Installation of a GREE UNIX R32 central heat pump in Ange-Gardien, in the Rouville RCM

One metre from the pool, one metre from the lot line, and the neighbour’s unit directly opposite

The property had everything needed to complicate matters. A brick house in Ange-Gardien, in the Rouville RCM, a side yard barely two metres wide, an ornamental iron fence marking the lot line, an above-ground pool with its pump and filtration system installed along the wall, and—visible from the chosen location—the outdoor unit of a neighbour’s wall-mounted air conditioner on the opposite façade.

The owner had already received two quotes. Neither mentioned the pool.

We installed a GREE UNIX R32 central heat pump on supports anchored to the foundation. What follows focuses less on the installation itself—we have described it elsewhere—than on the three neighbours this appliance will have to coexist with for fifteen years: chlorinated water, the lot line, and someone else’s equipment.

Two features of the UNIX R32 series mattered more here than anywhere else.

Quiet design. An appliance rated at 61 dB(A) at maximum speed, in a two-metre side yard bordered by a fence, facing a neighbouring property, cannot afford to be noisy. The DC Inverter technology and two-stage, two-cylinder compressor allow the appliance to spend most of its operating hours well below this level, modulating between 18,000 and 38,000 BTU/h rather than starting and stopping.

The service valves and external electrical terminals. In a space where the unit cannot be worked around, being able to connect and inspect it without opening the casing is not a luxury. This reduces the time required at each HVAC maintenance visit throughout the system's service life.

The Pool: The Most Corrosive of the Three Environments

This was the constraint that the two competing bids had overlooked, and it is the one that will have the greatest effect on the unit's longevity.

What Chlorinated Air Does to a Coil

An outdoor-unit coil consists of copper tubes and aluminum fins. These two metals, in electrical contact, already form a galvanic couple. Add moisture and suspended chlorine compounds, and corrosion accelerates significantly.

The air above a treated pool carries volatile by-products—chloramines and related compounds. A fan that draws thousands of cubic metres of air per hour from one metre above this surface continuously pulls these compounds through the coil throughout the swimming season, which is also the entire air-conditioning season.

The result is not visible in the first year. It appears as fins that turn white, become pitted, then disintegrate, and as tubes that eventually begin to leak. A properly installed heat pump lasts fifteen years or more; the same poorly protected heat pump next to a pool can lose several years of useful life.

The four measures implemented in Ange-Gardien
  1. The greatest possible distance. The unit was installed at the point farthest from the water's surface that the yard allowed, while respecting the manufacturer's clearances and the property line.
  2. Directing the discharge away from the pool, so that air circulation does not create a permanent current between the water and the coil.
  3. Ground clearance through mounting on supports, which moves the coil away from the area where humid, laden air stagnates the most, just above the ground.
  4. An appropriate maintenance protocol, provided to the homeowner in writing and detailed below.
Splashes and maintenance products

Two seemingly harmless actions cause more damage than the ambient air:

  • Water sprayed directly onto the coil while swimming or handling a hose. A single splash of heavily chlorinated water on hot fins leaves a concentrated deposit.
  • Storing chemicals near the unit. A poorly sealed chlorine container stored under or beside an outdoor unit releases vapors that continuously attack the coil. This is a guideline we give systematically, and it costs nothing to follow.
The electrical question

A pool has its own equipotential bonding and grounding requirements, and these requirements extend to an area around the pool. An electrical device located in this area, along with its exposed metal parts and support, may need to be integrated into the bonding network.

We do not decide this question by eye. The unit's position relative to the pool, the routing of the existing bonding network, and the required connections are confirmed with the master electrician before installation. A non-compliance of this nature cannot be fixed afterward with tape.

Fall shutdown

Once removed and folded, a pool cover has to be stored somewhere. Too often, it is stored against the outdoor unit, if not on top of it.

A unit covered during winter cannot defrost. A central heat pump operates year-round: unlike an air conditioner, it must never be covered with a tarp. We explain this to the homeowner during commissioning, because the action comes from good intentions and causes exactly the opposite of what it is meant to achieve.

What chlorinated air really does to a coil, and how to slow it down

Rinsing: the most cost-effective maintenance measure

For an outdoor unit installed near a pool, periodically rinsing the coil with clean water is by far the most cost-effective maintenance procedure. It removes deposits before they have time to attack the metal.

The rules to follow:

  • Power off the unit at the disconnect before any work.
  • Moderate pressure. A pressure washer bends the fins irreversibly and causes more damage than the deposits it removes.
  • Rinsing from the inside outward when the configuration allows it, to flush out particles rather than drive them deeper.
  • Increased frequency compared with an ordinary installation: twice per season instead of once, plus an additional rinse when closing the pool.

This rinsing is in addition to the regular replacement of indoor filters, which remains the foundation of any central system.

Protective coatings

For installations near the sea, close to a pool, or in an industrial environment, protective coil treatments are available. Their suitability depends on the actual severity of exposure, the budget, and the type of unit.

We assess it on a case-by-case basis and present it for what it is: a measure that slows corrosion, not immunity. A poorly maintained treated coil will still deteriorate.

The lot line and the neighbor's unit

Two outdoor units on opposite sides of a narrow passage do not ignore each other.

Cross-recirculation

In cooling mode, each unit expels hot air. If the two outlets face each other in a two-meter corridor, each unit draws in some of the air expelled by the other. Both systems lose efficiency, and neither owner understands why their bill is higher than expected.

The orientation selected in Ange-Gardien avoids a direct alignment between the two units. It is a two-minute check on site, and it cannot be done from an office.

Municipal regulations

Before determining a location, we verify with the municipality:

  • The minimum distance from property lines, often specific to air-conditioning and heating equipment.
  • The permissible noise level, sometimes measured at the property line and sometimes subject to different time periods.
  • Screening or landscaping requirements applicable to visible mechanical equipment.

These rules differ from one municipality to another in Montérégie. An appliance that complies in Marieville may not comply elsewhere.

Neighbor relations

Beyond municipal regulations, the Civil Code of Québec provides in section 976 that neighbors must tolerate normal annoyances of the neighborhood, provided they do not exceed the limits of tolerance they owe one another according to the nature of the location and local customs.

In practical terms: a noisy unit placed under the neighbor's bedroom window can become a matter that goes far beyond the cost of choosing a good location. We do not offer legal advice, but we position units with this reality in mind, because relocating an outdoor unit afterward is expensive and rarely done cheerfully.

The nearby wall outlet

An exhaust outlet was located on the same wall, a short distance away. The hot, humid air it discharged froze on a coil in winter and increased the number of defrost cycles. The unit's final position takes its airflow into account, and the applicable clearances were verified before the brackets were secured.

Central heat pump and pool heat pump: two appliances, two programs

This confusion comes up often, and it deserves to be clarified, especially on a project where both are present.

  • A central heat pump heats and cools the home's air. It is connected to the network of ducts, operates year-round, and is covered by financial assistance programs for space heating.
  • A pool heat pump heats the pool water. It operates during the swimming season and does not contribute to heating the building. Hydro-Québec's LogisVert program concerns space heating: it provides $50 per 1,000 BTU/h for an efficient heat pump, or $120 per 1,000 BTU/h for a cold-climate-rated unit, calculated based on the certified capacity at -8 °C of the installed AHRI combination, with a minimum cooling capacity of 12,000 BTU/h and ENERGY STAR certification mandatory since November 26, 2025. A pool heat pump does not fall within this framework.

A homeowner installing both in the same year must therefore submit a single application for the correct appliance, with the correct AHRI code. We validate the exact combination in Hydro-Québec's search tool before ordering, and the AHRI code appears on the invoice—without it, the application is rejected.

Seven mistakes specific to installations near a pool and along a property line

  1. Not mentioning the pool in the quote, as if it did not exist.
  2. Placing the coil directly in line with the water surface.
  3. Storing chemicals under or against the outdoor unit.
  4. Covering the unit for the winter, which prevents defrosting.
  5. Cleaning the coil with a pressure washer, permanently bending the fins.
  6. Directing the discharge toward the neighbor’s unit, which penalizes both systems.
  7. Failing to validate the bonding connection required for the pool area.
