Installation of a Fujitsu Orion XLTH+ wall-mounted heat pump in Saint-Cyprien-de-Napierville

A balcony slab, a concrete wall, and -30 °C to anticipate: the anatomy of an installation that leaves no room for approximation

There are projects where the outdoor unit is placed on a plastic base in the backyard, three feet from the electrical panel, and everything is finished before lunch. This was not one of them.

At AirGreen, we installed a 12,000 BTU Fujitsu Orion XLTH+ wall-mounted heat pump in an upstairs apartment, with an outdoor unit that had to rest on a concrete balcony slab, backed against a load-bearing wall, a few feet from a window and a barbecue. Each of these constraints affects how the unit is mounted, drained, insulated, and commissioned. Here is how we approached it, and what it should teach you if you are considering a similar HVAC installation in Saint-Cyprien-de-Napierville, in Montérégie, or elsewhere on the South Shore.

The project context

The client heated with electric baseboards and was mainly suffering through the summer: south-facing orientation, large windows, and no air conditioning. The initial request was simple—“I want air conditioning”—but our assessment quickly showed that the real benefit lay elsewhere. With a coefficient of performance of 4.88, the same unit would also substantially reduce heating bills from October to April, provided the selected model could genuinely withstand a cold climate.

Three structural constraints guided the choice:

  1. No wall available for a wall-mounted support. The cladding and masonry could not support anchoring a cantilevered bracket without risking the transmission of vibrations into the structure—and therefore to the neighbor below.
  2. A circulation space to preserve. The balcony also serves as a terrace, so it was impossible to occupy its entire depth.
  3. Defrost condensate. In winter heating mode, an outdoor unit discharges water. On an elevated slab, this water can become a sheet of ice, cause water damage to the neighbour below, or both.

Why choose Fujitsu's Orion XLTH+ series

The AIRSTAGE H series from Fujitsu comes in three single-zone capacities: 09KTAP1, 12KTAP1, and 15KTAP1. We selected the 12KTAP1 after performing a load calculation, rather than reflexively oversizing the system.

Heating certified down to -30 °C, with no cutoff device

This is the most misunderstood criterion in the Quebec market. Many wall-mounted heat pumps advertise “cold-climate” operation but shut down at -15 °C or -20 °C. The Orion XLTH+ has a heating operating range of -30 °C to 24 °C, with no imposed cutoff point.

More important than the temperature range itself is the remaining capacity at those temperatures. For the 12KTAP1, it reaches:

  • 156% of nominal capacity at -21 °C
  • 103% of nominal capacity at -30 °C

In other words, the unit still delivers more than 15,000 BTU/h of heat in the coldest part of a January night. That figure—not the number printed on the box—is what determines whether your baseboard heaters will switch on or remain off.

The R-32 refrigerant and what it means for installation

The Orion XLTH+ uses R-32, whose global warming potential is 675, compared with 2,088 for R-410A—a reduction of 68%. The required charge is also lower for the same performance.

However, R-32 is classified as A2L, which requires checks that too many installers overlook: the minimum room area where the indoor unit is located, based on the total circuit charge, and full compliance with the CSA B52 standard. On this project, the living room was well above the required threshold, but we perform this calculation systematically even before ordering the equipment. A wall-mounted air conditioner installed in a 60 sq. ft. room may be non-compliant.

The installation process, step by step

Ground mounting rather than wall mounting

We chose an extruded aluminum ground support with adjustable feet rather than a wall bracket. Three reasons:

  • Vibration isolation. The feet rest on anti-vibration pads, not directly on the bare slab. The Inverter compressor therefore does not transmit low-frequency vibrations into the concrete structure, which would otherwise act as a resonance chamber for the floor below.
  • Elevation. The unit is raised approximately 6 in. above the slab. In winter, it does not become trapped in a bed of ice formed by its own defrosting.
  • Reversibility. No anchors passing through the cladding or the balcony membrane. A point that resolves many discussions with a condominium association.

The unit was positioned with its long side against the wall, the discharge grille facing outward, with full front clearance. A heat pump that blows against a solid railing or a wall that is too close recirculates its own air: efficiency drops and the machine defrosts more often.

Wall-mounted installation

The penetration goes through a concrete wall. We used a core drill with the exact diameter, an insulated sleeve, a slight slope toward the outside, and flexible sealant at both ends. The connection is then protected by an insulated black cover, visible in the photo at the bottom of the unit.

Even a slope reversed by just a few millimeters sends water back into the wall. It is one of the most common defects we correct in installations carried out by others in Montreal, Laval, and Longueuil.

Outdoor condensate drainage

A drain elbow was installed beneath the base pan and connected to a flexible hose directed toward the balcony drain rather than left to discharge freely. This part costs a few dollars. Its absence costs an insurance claim.

Refrigerant lines, vacuuming, and commissioning
  • Cold-bending the 3/8 in. and 1/4 in. lines without crushing them, with continuous insulation on both pipes—including the liquid line, which is often neglected
  • Re-making the flares with an eccentric flaring tool, and tightening to torque-wrench specifications
  • Vacuuming down to a deep vacuum, with hold and rise testing: this is the step that determines the compressor's service life—and the one that gets shortened when someone wants to finish early
  • Dedicated circuit, outdoor disconnect, verified grounding
  • Checking the pressures, temperature split, and amperage draw, then configuring Wi-Fi AIRSTAGE and demonstrating it to the customer

Total time on site: one day.

Five mistakes we see constantly

  1. Oversizing. An oversized system short-cycles, dehumidifies poorly, and ages quickly. Load calculations are not a formality.
  2. Placing the outdoor unit against the wall or railing. The advertised performance assumes that proper clearance is maintained.
  3. Placing the outdoor unit directly on the slab. Ice, corrosion, and transmitted noise.
  4. Ignoring winter condensate. In heating mode, the outdoor unit produces water—not the other way around.
  5. Installing it too close to a barbecue. Airborne grease fouls the outdoor coil, and radiant heat throws off the sensor reading. We maintain a clear separation.

Maintenance: what the homeowner should do and what falls to us

  • Every 2 to 4 weeks during the season: rinse the indoor unit's washable filters
  • In spring: clear the outdoor grille of poplar fluff and dust
  • Once a year: deep cleaning of the indoor unit's coil and drain pan, and checking pressures, drainage, and electrical connections

A dirty indoor coil reduces airflow, increases energy consumption, and eventually causes odors. This is the first thing we inspect during a service call for “loss of performance.”

Eligibility for rebates

The Orion XLTH+ is ENERGY STAR certified (ES, ESCC, ESME), which is the entry requirement for most programs currently available in Quebec, notably Hydro-Québec's LogisVert and Rénoclimat. The actual amount depends on the heating system being replaced, the type of building, and occupancy status—the rates change from year to year. We verify eligibility before signing, and we provide the technical documentation required for the application. We never promise an amount that we have not verified in the file.

What this project says about how we work

A successful wall-mounted heat pump installation is not judged on the day it is installed. It is judged at -25 °C in February, and six summers later. The decisions that make the difference—the ground stand rather than a wall mount, the slope of the core-drilled opening, the drainage elbow, and the depth of the void—cost a few hundred dollars and a few extra hours. They separate a machine that lasts fifteen years from one that turns into a warranty case.
