A built-in air conditioning system that leaves room for the layout

Preserving the available wall space, integrating air conditioning into a renovation and distributing air through grilles selected for each room: this is what we aim for with a ducted installation. For a project in Montreal, Laval or Longueuil, the 48,000 BTU YORK R Series makes it possible to consider an indoor unit concealed above a suspended ceiling or in a suitable mechanical space. The manufacturer provides for distribution through ducts, with ceiling or wall diffusers.

This configuration pairs the outdoor unit DHR48CSB21S with the indoor unit DHR48NDB21S. Despite the commercial designation “ducted air conditioner,” we are presenting a heat pump system that can cool and heat within the documented operating ranges.

At AirGreen, we consider equipment selection and ductwork design to be inseparable decisions. Our ducted installation in Îles-Laval illustrates this approach: the available space, return air, duct routes and service access were assessed together before integrating the equipment.

The efficiency rating to use for this pairing is 16 SEER

The designation “R Series 20 SEER” does not mean that this ducted version achieves 20 SEER. The catalog presents a range capable of reaching this level, but the column for the DHR48NDB21S indicates 16 SEER, 9.05 EER and 9 HSPF. We use the values specific to the model for comparisons and quotations.

We also retain the designations used in the document: SEER, EER and HSPF, without renaming them SEER2, EER2 or HSPF2. The technical page provided does not publish these latter ratings for the pairing shown.

YORK DHR48NDB21S specifications

Our commercial sheet associates this system with AHRI 8578481. To identify the equipment precisely, we retain this reference along with the two model numbers, rather than using only the designation “YORK 48,000 BTU.”

These specifications apply to the ducted version. We do not substitute for them the maximum capacities of a ceiling cassette using the same outdoor unit: the catalog tables distinguish between the different indoor configurations.

Size also for periods of low demand

The R Series outdoor unit uses a variable-speed compressor. For this ducted combination, the published lower cooling limit is 20,400 BTU/h, or 42.5% of its nominal 48,000 BTU/h capacity. This ratio, calculated from the YORK table, is a sizing reference; it does not represent minimum electrical consumption.

We therefore examine requirements when the building is under heavy load, as well as when occupancy decreases. A large capacity can meet significant demand without automatically being the best choice for a partially used space.

As an example of sizing, if a study of an area established a cooling requirement of 12,000 BTU/h during a given period, we would compare that result with the published lower limit of 20,400 BTU/h. We would not consider variable-speed technology sufficient justification to accept the model without continuing the analysis.

For your project, we propose documenting the area to be served, its periods of use, and the spaces that currently experience the greatest discomfort. This description provides a more useful basis than choosing a capacity solely to have a “reserve.”

Distribute 1,475 cu. ft./min without confusing total airflow with airflow per room

The DHR48NDB21S has four published airflow levels. The catalog associates them with the following sound pressure levels:

We read these data together: 41 dB(A) corresponds to the lowest airflow in the table, not operation at 1,475 cu. ft./min. These levels describe the unit under the manufacturer's measurement conditions; they are not a measure of noise in each room after installation.

The maximum airflow is that of the entire unit. For our distribution proposal, we allocate the requirements among the zones rather than assigning this air volume to each grille. The catalogue does not, moreover, establish a universal number of outlets for this model.

The range of 0 to 0.8 in. of water column also helps us assess the ductwork's compatibility. The brochure describes a unit with medium static pressure, but does not provide a complete curve on this page that would allow us to guarantee maximum airflow and maximum pressure simultaneously. We therefore have the planned operating point validated before selecting the final ductwork.

Distribution to several spaces, with single-zone control

We can study several supply grilles without presenting the system as a multizone system. YORK classifies this combination among single-zone configurations, with one outdoor unit paired with one indoor unit.

For a space comprising a main room and offices, we therefore ask whether a common temperature meets the requirements. When each room needs its own independent setpoint, we address that need separately in the design. The number of diffusers is not sufficient to establish the number of adjustable zones.

We also recommend clearly identifying the rooms served in the proposal. An expression such as “upstairs cooling” becomes much more precise when accompanied by a distribution plan and a description of the expected control.

Heating at −18 °C: distinguishing operation from available heat

The heating operating range of the DHR48CSB21S extends down to −18 °C and up to 24 °C. In cooling mode, the catalogue indicates an outdoor range of −18 to 46 °C.

However, we do not present the 54,500 BTU/h of nominal heating capacity as guaranteed output at −18 °C. The nominal conditions indicated below the table use, among other things, an outdoor dry-bulb temperature of 8 °C. The page does not provide capacity or coefficient-of-performance figures specific to −15 °C or −18 °C.

For a property on the North Shore, the South Shore, or in Montérégie, we recommend defining this YORK's winter role before modifying the existing heating system. Our recommendation must specify what the heat pump is expected to cover and which equipment will provide backup when necessary.

Wired control included and options to be identified

The ducted model page presents the DWCR wired controller as standard equipment. For more detailed scheduling needs, the catalog also describes the DWCR2, intended for the R Series, with a seven-day schedule, up to eight daily events, and lockout functions. We have the selected controller specified in the quote.

Our sales sheet mentions optional Wi-Fi, but the provided brochure does not confirm a module for this pairing. It associates the EWPE Smart app with the P, X, and Z series. We therefore do not promise this app for the R Series without validation of the compatible accessory.

From location selection to commissioning: prepare a complete ducted-system project

Reserve space for the equipment and future servicing

The indoor unit is listed as 53 × 29.5 × 14 in, in the order width × depth × height, with a net weight of 56 kg. We use these dimensions in inches for an initial layout, then have the technical drawing confirmed before fabricating the supports and connections.

The outdoor unit has catalog dimensions of 38 × 53 × 16 in and a net weight of 105 kg. For this unit, we have the orientation of the dimensions confirmed on the applicable drawing rather than inferring its height and depth from an abbreviated line.

In our layout study, we also reserve access to connections and serviceable components. We propose determining the location of the access panels before closing the ceiling, along with verifying the handling route. The goal is not only to be able to install the equipment, but also to access it afterward.

Provide two separate power circuits

YORK documentation requires a separate power supply for each unit. The nominal power supply is 208/230 V, single-phase, 60 Hz; the electrical specifications differ between the outdoor unit and the ducted indoor unit.

We distinguish these values from operating consumption: 70 A represents a published maximum protection rating here, not a stated continuous consumption. We have the qualified professional confirm the conductors, protective devices, and disconnecting means according to the nameplate of the delivered equipment.

To compare quotes, we recommend checking that the electrical work covers both units. An offer that provides only for the outdoor connection does not describe the entire requirement specified by the manufacturer.

Organize the refrigerant routing and water drainage

The YORK uses R-410A, with 3/8 in. liquid and 5/8 in. gas refrigerant connections. For this outdoor unit, the catalog specifies a maximum total piping length of 70 m and a maximum elevation difference of 15 m. These limits help assess route feasibility; they do not represent a length automatically included in the installed price.

The ducted unit has an integrated condensate pump, and its drain connection is specified as having a 1 in. outside diameter. We clarify the drainage route and access to the pump before finishing work.

In addition to the catalog, the YORK installation manual LIT-12012157 calls for leak testing at the refrigerant connections and evacuation. We include these operations in the commissioning preparation rather than replacing them with a simple startup test.

Design the return air with as much attention as the supply air

The installation diagram on page 9 of the YORK manual shows the filter, return air, and supply duct as parts of the same circuit. We rely on this arrangement to prepare a complete system rather than a set of isolated outlets.

For your HVAC installation, we propose three validation steps:

  1. Before installation, confirm the rooms served, routes, access, and responsibilities for related work.
  2. Before finishing work, inspect the connections, insulation, drainage, and maintenance access.
  3. During commissioning, check the controls, operation, and air distribution, then explain the settings to the owner.

We want these points to be included in the project planning. They make the project easier to follow and prevent the commissioning from being reduced to the fact that cold air comes out of a grille.

Three lessons from our projects in Montreal, Laval, and Longueuil

Our site reports provide concrete examples of integration and maintenance. The following interventions concern other systems, not a documented installation of the YORK DHR48CSB21S/DHR48NDB21S pairing.

In Îles-Laval: choose the orientation before connecting the ducts

For our installation of a GREE All Match Slim Duct R32 in Îles-Laval, we worked in a ceiling cavity containing a wooden frame, insulation, and existing connections. We studied the orientation of the enclosure to preserve the necessary clearances and service access. The result described in our report is an integrated installation that avoids multiplying visible units in the rooms.

In Montreal: measure before concluding that capacity is insufficient

During maintenance at a downtown Montreal store, we examined airflow problems near the display windows and in certain passage areas. The readings revealed dust in secondary ducts and unbalanced airflow. Our work notably included cleaning and adjusting the balancing dampers. This case reminds us that localized discomfort calls for a network diagnosis, not just consideration of the unit's size.

In Longueuil: adapting an existing network during a modernization

In a multi-purpose building in Longueuil, we modernized a central installation with duct leaks, noise, and unbalanced airflow. The project included duct modifications and final balancing. Our report records a reduction of 5 dB in work areas, along with positive feedback from the managers on the project follow-up. This result belongs to this specific modernization; we do not extrapolate it to every YORK ducted installation.

Maintaining a concealed system without waiting for comfort to decline

For HVAC maintenance, we suggest keeping a simple record: filter location, access to the enclosure, drainage route, control references, and commissioning observations.

The YORK manual specifically links repeated triggers of the E2 frost protection to checks of the filter and airflow. It asks that supply and return air be checked periodically. We therefore do not treat a recurring fault as a signal to clear without diagnosis.

For a service call, we invite you to photograph the displayed code and note the affected components, the mode used, and when the problem occurs. If there is a water mark or unusual noise, we recommend an inspection rather than improvised dismantling of the ceiling or enclosure.

10-10-0 warranty: specify the coverage that actually applies

Our commercial product sheet displays 10-10-0, meaning ten years for the compressor, ten years for parts, and no years of labor included under this designation.

The 2020 YORK catalog nevertheless distinguishes a standard warranty of seven years on the compressor and five years on parts, followed by a residential enhancement to ten years subject to registration. It also describes additional labor coverage requiring a separate purchase.

We confirm the conditions applicable to the sale and use of the premises. For a commercial property, we do not automatically apply coverage advertised for a residential application. The quote should also specify any travel fees and the conditions of any additional warranty.

Establishing the budget without confusing the equipment, ductwork, and subsidy

The price of an installed 48,000 BTU YORK ducted air conditioner should describe more than the two units. We propose distinguishing the equipment and its controls, the ductwork and grilles, the connections, and then the openings and finishes. We also specify the included piping length and any special access requirements.

Our product sheet indicates ENERGY STAR®: no and cold-climate certification: no. According to the conditions published by Hydro-Québec, heat pumps installed as of November 26, 2025 must be ENERGY STAR® certified to qualify for the corresponding LogisVert subsidy. Given the status indicated for this YORK system, we do not include this assistance in its budget.
