Rooms served by ducts, without multiplying visible units
In a renovation in Montreal, a residential project in Laval, or an office project in Longueuil, we can consider air conditioning without placing a visible unit on every wall. The YORK R Series 30,000 BTU ducted air conditioner uses a concealed indoor unit connected to ducts that deliver air to ceiling or wall grilles. YORK specifically provides for its installation above a suspended ceiling or in an open storage space suitable for the equipment.
At AirGreen, we approach a ducted project by considering the equipment, ductwork, and technical access together. Our experience with this type of installation leads us to consider return air, building constraints, and future maintenance from the planning stage onward.
For the pairing presented here, the documented efficiency is 16 SEER. The designation "R Series 20 SEER" refers to a range that can reach 20 SEER, not to the efficiency of all its configurations.
The correct pairing: DHR30NDB21S indoors and DHR30CSB21S outdoors
We identify this version by the DHR30NDB21S ducted indoor unit, paired with the DHR30CSB21S outdoor unit. These references distinguish it from the ceiling cassette or floor-ceiling unit offered in the same series.
Our product sheet lists AHRI 8578445 as the reference for this system.
Although its commercial name uses the word air conditioner, the catalog classifies this system as a heat pump: we can therefore examine its use for cooling and heating, within the published operating limits.
The performance specific to the 30,000 BTU ducted format
The table dedicated to ducted units, on page 19 of the YORK catalog - page 21 of the PDF, provides the following specifications for the DHR30NDB21S:

These figures come from the ducted model column, not from that of another indoor unit in the R Series.
We therefore distinguish the commercial 30,000 BTU category from the manufacturer's stated nominal capacity of 28,200 BTU/h. We also retain the SEER, EER, and HSPF ratings from this documentation, without presenting them as SEER2, EER2, or HSPF2 values.
The R Series is equipped with a variable-speed compressor. This modulation is one of the characteristics to examine alongside the building's needs, particularly when room usage varies throughout the day.
Multiple grilles do not mean multiple independent temperatures
The configuration presented belongs to the single-zone system family, consisting of an outdoor unit and an indoor unit. The ducted version then distributes the air through a duct network.
We therefore separate two decisions: the rooms to be served and the desired level of independence between them. A homeowner who wants a common setpoint for several spaces does not have the same needs as a homeowner who wants to adjust each bedroom separately.
For your proposal, we suggest identifying the priority rooms, their occupancy schedules, and the temperature differences currently observed. We do not infer the number of adjustable zones from the number of supply registers alone.
Static pressure and airflow: two figures to read together
YORK describes this unit as a medium-static-pressure model and publishes a range up to 0.8 in. of water column. The catalog also provides the available airflow rates, but on this page it does not present a complete curve linking each airflow rate to each pressure.
For the design, we compare these characteristics with the planned duct network: run lengths, changes in direction, connections, and grilles. We want to verify how the system is expected to operate as a whole, rather than relying solely on the 826 CFM figure.
This value corresponds to the unit’s published maximum airflow rate. We present it neither as the airflow rate of each grille nor as a guarantee of results for any duct network.
A sound level linked to the selected speed
The brochure associates the four airflow rates, 826, 767, 708, and 531 ft³/min, with the respective indoor sound pressure levels of 47, 46, 44, and 40 dB(A). We compare these values in pairs: the maximum airflow rate and minimum sound level do not correspond to the same setting.
For the outdoor unit DHR30CSB21S, the published level is 58 dB(A).
In our installation proposal, we pay particular attention to areas where noise would be most disruptive: near a home office, bedroom, or terrace. We define acoustic expectations before installation, without promising that a concealed unit will necessarily be inaudible.
Heating down to −18 °C: clarify the system’s role in winter
The outdoor unit has a heating operating range of −18 to 24 °C. In cooling mode, the published range is −18 to 46 °C.
The rated heating capacity of 31,200 BTU/h is nevertheless given under the catalog’s test conditions, which notably indicate an outdoor temperature of 8 °C dry-bulb. We therefore do not automatically attribute it to operation at −18 °C.
The technical page does not provide capacity or coefficient of performance figures specific to −15 °C or −18 °C. For a project on the North Shore, the South Shore, or in Montérégie, we propose explicitly determining the expected contribution of this heat pump and the role of supplemental heating. The minimum operating temperature is not sufficient to justify removing an existing heating system.
Design the ducted installation around the building, the ducts, and maintenance
Draw the supply and return air routes before choosing the grilles
In addition to the catalog, the YORK installation manual separately illustrates the supply duct, return air, filter, and connections to the unit. The distribution diagram confirms that the project is not limited to the visible outlets in the rooms.
For a renovation study in Longueuil, for example, we might start with a plan comprising two bedrooms, an office, and a corridor. We would then ask where to place the supply outlets, how to arrange the return, and which access points to preserve. This is a design scenario, not an installation assigned to this YORK model.
One detail in the manual also deserves to be retained: the bottom-return configuration illustrated in this section is specified for 18,000 BTU units only. We do not apply this option to the 30,000 BTU model without technical confirmation.
A 50 × 22 × 11 in cabinet that must remain accessible
The indoor unit DHR30NDB21S measures 50 × 22 × 11 in, in the order width × depth × height, or approximately 1,270 × 559 × 279 mm. Its published net weight is 34 kg.
We do not treat these dimensions as the project's complete required opening. In the installation plan, we also allow for the space needed for connections and future servicing.
For the outdoor unit, the catalog lists the dimensions as 39 × 31 × 17 in. We retain their published order here; their orientation and installation clearances must be confirmed on the applicable technical drawing before preparing the support.
Our recommendation is simple: provide service access before closing the ceiling. We want to be able to reach the components requiring inspection without turning a service call into a finishing project.
Two power supplies to include in the quote
The manufacturer specifies that the indoor and outdoor units require separate power supplies. They operate on a nominal 208/230 V, single-phase, 60 Hz power supply, with different requirements:

These values come from the tables specific to the two units.
We have the qualified professional size the conductors and protection devices based on the documentation and nameplate of the delivered equipment. A maximum protection of 40 A does not describe a continuous consumption of 40 A.
Refrigerant, piping, and condensate: three separate checks
This system uses R-410A. The published refrigerant connections for the ducted version are 3/8 in. for liquid and 5/8 in. for gas.
For the 30,000 BTU outdoor unit, the catalog states a maximum total piping length of 50 m and a maximum elevation difference of 15 m. We use these limits to assess the feasibility of the route; they do not define the length included in an installation quote.
The integrated condensate pump is one of the components described for the ducted unit. The indoor drain connection is specified as having a 1 in. outside diameter.
During our job preparation, we identify the drainage route and access to the pump. We propose checking the drainage before finishing work, then keeping its location in the installation file.
DWCR wired controller and Wi-Fi: knowing what is actually included
The ducted-model page lists the DWCR wired zone controller as standard equipment.
Our sales sheet mentions optional Wi-Fi. However, the brochure does not provide a Wi-Fi module reference for this pairing. Its presentation of the EWPE Smart app targets the P, X, and Z series; it therefore does not confirm this app for the R Series.
We have the compatible accessory identified before including a telephone control in the quote. For a homeowner primarily looking for a weekly schedule, the catalog also describes the DWCR2 controller for the R Series, with seven-day programming and locking functions. Its supply and compatibility with the selected configuration remain to be specified.
Our ducted-system projects: three constraints, three on-site solutions
The following examples come from our published projects. They involve GREE and Fujitsu equipment and illustrate our integration work without attributing their features or results to the YORK model presented.
In Montreal: routing the ducts through a renovated space
During the installation of an 18,000 BTU GREE ducted system in Montreal, we worked with restricted attic access and little space between the walls. The routing of the ducts had to preserve the renovated layout. We organized their path to three discreet outlets, with the goal of keeping the network out of sight. This project illustrates why we examine the available pathways before definitively setting the unit's position.
In Laval: maintaining access around a recessed unit
In Saint-Vincent-de-Paul, Laval, our installation of a GREE All Match Slim Duct R32 took place in an especially tight mechanical space. We coordinated the positioning of the unit, the connections, and the return air while keeping future maintenance among the installation criteria. The constraint was not only getting the unit in: we also had to preserve the ability to service it.
In Brossard: addressing an acoustic concern
On the South Shore, our installation of an 18,000 BTU Fujitsu ducted system in Brossard included a concealed network and three air outlets. The owner placed particular importance on noise, so we incorporated soundproofing measures and carefully insulated the ducts. The customer feedback reported in our summary highlighted the comfort achieved and the discreet nature of the installation.
HVAC maintenance covering the entire system
For your HVAC maintenance, we recommend keeping a sheet indicating access to the filter, unit, and drainage, as well as the control references. Our experience with installations in tight spaces shows the importance of maintaining this access after the work is completed.
Between visits, we invite you to report any persistent change in noise, perceived airflow, or comfort. To prepare for a diagnosis, note the setpoint, the mode used, the rooms affected, and any displayed code. These observations help describe the problem without prematurely concluding that there is a compressor failure or a lack of refrigerant.
We also recommend not blocking the grilles with furniture and not closing all the outlets: the YORK manual requires keeping at least one supply outlet open.
A warranty tied to the installation conditions
The 10-10-0 notation on our sheet means ten years for the compressor, ten years for the parts, and no years of labor included in this designation.
The 2020 YORK catalogue presents standard coverage of seven years for the compressor and five years for parts, followed by an extension to ten years after registration for eligible residential installations. Coverage including labor is also described, with the purchase of additional coverage.
We therefore have the applicable conditions for the system being sold, whether the premises are for residential or commercial use, and the additional protections selected clearly specified. The quote should distinguish the stated duration from the costs actually covered.
Compare the installed price without assuming a grant
For your ducted air conditioner installation, we suggest having three price components itemized: the equipment and its controls, the duct network and connections, and related work such as openings and finishing.
This breakdown helps explain why two quotes for the same appliance may cover different work. In particular, we want the number of grilles, the return air, service access, and electrical work to be identified.
Our product sheet states ENERGY STAR®: no and cold-climate certification: no. Hydro-Québec specifies that heat pumps installed as of November 26, 2025 must be ENERGY STAR® certified to qualify for the corresponding LogisVert grant. Based on the information provided for this YORK system, we therefore do not anticipate this grant in its budget.
