A 120 US gallon indirect water heater in ASME version for institutional and commercial buildings

In a seniors’ residence, an early childhood centre, a hotel or a commercial kitchen, hot water is an essential service and the tank that produces it is often subject to specific requirements from the engineer or the insurer. The Thermo 2000 DoubleMax 120-9A indirect water heater fits this context: a 120 US gallon tank, a 55.6 sq. ft. double-wall copper heat exchanger and a maximum pressure of 125 psi stated for the ASME version. It is fed by an electric boiler. AirGreen installs it in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the South Shore and on the North Shore.

Why choose the 120-9A version

On the DoubleMax 120-9A specification sheet, the maximum pressure is stated as 125 psi (ASME). The American Society of Mechanical Engineers code governs the design of pressure vessels; in many commercial and institutional projects, the engineer’s drawings or the insurer’s conditions require a tank of this type. Choosing the right version from the start avoids reordering and a site delay. We check this requirement with you before quoting.

Managing a 125 psi maximum pressure

The maximum working pressure of this model is 125 psi. In some areas, the municipal supply pressure or that of a booster pump can come close to it, especially on the lower floors of a building. We measure the pressure at the water entrance and install a pressure-reducing valve when needed. The relief valve is chosen according to this maximum pressure and the tank volume, and an expansion tank absorbs the expansion of the heated water. These three components work as a whole: they protect the tank, the piping and the users.

Manufacturer’s data

  • Capacity: 120 US gallons
  • Heat exchanger: double-wall copper in parallel helicoidal lines, exchange surface of 55.6 sq. ft.
  • Maximum pressure: 125 psi (ASME)
  • Maximum domestic hot water flow: 27 gpm, value to be reduced for high-temperature and continuous-flow applications
  • Boiler connection: 2 in NPT male
  • Drain valve: ¾ in brass ball valve, maximum working pressure of 150 psi
  • Diameter: 28 in
  • Weight: 530 lb (610 lb shipping)
  • Potable water: copper components meet the NSF 61 standard and the low lead requirements

Output at commercial temperatures

Thermo 2000’s table gives output in US gallons per hour, as first hour / continuous, according to boiler capacity, with cold water at 40 °F and boiler water at 180 °F. In an institutional building or a kitchen, the 140 °F and 160 °F columns are often the most useful:

  • 150,000 BTU/h (44 kW): 228 / 181 at 140 °F; 201 / 181 at 160 °F; 377 / 258 at 110 °F
  • 250,000 BTU/h (73 kW): 349 / 301 at 140 °F; 321 / 301 at 160 °F; 549 / 430 at 110 °F
  • 400,000 BTU/h (117 kW): 530 / 482 at 140 °F; 502 / 482 at 160 °F; 807 / 688 at 110 °F

Real output therefore depends on the electric boiler and on the building’s electrical service. We establish these two figures first, then read the table at the line that truly matches your installation.

Where the DoubleMax 120-9A fits

A seniors’ residence concentrates baths and care in the morning. An early childhood centre washes dishes and hands all day long. A small hotel sees its guests shower at the same hour. A commercial kitchen needs hotter water for the pot sink. In each of these cases, the 120 US gallon reserve covers the peak while the electric boiler maintains production. A thermostatic mixing valve then delivers the right temperature for each use.

A double-wall exchanger for potable water

The exchanger’s copper pipes are double-wall: two thicknesses of metal separate the boiler water from the potable water. This design is often requested in public buildings, or when the heating loop contains an additive. It comes on top of the copper components’ compliance with the NSF 61 standard.

Delivery and location

The tank weighs 530 lb empty and measures 28 in in diameter. Its exact height is confirmed with the manufacturer’s order sheet; we compare it with the free height of your mechanical room before ordering. The delivery route, the floor capacity once the tank is filled and access to a drain are checked during the visit. The boiler connection is 2 in NPT male; the size of the potable water connections is confirmed with the same sheet.

Manufacturer’s warranty

Thermo 2000 provides a 10-year commercial warranty and a 15-year residential warranty on the tank and copper coils, as well as a 2-year warranty on mechanical parts. The category that applies to your building is specified in writing with the quote.

Installation of the Thermo 2000 DoubleMax 120-9A by AirGreen
