WaterFurnace: the thermostat and zoning that speak Aurora

The CM-U04A thermostat and IntelliZone2 zoning only work with a WaterFurnace geothermal heat pump with Aurora controls. Check your system first, then see how IntelliZone2 shares heat between your zones.

The thermostat only operates with the Aurora system (WaterFurnace IG1602EW). Without Aurora, neither the CM-U04A nor the IntelliZone2 version sold here can control the unit.

01 · Compatibility

First things first: you need a WaterFurnace with Aurora controls

A few answers are enough. The tool says no when WaterFurnace says no, and “to be confirmed” when its documents don’t settle it.

  • 7 Series: listed by WaterFurnace as compatible.

02 · The two products

One thermostat for one zone, one system for six

The CM-U04A replaces the thermostat in a single-zone home. IntelliZone2 comes with its own main thermostat, the MainStat, and drives dampers in the ducts.

Each zone counts by its size and call level

IntelliZone2 adds up the zones’ demands into a single demand for the heat pump. Set your zones: the rules and thresholds come from WaterFurnace’s design guide.

  • No auxiliary heat: the W call needs 90% total demand.

6 airflow levels: 25, 40, 55, 70, 85 and 100%.

Zoning is decided in the ducts

IntelliZone2 also means motorized dampers, a transformer and duct rules. Here is what WaterFurnace requires.

Dampers

  • 3-wire: ZDRT3 (rectangular), ZDCT3 (round), powered open and close
  • 2-wire: ZDRT2, ZDCT2, powered close, spring open
  • Rectangular 8 to 30 in. × 8 to 14 in.; round 6 to 18 in.

Ducts

  • At most 3 dampers per zone, at least 3 branch runs per zone
  • No bypass damper
  • Inlet static pressure at the dampers: 1 in. W.C. at most

Wiring and network

  • 4 wires R, C, +, - to the thermostats, never swap + and -
  • Harness from the panel to the AXB P7-Zone port
  • Remote access: AWL router plugged into the ABC board

How many transformers for your dampers?

3 VA per 3-wire damper, 7 VA per 2-wire damper; one ZTK240 gives 75 VA (SCAC-0050W, IMAC-0050W).

1 ZTK240 transformer (75 VA) is enough.

Never power the dampers from the heat pump’s transformer (SCAC-0050W).

What AirGreen does with these rules. We hold RBQ licence 5645-9605-01 (subclasses 15.8 ventilation, 15.10 refrigeration and 16 electricity). Duct assessment, damper selection, price and installation are all confirmed in your quotation. Neither product involves the ground loop or any drilling.

05 · Warranty and grants

The warranty follows your system, and no grant covers these accessories

We read WaterFurnace’s documents and each program’s own site on October 20, 2026.

WaterFurnace limited warranty

The term depends on your system’s warranty certificate. WaterFurnace asks owners to register the unit to receive full benefits (warranty.waterfurnace.com).

WaterFurnace’s sample certificate (03/15) lists exclusions.

Who WaterFurnace is

WaterFurnace International was founded in 1983 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. It makes geothermal and water-source heat pumps, and has been part of Sweden’s NIBE group since 2014.

Its logo was refreshed in December 2025; the name did not change.

LogisVert

Covers the geothermal heat pumps themselves. Guide v1.10 (Sept. 15, 2026) has nothing for a thermostat or zoning.

No WaterFurnace thermostat on the certified smart thermostat list (checked Oct. 20, 2026).

06 · FAQ

The questions we get about WaterFurnace

Does the CM-U04A work with another brand of heat pump?

No. WaterFurnace states its communicating thermostats only operate with its Aurora control system (IG1602EW guide).

What is the difference between the CM-U04A and the CM-U03A?

The CM-U04A adds humidity control and 7 Series compatibility. The CM-U03A is not for variable-speed compressors. We sell the CM-U04A.

Does the CM-U04A have Wi-Fi?

No. Remote access goes through the Aurora WebLink (AWL) router, plugged into the unit’s board, and the Symphony platform.

How many zones can IntelliZone2 handle?

Up to 6 with a variable-speed compressor, 4 with dual capacity and 2 with single speed, per the SCAC-0050W design guide (03/26).

Is a bypass damper needed?

No. IntelliZone2 does not use one: the heat pump’s ECM blower varies the airflow to match the zones calling.

How many dampers per zone?

Three at most, installed close to the main trunk; each zone also needs at least three branch runs.

My unit has no AXB or AHB board. What now?

WaterFurnace then provides the IntelliZone2•24V version, which needs Aurora Base or Premier controls and handles up to 4 zones (dual capacity) or 2 (single speed). It is not in our store: price and availability on quotation.

Is there a grant for these products?

No. LogisVert covers geothermal heat pumps, not their thermostats or zoning; ENERGY STAR, Hilo and Énergir do not list them (checked October 20, 2026).

What warranty?

WaterFurnace’s limited warranty, per your system’s certificate. The sample certificate lists exclusions: the terms that apply to your purchase are confirmed with the quotation.

Does the MainStat control humidity?

Yes: humidification from 15 to 50% (automatic mode needs the outdoor sensor) and dehumidification from 35 to 65%, with active dehumidification on variable speed only (UGMS-0035W guide).

What do you need for a quotation?

A photo of the heat pump’s nameplate, one of the control panel and one of the current thermostat. For zoning, add the number of floors and a sketch of the rooms.

Who makes WaterFurnace?

WaterFurnace International, founded in 1983 in Fort Wayne (Indiana), part of the NIBE group since 2014.
