Quick facts
The 45° vertical oval elbow turns an oval duct 45° in the vertical plane. On its own, it makes a partial turn; used in pairs, it creates an offset that shifts the duct a few inches before bringing it back in line. It comes in 5 and 6 in.
Getting around an obstacle in a wall or ceiling
Between the basement and the upper floor, the cavities don’t always line up: a plate, a block, a water pipe or an electrical wire can be in the way. Two 90° turns would solve it, but they would restrict the air a lot and take up more room. The 45° offset keeps a smoother path, which helps the upstairs room get its airflow.
Making an offset
- Measure the offset needed.
- Install a first 45° elbow, then a short piece of oval duct cut to the right length.
- Finish with a second 45° elbow turned the other way.
- Screw and seal every joint with aluminum tape or mastic before closing the wall.
Vertical or flat?
The vertical elbow shifts the riser up or down. To turn while staying in the same plane, as in a ceiling, choose the 45° flat elbow. For a full turn, see the 90° elbows.

Offsetting the riser without a sharp turn
A riser sometimes has to shift a few inches to avoid an obstacle: two 45° elbows make that offset gently.
- Offsetting a riser to clear blocking or an obstacle
- Angled passage from floor to floor when cavities don’t line up
- Partial turn in a low ceiling or attic
- Forced-air and air exchanger systems in oval duct

Frequently asked questions
How do I make an offset with 45° elbows?
Install one 45° elbow, a short piece of oval duct, then a second 45° elbow turned the other way. The duct ends up shifted and parallel to where it started.
Why not two 90° elbows?
Two 90° turns slow the air much more and take more room than a 45° offset.
How is it different from the flat 45° elbow?
The vertical elbow shifts the duct up or down; the flat elbow turns it while staying in the same plane.
Can you install it?
Yes. We lay out oval-duct routes on our installations across Greater Montréal.
