and main characteristics
The chosen solution is a Sharp wall-mounted heat pump , ZU1 series, using a high-efficiency inverter compressor and R-32 refrigerant classified A2L . In practical terms, this means:
-
High energy efficiency : the compressor continuously modulates its power rather than operating in on/off mode.
-
Greater comfort : the temperature remains stable, without large fluctuations.
-
Reduced environmental impact : R-32 has a lower global warming potential than older refrigerants.
-
Controlled safety : the refrigerant charge is calculated and respected according to A2L standards, which ensures safe use in residential environments.
For this dwelling, a capacity of approximately 12,000 BTU offers an excellent compromise between summer comfort (efficient air conditioning) and supplementary or primary heating in the fall, spring and for a good part of the winter.
A thoughtful interior positioning
The photo clearly shows the Sharp wall-mounted head installed just above a door frame. This choice is not insignificant:
-
The installation height allows the hot air (in heating mode) to distribute more evenly in the room before rising, which improves the feeling of comfort.
-
In air conditioning mode, the cool air is directed towards the center of the room without blowing directly on the occupants, thanks to the adjustable motorized flap .
-
The passage under the door facilitates air circulation to adjacent rooms , which maximizes the efficiency of the heat pump throughout the entire dwelling.
We took care to respect the clearances recommended by Sharp between the top of the unit and the ceiling to ensure proper air return. The electrical wiring is neatly concealed, and the condensate drainage system has been designed to prevent any moisture from appearing on the walls.
Comfort, quiet and air quality
Sharp wall-mounted heat pumps are distinguished by their very low noise level . In this apartment in Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension, this translates to:
-
quiet operation during the day, even when the machine increases its power;
-
a night mode which reduces the fan speed and dims the indicator lights;
-
a comfortable atmosphere, without constant buzzing, ideal for teleworking or rest.
In addition, the wall-mounted unit incorporates washable filters that are easily accessible by simply opening the top panel. We explained to the customer how:
-
Remove and clean the filters.
-
maintain free air inlets and outlets,
-
and visually inspect the unit to ensure optimal operation.
Some Sharp models also offer an ionizing function which helps to reduce certain suspended particles and improve indoor air quality, a welcome feature in urban environments.
Heating performance for Montreal winter
In Montreal, and particularly in a neighbourhood like Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension, winters can be harsh. The Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump is designed to maintain good performance at low temperatures.
-
It provides efficient heating even in sub-zero temperatures .
-
It helps reduce reliance on electric baseboard heaters .
-
and it helps to lower the electricity bill by transferring heat rather than producing it solely through resistance.
In this project, the heat pump is integrated into the overall heating plan of the dwelling: it covers the majority of needs during mild and intermediate periods, while the existing systems take over during extreme cold.
Installation details and compliance
During this installation, we notably:
-
checked the strength of the load-bearing wall to support the wall head;
-
installed a suitable metal support , anchored according to best practices;
-
carefully made the hole for the refrigeration lines , sealing it properly to prevent air leaks;
-
tested the refrigerant circuit for leaks, then proceeded with vacuuming and charging according to Sharp's specifications;
-
validated the operating parameters (pressure, intensity, temperatures) in air conditioning mode and heating mode.
Everything was done in compliance with the Building Code , current electrical standards and the manufacturer's technical recommendations.
Comprehensive support from AirGreen
Beyond the physical installation, our team supported the client at every stage:
-
Assessment of needs based on the surface area, orientation and insulation of the dwelling.
-
Advice on the appropriate capacity and choosing the Sharp model.
-
Explanation of how the remote control works , the available modes (Auto, Heat, Cool, Dry, Fan), and the recommended settings to optimize energy savings.
-
Transmission of manufacturer warranty information and best maintenance practices.
We also offer a regular maintenance service to maintain the performance of the heat pump, extend its lifespan and prevent breakdowns during periods of extreme cold.

The big day, step by step
The main steps of this kind of job at AirGreen. Every house has its quirks: the estimate brings them out.
We look at the room, the outside wall, the line route and where the outdoor unit will go. That is where the capacity gets chosen.
Model, capacity and price, in writing. We also check whether the model qualifies for assistance programs.
Floors and furniture protected, wall plate position marked level, wall opening located.
A single opening, with the slope the drain needs to flow outside.
Set on a stand raised above the snow, with the clearances the manufacturer requires.
Connected, insulated and protected. The opening is then sealed against water, cold air and insects.
A dedicated circuit and an accessible disconnect near the outdoor unit.
Leak test, vacuum, then start-up and a check of heating and cooling.
Remote, modes, filters: we show you the essentials before we leave.

What would it look like at your place?
Two quick checks with real numbers: what heat costs, and what your current heaters add up to in BTU/h.
Conversion: 1 W = 3.412 BTU/h. An indication, not a load calculation: baseboards and furnaces are often stronger than the real need, and they can stay as backup. AirGreen confirms the capacity on site.

Your own project, step by step
What to do, season by season
Three habits per season for this unit. They take a few minutes and prevent many calls.
- Clean the indoor unit's filters.
- Clear leaves and debris left on the outdoor unit by winter.
- Test cooling before the first hot days.
- Clean the filters more often when the unit runs a lot.
- Keep plants away from the outdoor unit.
- Check that no water drips from the indoor unit.
- Rake the leaves around the outdoor unit.
- Test heating before the first cold days.
- Book periodic maintenance before winter.
- Keep snow away from the stand and the front of the unit.
- Let the unit defrost: it is normal.
- Never hit the ice on the fins; call us if the unit stays iced up.
Is your home ready?
Check what applies at your place. A "no" is not a refusal: it is what we sort out during the estimate.
Four statements: true or false?
It all comes down to details you have just seen.
1. In heating mode, the outdoor unit can produce water.
During defrost cycles. That water must drain away without forming ice.
2. You pick the capacity with a simple square-footage rule.
Windows, insulation, orientation and how the room is used all count. Capacity is chosen on site.
3. A multi-zone connects several indoor heads to a single condenser.
One head per room, all on the same condenser. Each room keeps its own temperature.
4. The disconnect can sit behind the patio furniture.
It must stay accessible: it is what shuts the unit off for service.
