A triple-zone installation designed to heat and cool three spaces without cluttering the walls
At Saint-Pie, we installed a Fujitsu AIRSTAGE Aquila XLTH triple-zone heat pump, a particularly interesting configuration when a home has several rooms that do not respond to temperature changes in the same way. Rather than trying to impose a uniform temperature throughout the house from a single distribution point, the multi-zone system allows heating and cooling to be distributed among several indoor units.
The photo of this installation shows one of the Fujitsu AIRSTAGE wall-mounted units installed by our AirGreen team. The result is intentionally understated: the unit is mounted high on a light-colored wall, near the ceiling, with no visible piping or wiring around it. This visual integration is especially appealing in a room where the goal is to keep the walls clear and prevent an HVAC installation from drawing unnecessary attention.
In this triple-zone heat pump project in Saint-Pie, the challenge was therefore not simply connecting three indoor units to one outdoor unit. We also had to consider airflow in each zone, equipment sizing, line routing, and the interior finish.
A wall-mounted unit that truly blends into the room
One detail immediately stands out in the photo: the Fujitsu indoor unit is installed very high on an unobstructed wall, with considerable open space in front of it.
This positioning is advantageous for several reasons.
Heated or cooled air can be directed into the room without being immediately blocked by a tall piece of furniture. The lower louver can direct the airflow toward the occupied space, while the high installation keeps the wall available for furniture.
We also notice the absence of a long, exposed line cover beneath the unit. In some installations, the routing of the refrigerant lines requires several feet of visible line-set cover indoors. Here, the finished result allows the unit to appear almost independent of the network connecting it to the rest of the system.
This type of result requires careful planning even before the wall mounting plate is installed.
We need to know where the following can run:
- the refrigerant lines;
- the communication wiring;
- the power supply required by the configuration;
- the condensate drain;
- the connections required to the outdoor unit.
A wall-mounted unit may appear perfectly centered in a photo, but what is behind the wall matters just as much as what is visible in front.
Why choose a Fujitsu triple-zone heat pump?
A multi-zone heat pump allows several indoor units to be connected to a single outdoor unit. In a triple-zone configuration, three spaces can each have their own air-distribution unit and temperature setting.
Fujitsu documentation for AIRSTAGE H Series Aquila systems confirms this flexibility. The manufacturer offers outdoor units rated at 18,000, 24,000, 36,000, and 45,000 BTU/h that can be paired with different families of indoor units: wall-mounted units, Slim Duct units, compact cassettes, and Mid Static Duct units. A 24,000 BTU/h family outdoor unit can be configured with up to three indoor units, while higher-capacity models allow more zones depending on the permitted combinations.
This architecture offers considerable flexibility when the three rooms do not require the same capacity.
For example, a small bedroom may receive an indoor unit with a lower capacity than one installed in a large living area. There is therefore no need to install three identical units simply because they are part of the same system.
BTUs for a triple-zone system must be calculated intelligently
This is one of the most misunderstood aspects of multi-zone heat pumps.
In its combination tables, Fujitsu lists wall-mounted indoor units with several nominal capacities, including 7,000, 9,000, 12,000, 15,000, 18,000, and 24,000 BTU/h. Numerous combinations are possible depending on the outdoor unit selected.
However, this does not mean that we choose three heads, add their BTUs together, and automatically order the outdoor unit corresponding to that total.
The manufacturer indicates that, in certain approved configurations, a multizone outdoor unit can support a connected capacity of up to 130%. It also explicitly states that a combination exceeding 100% connected capacity does not increase the outdoor system’s actual production capacity.
This nuance has very practical consequences.
If multiple zones require their maximum capacity at exactly the same time, the outdoor unit must distribute the available power. That is why we need to consider the behavior of the entire residence rather than selecting each indoor unit independently.
What we analyze before determining each zone’s capacity
For an installation like the one in Saint-Pie, square footage matters, but it is not enough.
We also examine:
- the number of walls facing outdoors;
- the number and orientation of windows;
- exposure to sunlight;
- ceiling height;
- the level of insulation;
- the room’s position within the house;
- openings to adjoining rooms;
- the number of occupants and how the space is used;
- heating requirements during the winter;
- the outdoor unit’s capacity to supply all three zones together.
A modest-sized bedroom with two exterior walls and a large window may have different requirements from a similarly sized room located in the center of the building.
That is precisely why Fujitsu states in its documentation that its approved combination tables are not, on their own, a capacity-selection tool and recommends using its Design Simulator to design AIRSTAGE H Series systems.
Multizone comfort depends as much on the installation as on the equipment
Three independent temperatures, with one important distinction
Each indoor unit in a Fujitsu multizone system can be controlled independently.
In the Saint-Pie home, this means that occupants can adjust the setpoint for each zone according to their habits.
A bedroom can be kept cooler at night while the main living area remains at a different temperature. A less frequently used zone may also require less heating or air conditioning.
However, it is important to understand how a multizone system generally works: Fujitsu states that the system provides heating and cooling, but not simultaneously in different zones.
The three units can therefore have separate setpoints, but they remain connected to a single refrigeration system and must operate in a compatible mode.
This information is important when choosing between a triple-zone heat pump and several independent single-split heat pumps.
Inverter technology is particularly well suited to variable demands
Fujitsu documentation indicates that Aquila systems use an inverter-driven compressor, meaning Inverter technology.
Its value becomes clear in a multi-zone system.
The three rooms almost never require their maximum capacity at the same time. One zone may reach its setpoint while another still needs heating. A very sunny room may require less heating in the middle of the day than early in the morning.
Rather than relying solely on abrupt on-off operation, an Inverter compressor can adjust its operation more closely to the system’s demand.
For the homeowner, the goal is practical: a more stable temperature, fewer unnecessary fluctuations, and operation better suited to the changing needs of different zones.
Cold-weather heating must be part of the selection process
In Saint-Pie, as throughout southern Quebec, a heat pump must be evaluated for its winter capabilities, not solely for air conditioning in July.
The documentation provided by Fujitsu for Aquila and Aquila CTEB systems describes cold-climate heating solutions capable of operating down to -26 °C, with the CTEB units specifically presented as capable of heating operation down to this temperature.
This information is important, but we always avoid reducing winter performance to a single minimum temperature.
Three values must be distinguished:
The minimum operating temperature
It indicates the stated operating limit for a given configuration.
The capacity actually available at low temperatures
The amount of heat produced varies with the outdoor temperature and depends on the exact model.
The home’s heat losses
The colder it is outside, the more heat the house loses.
A good heat pump installation in Saint-Pie must therefore be sized by comparing the available capacity with the building’s actual needs.
An attractive installation can also be technically advantageous
In the photo of this project, no long conduit run crosses the wall around the indoor unit.
This detail obviously improves the appearance, but it can also indicate more direct planning of the piping route.
The fewer architectural elements that need to be worked around, the cleaner the installation can remain. This does not mean that a visible route is technically wrong: some building configurations make conduit unavoidable. The goal is instead to find the best realistic route for each property.
At AirGreen, we determine the location of the units while considering all of the following simultaneously:
air distribution, the building structure, drainage, service access, refrigerant lines, and the final appearance.
We do not choose the location solely because it is the quickest to reach from outside.
Future maintenance begins on the day of installation
The unit shown in the photograph has clear space in front of it, which is important both for its operation and for its maintenance.
A wall-mounted unit must remain accessible to allow, among other things:
- removing and cleaning the filters;
- inspecting the evaporator;
- checking the drain pan and drain;
- thorough cleaning when necessary;
- access to internal components for diagnostics.
Placing a unit directly above a very tall cabinet or in a virtually inaccessible location can unnecessarily complicate future service work.
We therefore address this issue during the design of every HVAC installation.
The mistakes we aim to avoid on a triple-zone project
The more zones an installation has, the more important coordination becomes.
The problems we want to avoid include:
- an indoor unit that is too large for a small room;
- a unit that is too small for an open-plan area;
- airflow paths directly blocked by furniture;
- drains with inadequate slope;
- unnecessarily complex piping routes;
- an improper match between indoor and outdoor capacities;
- units that are difficult to service;
- an outdoor unit installed in an area where snow or obstacles limit airflow.
A high-end system cannot automatically compensate for poor design.
That’s why our work as installers is not limited to installing the Fujitsu Aquila XLTH: we must make the entire system operate as a cohesive whole.
One outdoor unit for three spaces: a tangible benefit
For many homeowners, one of the most visible benefits of a triple-zone heat pump is the reduced number of outdoor units.
Three single-zone systems would normally have three outdoor units. A multi-zone configuration makes it possible to connect several zones to a single compatible outdoor unit.
This can make it easier to integrate the system around a home while preserving more open space for a patio, walkway, or landscaping.
However, this solution is not always preferable. For some projects in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore, and the South Shore, several independent single-zone systems may better meet the needs. In others, a central heat pump may be the more logical solution.
Our goal is to choose the configuration based on the building rather than forcing the same type of equipment into every home.

Looking at this Fujitsu wall-mounted unit, neatly installed above an unobstructed wall, the result seems simple. That is precisely what we strive for.
Behind this apparent simplicity, however, are several decisions: choosing the location, determining the zone capacity, combining it with two other indoor units, routing the lines, draining condensation, making the connections, commissioning the system, and verifying its overall operation.
The Fujitsu AIRSTAGE Aquila XLTH triple-zone heat pump offers an especially flexible design for homes where several spaces need to be controlled separately. However, the real value of this solution becomes apparent when the installation reflects the home’s thermal dynamics.
