What the unit really costs over a season
The listed price of a ducted system says little about what it will cost you. What matters is the total of the installed price, minus the financial incentive, plus seven winters of energy consumption. The GREE Extreme R32 12,000 BTU performs well on all three counts, which is why it is among our most frequent renovation recommendations.

The unit delivers more heat at -15 °C than at -8 °C. This is not a typo: a variable-speed compressor increases its frequency as demand rises, and continues doing so as long as the heat exchanger can keep up. This is the performance that earns the model ENERGY STAR's cold-climate designation, and it is exactly what you want from a unit that has to carry a Quebec home in January.
$1,236 in financial assistance
This model qualifies for Hydro-Québec's LogisVert program for $1,236 for owners of existing homes, and qualifies for the program's enhanced incentive thanks to its cold-climate designation.
One clarification to avoid disappointment: the amount shown in some brochures applies to assistance for multi-unit buildings, not to a single homeowner. We cite only the amount that applies to you, and verify it using Hydro-Québec's official tool when preparing the application, since it varies according to the installation date.
The calculation we do with our clients
Take an area currently heated by baseboard heaters and consuming approximately 6,000 kWh per season. With an average COP between 2.5 and 2.8 over all heating hours, producing the same amount of heat requires roughly 2,200 to 2,400 kWh. The annual difference amounts to hundreds of dollars, and it repeats every year.
We refuse to turn this reasoning into a specific savings promise: your actual consumption depends on insulation, thermostat settings, exposure and the winter you get. But the order of magnitude is reliable, and it is based on certified COPs rather than on a catalogue average.
Airflow, and a warning
Maximum airflow is 353 CFM, lower than that of the 9,000 BTU model in the same range. This results from the pairing of the indoor heat exchanger and the outdoor compressor, and has a direct practical implication: the ductwork must be generous. Use few tight bends, properly sized main sections, an accessible filter and sufficient return air. A restrictive network on this unit produces disappointing airflow in the farthest room, and no adjustment can make up for ductwork that is too small.
Summer comfort
2.96 pints of water per hour. In the central neighbourhoods of Montreal, July humidity contributes more to discomfort than temperature. A properly sized unit runs for long periods at low speed and continuously dehumidifies; an oversized unit reaches the setpoint too quickly and leaves the air feeling heavy.
Installation data
Indoor unit: 32.67 x 29.69 x 11.81 inches, sound level of 26 to 39 dB(A). Outdoor unit: 34.38 x 14.80 x 21.84 inches, 55 dB(A), with 1/4 - 3/8 inch connections.
220 V power supply, 11 A MCA and 15 A MOP, measured at the outdoor unit. Since a 15 A circuit fits in most existing panels, the project's electrical cost remains manageable - we confirm this after inspecting the panel.
R-32 and warranty
R-32 refrigerant, an A2L-class refrigerant with low global warming potential. Our technicians are trained and equipped for this class. The manufacturer's warranty covers the compressor and parts for ten years, with possible extension to labour.
