BRAEBURN wireless sensors: the temperature read where you actually live

The 7390 measures a room far from the thermostat, the 7490 reads the outdoors from -40 to 49 °C for heat pump balance points. Both talk by radio to Braeburn wireless thermostats, including the 8500 BlueLink, up to 4 sensors per thermostat.

Where should your home read the temperature?

Tap a room to put a 7390 there, add the 7490 outside. The thermostat refuses a 5th sensor, as in Braeburn’s guide.

01The two sensors

One sensor for a room, one for outside

Neither has a screen: they send a temperature to the thermostat, which shows it and uses it. Figures from Braeburn’s installer guides (7390-100-03 and 7490-100-03) and Braeburn’s 2026 catalog.

02Compatibility

Does your Braeburn thermostat accept these sensors?

The number is printed on the thermostat or in its guide. Pick it: the answer comes from Braeburn’s documents, with their number.

03Balance points

What the thermostat does with the 7490’s reading

The sensor decides nothing. The thermostat compares its reading with two settings, off by default: the compressor balance point and the auxiliary heat balance point (8500 manual, settings 23 and 24).

Ranges from the 8500 installer manual (8500-100-02, ©2024): compressor 0 to 50 °F (-18 to 10 °C), for 2 or 3 stage heat pumps with a Braeburn outdoor sensor; auxiliary heat 70 to 40 °F (21 to 4 °C). The same settings exist on the 7500 (22 and 23) and the 7320 (23 and 24). The values chosen here are examples; the right setting depends on your system.

06Questions

The questions we get about Braeburn sensors

Showing 12 of 12 questions

What is the difference between the 7390 and the 7490?

The 7390 measures the temperature of a room, indoors. The 7490 measures the outdoor temperature, to show it on the thermostat or for heat pump balance points.

How many sensors can one thermostat take?

Four at most, and only one of them can be a 7490 outdoor sensor. For example: three 7390s and one 7490.

Which Braeburn thermostats do they work with?

Braeburn’s 2026 catalog names the 8500 BlueLink Wireless. The older 7500 and 7320 also take them, according to their guides.

Can my 8205 Wi-Fi thermostat use these sensors?

No. Braeburn’s 8205 product page says “Remote Sensors: No”.

Which batteries do they need?

Two AA alkaline batteries for the 7390, two AA lithium batteries only for the 7490. Braeburn supplies them with each sensor.

Does the 7490 handle a Québec winter?

Its guide gives an operating temperature of -40 to 49 °C. It goes out of direct sun, above the snow line.

What is a balance point?

It is an outdoor temperature set in the thermostat. Below the compressor point, the heat pump is locked out; above the auxiliary point, the auxiliary heat is locked out. Both are off by default.

Can the 7390 average with the thermostat?

Yes. According to Braeburn’s 2026 catalog, the thermostat can read the temperature at the sensor or average it with its own.

Does a wire have to go through the wall?

No. Both sensors run on batteries and talk to the thermostat by radio (915 MHz).

What is the warranty?

A Braeburn 5-year limited warranty when the sensor is installed by a professional contractor: 60 months from purchase by the professional or 66 months from manufacture. Batteries, removal and reinstallation are excluded. No registration is required.

Is there a grant for these sensors?

No. LogisVert, ENERGY STAR, the Énergir PE-204 list and Hilo do not cover these sensors (checked October 14, 2026).

How much does an installed sensor cost?

The price is on quotation. The in-home estimate is free.
