For this project, our AirGreen team was tasked with modernizing the comfort of a residential building in Plateau-Mont-Royal through the installation of aSharp wall-mounted heat pump . The building is typical of the area: low-rise structure, flat roof covered with gravel, and several apartments served by individual air conditioning systems.
The photo clearly shows the Sharp Eco Inverter outdoor unit, installed on the roof among other devices. Our mission: to add this new equipment safely, sustainably, and perfectly suited to the realities of Montreal's climate.
The system choice: Sharp Eco Inverter wall-mounted heat pump (ZU1 series)
The owner wanted:
-
To offer its tenants four-season comfort ;
-
Reduce operating costs compared to older, cooling-only air conditioners;
-
To gradually modernize the building's facilities without major work inside.
We therefore opted for a Sharp Eco Inverter wall-mounted heat pump , from a range comparable to the Sharp ZU1 :
-
Inverter technology to modulate power according to demand;
-
High-efficiency compressor for energy savings in both air conditioning and heating;
-
Quiet operation, ideal for an apartment building;
-
Robust design to withstand extreme outdoor conditions (wind, snow, ice).
Inside, the heat pump supplies a Sharp wall head installed in the main living area of the dwelling, which allows a good portion of the area to be covered with a single unit.
A flat roof in Plateau: constraints and opportunities
Installing a heat pump on a flat roof in Montreal presents its own set of technical challenges, which we manage on a daily basis:
-
Roof membrane protection
The roof is covered with a membrane and gravel. It is imperative never to puncture or crush the membrane.-
We placed the Sharp unit on a self-supporting steel stand , itself installed on distribution pads which prevent any pressure points on the roof.
-
The rails are arranged parallel to the drainage slopes so as not to impede the flow of water.
-
-
Clearances and air circulation
The performance of a heat pump depends heavily on the quality of air circulation around the outdoor unit.-
The Sharp condenser is installed high up on a rigid support , which promotes free and unobstructed air intake.
-
We have respected the minimum clearances in relation to other equipment on the roof (vents, boxes, other condensers), in order to avoid the recirculation of hot or cold air.
-
-
Winter conditions
On a flat roof in Plateau-Mont-Royal, snow can accumulate quickly.-
Raising the unit onto a support allows it to be above the average snow level .
-
The chosen position takes into account wind blowing zones to limit the accumulation of snowdrifts around the heat pump.
-
Installation details: stability, safety and maintenance
Structural support and vibration damping
In the photo, you can clearly see:
-
A robust metal chassis , anchored on skids;
-
A perfectly level installation is essential for the proper functioning of the compressor.
We have added anti-vibration elements to reduce the transmission of noise and vibration to the structure and lower housing units.
Power supply and protections
Next to the Sharp unit, there is a metal box containing the electrical protection devices :
-
Circuit breaker suitable for the power of the heat pump;
-
Code-compliant proximity disconnect switch;
-
Cables run through conduits protected against the elements.
This configuration allows for rapid intervention during maintenance or diagnosis, while ensuring the safety of the occupants.
Refrigeration connections and drainage
The refrigeration lines and condensate drain are routed into the building via existing service routes or carefully sealed penetrations:
-
Proper insulation of refrigerant lines to limit losses;
-
The drainage slope was respected to prevent any water accumulation in the pipes.
Indoor comfort: air conditioning in summer, gentle heat in winter
Even though the photo only shows the roof, the real impact is felt mainly inside the homes:
-
In summer, tenants enjoy fast and stable air conditioning , even during Montreal heat waves.
-
During the off-season and part of the winter, the Sharp heat pump provides very efficient heating , often more economical than electric baseboard heaters.
-
Inverter technology allows a constant temperature to be maintained without fluctuations, for more natural comfort.
Thanks to the smart remote control, occupants can program schedules and easily adjust operating modes (heating, air conditioning, dehumidification, ventilation).
Energy efficiency and sustainability
By replacing a cooling-only unit with a Sharp Eco Inverter wall-mounted heat pump , the homeowner benefits from:
-
With better overall energy efficiency , since the same machine provides both heating and air conditioning;
-
Lower operating costs over the year;
-
A direct contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions , by using more efficient heating technology.
Installation on a flat roof, when done correctly, also makes it easier to:
-
Periodic maintenance (clear access for technicians);
-
Noise is channeled away from windows and balconies, thus improving the acoustic comfort of the occupants.
An example of gradual modernization in Plateau-Mont-Royal
This construction site perfectly illustrates the reality of many buildings on the Plateau:
-
Several accommodations;
-
Flat roof with various amenities;
-
There is a need to gradually modernize the air conditioning and heating systems, unit by unit .
By installing a Sharp wall-mounted heat pump in each dwelling, the owner:
-
Offers personalized comfort to each occupant;
-
Makes the building more attractive on the rental market ;
-
Spread the investment over several years, while improving the overall energy performance.
Why entrust your Sharp heat pump to AirGreen?
At AirGreen, we support owners of residential buildings and condos throughout Montreal:
