Generic diagram: wall-mounted heat pump, indoor and outdoor units

In summer, the outdoor unit rejects the house's heat outside.

Generic illustration of this type of installation, not a survey of this job site. Tap a number.

  1. Mounted level on a wall plate, high enough for the air to reach the whole room, with enough space around it to slide the filters out easily.

  2. The refrigerant lines, the communication cable and the drain go through the wall in a single opening, sealed against water, cold air and insects.

  3. Two insulated copper pipes connect the two units. Outside, a line cover can protect them from sun, knocks and weather.

  4. A shut-off switch near the outdoor unit isolates it safely for service. It must stay accessible at all times.

  5. The compressor and the fan. In heating mode it captures heat from the outdoor air, even in winter, and moves it inside.

  6. On the ground or on the wall, it keeps the unit above accumulated snow. The unit stays clear and defrost water can drain away.

  7. The fan needs to blow freely. Storage, a fence or a wall too close, and efficiency drops while noise goes up.

A perfectly integrated interior head under a suspended ceiling for stable comfort without parasitic noise

Real context and objectives

At AirGreen , we were asked to improve the comfort of an open-plan home located in Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension . The main space serves as both a living room and a home office; the owner wanted a discreet, modulating and reliable solution all year round. We recommended a Zephyr wall-mounted heat pump , installed high up, just below a suspended ceiling . This configuration maximizes air diffusion, reduces the risk of recirculation near the ceiling and preserves peaceful acoustics, essential in a work environment.

Why a Zephyr wall head for this project?

  • Inverter modulation : the machine continuously adapts its capacity, limiting temperature variations and reducing electricity consumption in mid-season.

  • Even diffusion : the motorized shutter and internal deflectors direct the air along the ceiling and then into the living area, avoiding the sensation of drafts.

  • Discreet display on the front: practical for checking the instructions without a remote control nearby, while remaining visually discreet.

  • Sophisticated acoustics : very low noise level, particularly suitable for urban housing and home offices.

Implementation study: constraints and decisions

The space presents characteristic signs of a redeveloped floor or a finished basement: clean solid wall , suspended ceiling in mineral slabs, longitudinal circulation. We choose a centered installation on the load-bearing wall for:

  • provide a cross-flow of air that also covers the office area;

  • reduce the “short-circuit” effect between blowing and recovery;

  • maintain unobstructed access to the crankcase for HVAC maintenance .

The side, top and front clearances are respected to guarantee heat exchange and facilitate maintenance. The installation height limits the risk of soiling the facade and optimizes the drain draft.

Refrigeration path, drain and supply

The lineset route is configured back-to-back : the refrigeration connections pass directly through the wall behind the interior head to the exterior, which:

  • reduces the overall length (better capacity and less pressure losses);

  • limits fluid circulation noise ;

  • makes leak detection, insulation and future maintenance easier.

The condensate drain is gravity-fed : the outlet is at the rear of the unit with a continuous slope towards the outside. We ensure:

  • drill the wall with a slight negative inclination to prevent any water from returning;

  • insulate the exposed section to limit the risk of frost and droplets;

  • ensure drain ventilation to prevent gurgling.

The power supply is drawn from the main panel on a dedicated circuit, protected by a circuit breaker calibrated according to the nameplate. The infrared control is tested and, on request, we activate the Wi-Fi option (if present on the supplied version) for remote control.

Installation quality: what we do differently

  • Drilling templates and molly anchors/metal plugs adapted to the type of partition to avoid vibrations.

  • Seal around the wall penetration to block air and dust ingress; clean interior finish with no visible cap.

  • Bending radii respected on copper tubes to preserve the integrity of the circuit.

  • Continuous insulation of suction and liquid connections, with anti-UV tape on the outer sections.

Instrumented commissioning

Our HVAC installation protocol includes:

  1. Pressure-controlled nitrogen test to validate the tightness of each connection.

  2. Deep vacuum (< 500 microns) until stabilization, guaranteeing the absence of humidity and non-condensables.

  3. Opening of valves and control of supply/return temperatures at several ventilation speeds.

  4. Manifold readings and clamp thermometry to check thermal drift and superheat/subcooling within manufacturer tolerances.

  5. Acoustic and vibration control : listening near the suspended ceiling to eliminate any parasitic contact with the tiles.

A commissioning report (photos, serial numbers, readings) is given to the customer.

Results observed at the client

  • Stable comfort in the living area and office corner; modulation prevents variations in perceived temperature.

  • Lower consumption compared to basic electric heating; the greatest gains appear in spring and autumn.

  • Quiet operation : no parasitic noise transmitted to the suspended ceiling thanks to good vibration decoupling.

  • Aesthetics : clean white facade with no visible projections or chutes inside.

Good practices and pitfalls to avoid

  • Avoid installation too close to the ceiling : insufficient free space reduces air intake and can cause partial frosting in cooling mode.

  • Take care of the drain slope : an invisible counter-slope behind the wall leads to overflows and odors.

  • Limit line length : a short back-to-back maintains rated capacity, especially in heating mode in cold weather.

  • Respect the bending radius : a bend that is too tight tires the copper and increases losses.

  • Maintain maintenance access : clear the underside of the unit to easily remove the housing, filters and turbine.

Maintenance and sustainability

Annual HVAC maintenance maintains seasonal performance:

  • disassembly of the casing and cleaning of the internal exchanger;

  • washing/suction of the turbine and condensate trays;

  • control of intensities , electrical connections and probes;

  • checking the visual tightness of the circuit and the condition of the insulation;

  • drainage test with water load.

Between visits, the client can rinse the filters every 2 to 3 months, especially during pollen season or if the space is used as an office with computer equipment.

Yields, operating costs and financial assistance

Properly sized wall-mounted heat pumps provide a high COP in mid-season and remain efficient during the cold weather typical of Greater Montreal. In Montreal , Laval , Longueuil , on the North Shore and the South Shore , these devices are generally eligible for energy efficiency assistance programs when their performance meets the required thresholds. We assist our clients in preparing the file (detailed invoice, certificates, HVAC installation photos).

Questions owners often ask us

Where to place the inner head?
Ideally, place it on a clear wall facing the living area. Here, the central installation ensures even diffusion while avoiding direct blowing onto the workstations.

Is the suspended ceiling a problem?
No, if we respect the upper clearances and the fixing plate is correctly detached ; we check that no vibration comes into contact with the slabs.

Gravity or condensate pump?
Gravity is preferred for reliability and silence; the geometry of the wall here allows it with a continuous slope.

Why entrust your project to AirGreen?

  • Proven experience in urban housing and multifunctional rooms;

  • Careful finishing and complete commissioning documentation;

  • Local service throughout Greater Montreal, with scheduled HVAC maintenance to preserve warranty and performance.

Conclusion

This Zephyr wall-mounted heat pump provides a precise response to the constraints of a Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension home: careful integration under a suspended ceiling, comfortable diffusion for teleworking, controlled consumption and easy maintenance. Our teams remain available to study similar configurations in Montreal , Laval , Longueuil , on the North Shore and the South Shore — from capacity selection to fine-tuning commissioning.

    Frequently asked questions

    What people ask us about this kind of work

    12 questions
    Does a wall-mounted heat pump heat in winter?
    Yes, it heats and cools. Its capacity drops in very cold weather; the operating range depends on the model and is listed on its spec sheet.
    Wall-mounted or multi-zone: how do I choose?
    One wall head and one condenser outside: the direct solution for a room or an open area. For two to five rooms, a multi-zone puts one head in each room on a single condenser.
    Where does the outdoor unit go?
    Where it stays above the snow, clear and accessible, away from walkways. We decide it with you during the estimate.
    Are there grants?
    Depending on the model and your situation, assistance programs may apply, including Hydro-Québec's LogisVert. AirGreen checks the model number before quoting an amount. See the grants.
    Do I need a permit?
    Rules vary from city to city: location, distances, noise. See permits and by-laws, and we check for your address.
    How cold can it heat?
    It depends on the model. According to Hydro-Québec, newer models work down to a temperature between −15 °C and −25 °C, and some cold-climate models are certified lower. The minimum temperature is on each unit's spec sheet.
    How much can I save?
    Hydro-Québec says a heat pump can be up to three times more efficient than baseboards for heating in the colder months. The result depends on the house, the climate and how it is used.
    How is the LogisVert assistance calculated?
    For ENERGY STAR cold-climate certified heat pumps, Hydro-Québec lists assistance of $120 per 1,000 BTU/h of heating capacity at −8 °C. AirGreen checks the exact model before quoting an amount; only Hydro-Québec confirms the assistance granted. See the grants.
    Is it noisy?
    The sound level depends on the model and is listed in decibels on each unit's spec sheet. Location matters too: when possible, we avoid putting the outdoor unit under a bedroom window.
    The outdoor unit is covered in ice: is that normal?
    Some frost is: the unit runs defrost cycles. Never hit the ice. If the unit stays iced up or stops heating, call us.
    Does AirGreen hold the required licences?
    Yes. AirGreen holds RBQ licence 5645-9605-01, subclasses 15.8 Ventilation, 15.10 Refrigeration and 16 Electricity.
    Is the estimate free?
