A 9,000 BTU Ducted Unit, When the Room Matters More Than the Equipment
At AirGreen, we have been installing ducted systems long enough to know that the smallest capacity in a lineup is rarely a default choice. The 9,000 BTU GREE Crossover R32 is the unit we offer when a customer wants to heat and cool a specific area without any visible equipment: a primary bedroom added above the garage, a finished basement office, or a condo whose association prohibits wall-mounted units in visible common areas.
The indoor unit fits into a suspended ceiling, a corridor soffit, or a service space, and the air exits through grilles. The result is a room with no visible trace of its HVAC system.
What a concealed unit changes
A wall-mounted heat pump makes its presence known: it requires wall space, clearance, and a directed airflow. A ducted system moves that constraint to the ceiling and replaces it with a design question. Where will the ducts run, how long will they be, how many grilles are needed, and what will the pressure drop be? This requires more work during planning and far fewer compromises once the installation is complete.
The Crossover R32 is a high-static-pressure unit. The distinction is practical: a low-pressure ducted unit pushes air a few feet and struggles as soon as an elbow or filter is added. This one handles a real duct network, with branches leading to two or three grilles, without airflow collapsing in the farthest room.

Heating when it is truly cold

The figure to remember is not the first one, but the second. At -15 °C, the unit still delivers 9,500 BTU/h, which is more than it delivers at -8 °C. A well-designed variable-speed compressor adjusts its frequency to demand: when the heating load increases, it increases with it. That is exactly the behaviour we want for a Quebec winter, and it is why this model has earned ENERGY STAR's cold-climate designation.
When 9,000 BTU is the right choice - and when it is not
We regularly refuse to sell this capacity. An oversized unit is one that starts, reaches the setpoint within a few minutes, stops, and then starts again. This short cycling costs more in electricity, wears out the compressor, and, above all, does not dehumidify.
The 9,000 BTU model suits an approximately 300 to 400 square foot, well-insulated area with moderate sun exposure and standard-height ceilings. A large open-concept main floor, a room with a full south-facing curtain wall, or an uninsulated basement requires the next capacity up. We perform a load calculation before recommending anything, and sometimes conclude that the right answer is a 12,000 or 18,000 BTU unit.
Humidity, the variable people forget
This model removes 1.69 pints of water per hour from the surrounding air. In July in Montreal, this figure often determines actual comfort more than the displayed temperature. A room at 23 °C with 65% humidity is uncomfortable; the same room at 24 °C with 48% humidity is not. A properly sized unit runs for long periods at low speed and continuously dries the air, which an oversized unit never does.
Silence as a criterion
The indoor unit ranges from 24 to 38 dB(A). The low end is below the sound level of a library, and it is the speed at which the unit operates most of the time. In a bedroom, this translates into a gentle airflow that you stop noticing after two days. The outdoor unit operates at 52 dB(A), which matters when it is near a neighbour's window - a common situation on the Plateau or in Verdun.
What the installation really requires
Space
The indoor unit measures 32.67 x 29.69 x 11.81 inches. Its 11.81-inch height is the determining constraint: sufficient ceiling clearance is required, along with room for the duct connections and filter access. We check this dimension on site before confirming feasibility, never from plans alone.
The outdoor unit measures 31.58 x 13.78 x 21.84 inches and connects with 1/4 - 3/8 inch piping, the smallest in the lineup. On a narrow rear balcony or in a city backyard, this compactness can make the difference between a feasible project and an abandoned one.
Electrical
220 V power supply, minimum circuit ampacity of 10 A, maximum protection of 15 A. These are modest requirements, so it is often possible to add the circuit without modifying the existing panel. We verify the panel's capacity during the quotation stage, before the electrician comes out.
R-32 refrigerant
R-32 has a global warming potential approximately three times lower than the R-410A it replaces, and it transfers heat more efficiently, which partly explains the efficiency ratings above. Our technicians are trained and equipped to work with A2L refrigerants, using the detectors and procedures required by the standard.
