Installation of a Fujitsu Aquila XLTH triple-zone heat pump in Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, Montérégie

Three comfort zones with discreet, thoughtfully designed interior integration

At Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, we completed an installation of a Fujitsu Aquila XLTH triple-zone heat pump designed to provide better comfort control in several areas of the home while maintaining a clean, unobtrusive interior integration.

The photo of this installation shows one of the Fujitsu wall-mounted units installed very close to the ceiling, in a corner of the room near a patio door. This type of placement requires particular care. The available height must be used to promote air distribution, avoid unnecessarily encroaching on the living space and, at the same time, maintain the clearances required around the unit for proper air intake and future maintenance.

In this room, the indoor unit blends discreetly into a neutral-toned décor. The nearby patio door is also an important detail: glass surfaces strongly influence a room’s thermal load, both in summer and winter. The choice of evaporator placement is therefore never purely aesthetic.

This installation is part of a Fujitsu AIRSTAGE multi-zone system, in which a single outdoor unit serves three indoor units. For the homeowners, this means greater room-by-room control without installing multiple condensers around the house.

Why a triple-zone heat pump was the right choice for this home

A home can easily have very different heating and cooling needs from one room to another.

A room with a large patio door can experience greater solar heat gain in the summer and greater heat loss in the winter. An upstairs bedroom may warm up more quickly than a room on the ground floor. A basement, by contrast, often maintains a more stable temperature.

In this type of setting, a triple-zone heat pump distributes comfort much more precisely than a single wall-mounted unit installed in a central area.

The Fujitsu documentation for the AIRSTAGE H Aquila series presents outdoor units rated at 18,000, 24,000, 36,000 and 45,000 BTU/h, capable, depending on the model, of powering up to two, three, four or five indoor units. For a three-zone application, several combinations are therefore possible depending on the building’s heating and cooling loads.

The Fujitsu indoor unit was positioned high on the wall, near the corner.

This configuration offers several advantages.

First, the height generally facilitates air distribution throughout the room. The conditioned air can be projected farther without being immediately blocked by furniture.

In addition, a high installation preserves usable wall space and limits the equipment’s visual impact.

In this project, we also had to consider the proximity of the patio door. A glass door can become a significant source of heat in summer, particularly during sunny periods, and a source of heat loss in winter.

Properly positioning the unit helps distribute the air more evenly throughout the space without creating an unpleasant draft directly on the occupants.

One detail we always monitor: the space above the unit

On a wall-mounted unit, return air is generally drawn in through the upper part of the unit. It is therefore important not to place the unit so close to the ceiling that this intake is restricted.

In an installation like this, we must find the right balance between a high position and the clearances required for the evaporator to function properly.

We must also think about future HVAC maintenance. The filters must remain accessible, and the technician must be able to open the unit to perform an inspection or cleaning.

An installation can look very attractive on the first day, but if it makes maintenance nearly impossible, it is not truly well designed.

Three indoor units do not necessarily have to have the same capacity

One of the major advantages of Fujitsu multi-zone systems is the ability to combine indoor units with different capacities.

Fujitsu documentation presents, for three-zone configurations, various possible combinations such as:

  • 7 + 7 + 7;
  • 7 + 7 + 9;
  • 7 + 7 + 12;
  • 7 + 9 + 9;
  • 7 + 9 + 12;
  • 9 + 9 + 12.

The values correspond to the nominal capacity classes of the indoor units, in thousands of BTU/h.

This flexibility is essential because three rooms almost never have the same heating and cooling load.

A large open-concept area with windows and a patio door may require more capacity than a small bedroom. The system can therefore be designed according to the actual needs of each zone rather than using three identical units chosen for simplicity.

Fujitsu systems support several types of indoor units

The AIRSTAGE Aquila platform is not limited to wall-mounted units.

Fujitsu also allows the use of:

  • Slim Duct;
  • compact cassettes;
  • Mid Static Duct units;
  • wall-mounted units.

This variety makes it possible to adapt the installation to the home’s architectural characteristics.

In a room where aesthetics are a priority and ceiling space is available, a ducted unit may sometimes be preferable. In another room, a wall-mounted unit remains simpler and more efficient to install.

The idea is therefore not to repeat exactly the same configuration in every zone, but to design a coherent system.

Up to 130% connection capacity: what this really means

Fujitsu documentation indicates that a multizone outdoor unit may allow a connection capacity of up to 130%, depending on the selected combination.

This point requires an important explanation.

If the combined nominal capacity of the indoor units exceeds the outdoor unit’s nominal capacity, this does not mean that the condenser will provide more than its maximum capacity.

Fujitsu specifies that exceeding 100% in combination does not increase the system’s production capacity.

This flexibility is useful when the different zones do not reach their peak demand at the same time.

In a house, for example, a bedroom may be used very little during the day while the main living area works harder. In the evening, the situation may be reversed.

Each zone can be controlled independently

Fujitsu specifies that each indoor unit can be controlled independently with its own remote control.

For occupants, this is one of the main advantages of a multizone heat pump.

It becomes possible to have a different setting in several rooms without making the whole house operate in exactly the same way.

A bedroom can be set cooler at night, while a common area can maintain a different temperature. A rarely used room can also be kept at a more economical setpoint.

Heating and air conditioning do not operate simultaneously, however

Even though the zones have individual controls, they share the same outdoor unit.

Fujitsu documentation indicates that the system provides heating and cooling, but not simultaneously in opposite modes.

This means that one indoor unit cannot heat while another cools at the same time.

For a residence, this limitation generally causes few problems because needs usually follow the season. Nevertheless, it must be understood before choosing a multizone system.

The Inverter compressor enables better modulation

Fujitsu AIRSTAGE systems use an inverter-driven compressor.

The documentation states that this technology improves comfort and energy efficiency by adapting compressor operation to demand.

In a three-zone system, this modulation is particularly useful.

When all three indoor units are working hard, the outdoor unit can increase its output. When demand decreases, the compressor can slow down.

This operation generally helps avoid excessively frequent on-off cycles and maintain more stable temperatures.

Cold-climate performance is essential for Sainte-Marie-Madeleine

The Fujitsu range presented in the documentation includes CTEB models, designed to operate in heating mode down to approximately -26 °C (-15 °F) and in cooling mode up to 50 °C (122 °F).

In a region like Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, this feature is particularly relevant.

Winter heating accounts for a significant portion of a heat pump’s annual use.

However, we must always distinguish between the minimum operating temperature and the capacity actually available at low temperatures.

A heat pump can continue operating at -25 °C without necessarily delivering its full rated capacity.

Sizing must therefore take the building’s actual needs during cold periods into account.

Why we do not provide a single SEER2 or HSPF2 value without knowing the exact combination

In a multi-zone system, efficiency ratings can change depending on the exact combination of the outdoor unit and indoor units.

The Fujitsu document provided for this installation mainly presents the available combination options and the platform's general characteristics. It does not provide a single SEER2 or HSPF2 value, nor an AHRI number that would allow a specific performance to be automatically assigned to the system shown in the photo.

The same applies to rebates.

Eligibility must be verified based on the exact combination installed and the program criteria in effect at the time of the project.

We therefore prefer to validate the actual data rather than attribute generic performance to an entire product range.

The patio door visible in the photo directly affects comfort

The presence of a large glazed area near the indoor unit is particularly significant in this project.

A patio door can affect a room's behavior in several ways.

In summer, it can transmit a significant amount of solar heat.

In winter, it can create a cold-wall effect and increase heat loss.

In this type of room, the choice of indoor unit capacity and its orientation is therefore particularly important.

We must avoid a situation where the unit is undersized and runs almost continuously on very hot days, or, conversely, where an oversized unit quickly reaches the setpoint without properly equalizing the temperature.

A proper installation must also manage drainage correctly

Every indoor unit used for air conditioning produces condensation.

This water must be discharged reliably.

In a wall-mounted installation, we must plan the drainage while considering the slope, the piping route, and the outlet location.

An incorrect slope or improperly configured drain can cause drainage problems, noise, or, in some cases, water leaks indoors.

In a triple-zone system, it is not a matter of managing a single drain, but three evaporators that must all operate properly.

Combination tables do not replace a load calculation

Fujitsu clearly states in its documentation that combination tables should not be used directly to select system capacity. The manufacturer recommends its Design Simulator software for selecting equipment for the AIRSTAGE H Series.

This clarification is essential.

A combination approved by Fujitsu means that it is technically compatible.

That does not mean it is suitable for every home.

To design an installation in Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, we must consider several factors:

  • room areas;
  • ceiling height;
  • solar orientation;
  • windows and glass doors;
  • insulation;
  • number of floors;
  • wind exposure;
  • occupancy habits;
  • internal loads.

This analysis determines the proper distribution of capacity among the three zones.

A successful indoor installation should fade into the background

The wall-mounted unit visible in the photo blends discreetly into the décor.

It is positioned high up, in a space that is not used for storage or furniture, and its white finish blends with the ceiling and mouldings.

For us, this aspect matters.

An HVAC installation must perform well, but it must also respect the living space.

A unit installed in the wrong location can become visually intrusive, blow air directly onto occupants, or complicate the room’s layout.

The choice of location is therefore an integral part of the project.

The system is not limited to three indoor units connected to one outdoor unit. Each zone must be considered individually and then integrated into an overall design.

In the photographed room, the challenge was specifically to position the unit near the ceiling and patio door in a way that promotes air circulation, preserves the aesthetic, and maintains the accessibility required for servicing.

It is this attention to detail that makes it possible to transform simple heating and air-conditioning equipment into a true home comfort solution.
