In Beloeil, a triple-zone heat pump integrated where every inch of wall space had to be used intelligently
On this installation carried out in Beloeil, one of the most interesting details is not hidden behind an electrical panel or in a technical data sheet: it is directly visible in the project photo. One of the indoor units of the MIDEA 28 triple-zone heat pump was installed immediately above a door opening, in a section of wall where the available space between the frame and the ceiling was limited.
This type of location requires more precision than a large, completely unobstructed wall. We must successfully integrate the wall-mounted air conditioner without obstructing the opening, maintaining a clean-looking installation, planning for the passage of the lines, and ensuring that the air outlet can actually serve the room.
In the photo taken after our work, the Midea unit is perfectly centered in the available area. The technical conduit enters discreetly from the right side. The air outlet louvers are open and the front display is lit, with the value “60” visible in the center of the unit. For us, this image aptly sums up a reality we regularly encounter in Beloeil, Longueuil, and elsewhere on the South Shore : a good HVAC installation must adapt to the building, not the other way around.
Why install a wall-mounted unit above an opening?
In some homes and apartments, the usable walls are already occupied by windows, cabinets, furniture, artwork, televisions, or openings between rooms. The space above a door then becomes particularly interesting.
But we do not choose this location simply because it is available.
We assess, among other things:
- the available height between the unit and the ceiling;
- the possibility of accessing the filters for HVAC maintenance;
- the path of the air blown into the room;
- the presence of studs, pipes, or electrical components in the wall;
- the possible route for the refrigerant lines and communication cable;
- how the condensate drain can be routed;
- the proximity of corners and other obstacles that could disrupt airflow.
In this installation of heat pump in Beloeil, the wall-mounted unit occupies an area that would otherwise have been underused. It remains elevated, frees up the main walls, and directs air toward the living space rather than toward a piece of furniture immediately in front of the unit.
A clean installation also requires considering the route of the lines
In a single-zone system, one pair of refrigerant lines generally connects the indoor unit to the outdoor condenser. With a three-zone heat pump, we must repeat this logic for three indoor units.
Coordination therefore becomes much more important.
For each zone, plan for:
- the refrigerant lines;
- the wiring required between the equipment;
- condensate drainage;
- the exterior or interior route of the line-hide covers;
- future access to the connections.
In the Beloeil photo, we can see a white side finish to the right of the unit. Choosing a compact route around the unit helps avoid an installation where the pipes become the dominant element on the wall.

MIDEA 28: understanding what “three-zone” really means
A multi-zone heat pump uses a single outdoor unit to power multiple indoor units. In a three-zone configuration, three spaces can therefore be served by a single condenser.
Midea technical documentation explains that each indoor unit in a multi-zone system can be controlled individually and set to the desired temperature.
This is particularly useful when the three zones are not occupied in the same way.
A bedroom may require less heating during the day. A living area may be used more heavily in the evening. An office may require a stable temperature during working hours. Instead of treating these three spaces as one large thermal zone, we can adapt operation to their actual use.
Midea documentation also emphasizes that independent control makes it possible to heat or cool primarily the rooms being used, rather than imposing the same demand on the entire house.
An important point: “MIDEA 28” does not automatically mean 28,000 BTU
This is a confusion we want to avoid when speaking with a homeowner.
The commercial name MIDEA 28 identifies a range of systems. The exact capacity must be determined based on the condenser model and the combination of indoor units.
For the configuration Extreme Heat three-zone documented by Midea with three 6,000 BTU/h All Easy Pro units, the condenser is identified as MO3HX-H18B-2A, with the reference AHRI 215471457.
For this reference combination, the manufacturer's table indicates, among other things:
- power supply: 208/230 V, single-phase, 60 Hz;
- cooling capacity: 19,000 BTU/h;
- heating capacity: 20,000 BTU/h;
- SEER2: 25;
- EER2: 15;
- listed heating performance rating: 10,4;
- maximum listed outdoor airflow: 2,131 CFM;
- maximum listed outdoor sound level: 62 dB(A);
- condenser dimensions: approximately 37 1/4 in × 16 1/8 in × 31 7/8 in.
However, the interior photo provided for this project does not clearly show the model number of the installed head. We therefore prefer not to arbitrarily assign a capacity of 6,000, 9,000, or 12,000 BTU/h to this specific unit.
This is exactly the method we recommend to homeowners: check the actual model numbers rather than assume capacity based on the unit's physical size.
Three heat pump heads should not automatically be sized identically
Another common mistake is to think: three rooms, therefore three units with the same capacity.
In practice, we need to analyze each zone.
Floor area is not enough
Floor area is a starting point, but it does not explain the entire heating and cooling load. A 150-square-foot room with a large, sun-facing window can behave very differently from a room of the same size on the other side of the building.
We examine, among other factors:
- room dimensions;
- ceiling height;
- windows;
- solar exposure;
- insulation;
- air infiltration;
- walls facing outdoors;
- the natural circulation of air toward adjacent rooms.
The positioning of the head also affects the result
The photo of this installation from MIDEA 28 in Beloeil is a good example. Since the unit is located above an opening, its airflow can be projected into the room without a tall piece of furniture placed directly in front of it blocking the distribution.
This kind of detail can make a noticeable difference in everyday comfort.
A range designed for different indoor configurations
The Midea multi-zone system is not limited to wall-mounted units. The manufacturer documents several categories of indoor units, including wall-mounted units, consoles, cassettes, and various ducted units.
For a residential project, this gives us greater flexibility.
A room can be served by a wall-mounted head. Another part of the building could, when the layout allows, use a ducted unit. The choice should not be dictated solely by what is quickest to install, but by how each space needs to be heated and cooled.
Inverter technology and the benefits of a partial-load system
In a triple-zone installation, the three rooms do not necessarily require their full capacity simultaneously.
The technology Inverter allows the Midea system to adjust the operation of the compressor and fan motors as demand varies. The manufacturer specifies that the system can operate at partial load when all rooms do not require the same level of air conditioning or when ambient conditions change.
For the owner, the benefit is therefore not simply having “three machines.”
The benefit is having a system capable of modulating its output according to the actual heating demand of the different zones.
This modulation also helps prevent excessively cyclical operation of equipment that is constantly forced to switch from off to full power.

Adding up the BTUs of the indoor units can give a false impression
Multi-zone systems follow combination rules defined by the manufacturer. Midea also publishes complete tables indicating which indoor-unit capacities can be paired with the different condensers.
One particularly important point appears in these instructions: when the total capacity of the indoor units exceeds the nominal capacity of the condenser, the capacity actually supplied to each unit may be reduced, and this effect becomes particularly noticeable in heating mode.
In other words, installing three heads, each with a given nominal capacity, does not mean that the full sum of those three capacities will always be available simultaneously.
That is why we look at the complete combination rather than each unit in isolation.
SynchroConnect: a useful technical feature for a multi-zone project
Three indoor circuits also mean more opportunities for error when matching wiring and refrigerant lines.
Midea integrates a technology called into its multi-zone platform SynchroConnect. According to the manufacturer, the system can check the connection status and synchronize the correspondence between the refrigerant lines and electrical connections in certain connection situations.
This absolutely does not replace good installation practices.
We must always:
- make the connections correctly;
- perform the vacuum procedure;
- confirm the system is leak-tight;
- comply with the permitted lengths;
- check the condensate drains;
- test each indoor unit;
- confirm that each controller operates the correct zone.
But on a three-zone system, an additional diagnostic function can facilitate commissioning and troubleshooting.
Can a MIDEA 28 heat pump be eligible for LogisVert?
The answer must always be based on the exact combination installed, and not solely on the Midea name displayed on the front.
The manufacturer’s documentation contains separate combination tables ENERGY STAR, and the three-zone Extreme Heat configuration with three 6,000 BTU/h All Easy Pro units is associated with AHRI reference 215471457.
On Hydro-Québec’s side, heat pumps installed since November 26, 2025, must be certified ENERGY STAR to be eligible for the LogisVert program. For systems meeting all the conditions, the current assistance is calculated at $50 per 1,000 BTU/h at -8 °C for an ENERGY STAR heat pump, or $120 per 1,000 BTU/h at -8 °C when it is certified for cold climates.
The amount is therefore not calculated simply from the number “18,000,” “24,000,” or “28” commercially associated with the system. Hydro-Québec uses the characteristics of the eligible combination and the recognized capacity at -8 °C.
For a project like Beloeil, so we always recommend confirming before submitting the application:
- the exact condenser model;
- each indoor unit model;
- the AHRI combination;
- the applicable ENERGY STAR certification;
- the installation date;
- the current program requirements.
This check prevents one of the most costly mistakes when purchasing an heat pump eligible for a subsidy : choosing a recognized brand or series, but using a combination that does not match the eligible pairing.
What the Beloeil photo shows about the installation finish
We pay particular attention to this image because it shows an aspect that SEER2 tables cannot quantify: the integration of the equipment into the room.
The unit is positioned:
- very high on the wall;
- directly above the opening;
- with clean horizontal alignment;
- without exposed piping across the entire width;
- with a compact side outlet on the right.
This type of installation requires precise measurements before drilling. A shift of a few centimeters can create an unbalanced appearance when a unit is installed directly above a door frame.
We must also consider opening the front panel. The filters of a wall-mounted heat pump must be removable and cleanable. Installing the head too close to an obstacle can therefore complicate maintenance in the following years.
The mistakes we aim to avoid with a triple-zone heat pump
Choosing the location solely to hide the lines
A short pipe run is beneficial, but not at the expense of poor air distribution.
Installing three units with the same capacity without calculating each zone
Three different rooms rarely have three identical heating loads.
Oversizing “to be sure”
A higher rated capacity does not automatically mean better comfort. Sizing must take the building and the equipment’s actual characteristics into account.
Forgetting drainage
A wall-mounted unit produces water in cooling mode. An inadequate slope, a pinched drain, or poorly planned routing can eventually lead to water leaking indoors.
Neglecting accessibility
An installation must be designed for today, but also for the next cleaning, the next diagnostic, and the years of use ahead.
Promising a rebate before verifying the match
We would rather verify an AHRI reference and the program criteria than advertise an amount based solely on a brand.
