ecobee and a central heat pump: who heats when it’s −15 °C?

An ecobee thermostat decides, from the outdoor temperature, when your heat pump heats alone, when the backup heat helps and when it takes over. The models we install handle up to 2 heat-pump stages and 2 backup stages (Premium and Lite), on 24 V systems.

The settings ecobee gives your installer

These are the settings behind the simulator at the top of the page. The names come from ecobee’s wiring guide, in French and English; the values are set at installation, to suit your heat pump and backup.

Discrepancies found: Énergir’s list calls EB-STATE7* “Smart Thermostat Premium” (ENERGY STAR: Essential and Lite; Enbridge: Essential), and its PDFs mention a contract before installation while its web page says 30 days after purchase.

Frequently asked questions about ecobee

Can an ecobee run my electric baseboards?

No. ecobee is built for 24 V AC equipment and its guide rules out line voltage and millivolt systems. For baseboards or an electric floor, see our other thermostats.

Does it work with a central heat pump and electric backup?

Yes. The Premium and the Lite run 2 heat-pump stages and 2 backup stages; the Enhanced, 2 stages and 1 backup, per ecobee’s pro sheets.

What about a heat pump with a gas furnace (dual fuel)?

The Premium, Enhanced and Lite sheets list dual fuel. The split between heat pump and furnace is set with the settings in section 03.

I have no C wire. Is that a problem?

Often not: the PEK is included with the Premium and Enhanced, and sold separately for the Lite. Per the Lite wiring guide, it does not suit dual-transformer systems, fan coils or communicating systems.

How many SmartSensors can I add?

ecobee publishes no maximum on the pages read Oct. 20, 2026.

Does the Lite take SmartSensors?

ecobee contradicts itself: the sensor page lists the Lite, the comparison page calls for an occupancy-enabled thermostat. We check before ordering. The door and window sensor does not list the Lite.

Does ecobee work with Hydro-Québec’s Hilo?

No. Hilo names only Honeywell Home, Sinopé and Mysa among compatible thermostats.

Can I get a rebate on an ecobee?

Only with natural gas: up to $100 from Énergir (at most 75% of the cost) or a $100 credit from Enbridge Gaz Québec, applied for within 30 days of purchase. The Lite is not named on either list. Only the utility confirms the rebate.

Does LogisVert pay for the thermostat?

No. The LogisVert v1.10 residential guide (Sept. 15, 2026) has no measure for a thermostat like ecobee.

What is the warranty?

3-year limited on ecobee.ca; 5 years when a professional installs the device, per ecobee’s pro sheets. The full terms are not on the pages read.

Can an ecobee run a wall-mounted heat pump?

ecobee designs its thermostats for 24 V AC equipment. For a wall heat pump, we look at the unit during the estimate: compatibility is confirmed on quotation.

Does the Premium measure air quality?

Yes: it has an indoor air-quality monitor (VOC and eCO2), per its pro sheet. The Enhanced and the Lite do not.

How much does an installed ecobee cost?

Price on quotation: we first look at your wiring and your system. The estimate is free.

Who makes ecobee?

ecobee, founded in 2007 and based in Toronto, has been owned by Generac since December 1, 2021.
