24.5 SEER2: the highest efficiency in the entire ducted range

The 18,000 BTU GREE Extreme R32 boasts a SEER2 of 24.5. No other R-32 ducted unit we distribute comes close to this figure, across all series and capacities. In a market where most ducted units fall between 18 and 22, the difference is real and shows up directly on your summer energy bill.

What makes this model interesting, however, is not that figure. It is the fact that it did not achieve it by sacrificing heating performance.

Certified figures

AHRI Certificate 216618234, ENERGY STAR listing 4514338.

  • SEER2 of 24.5 and EER2 of 14.0 in cooling mode
  • HSPF2 of 9.4 in heating mode
  • At -8 °C: 15,500 BTU/h, COP of 2.86
  • At -15 °C: 17,000 BTU/h, COP of 1.8
  • Down to -30 °C: 10,100 BTU/h at maximum capacity

At -15 °C, the unit delivers 17,000 BTU/h, or 94% of its nominal capacity and significantly more than its 15,500 BTU/h at -8 °C. The variable-speed compressor increases its frequency as demand rises. For an entire floor of a cottage in Laval or Blainville, that is the difference between a system that carries the house through January and one that hands the job over to baseboard heaters at the first cold snap.

$1,860 in LogisVert rebates

This model qualifies for $1,860 for the owner of an existing home, and carries ENERGY STAR's cold-climate designation, which unlocks the program's bonus. That is $96 more than the Crossover with the same capacity: Hydro-Québec calculates the rebate based on certified cold-weather performance, and the better performance at -15 °C translates directly into a higher amount. We validate the figure using Hydro-Québec's official tool when preparing your application.

The honest trade-off to know

At -30 °C, this model delivers 10,100 BTU/h with a COP of 1.16. The 18,000 BTU Crossover drops to 9,900 BTU/h but with a COP of 1.42. In other words, in extreme cold, the Extreme provides slightly more heat while consuming more energy.

During a Montreal winter, the number of hours below -25 °C can be counted in the dozens, compared with thousands of hours between -5 and -15 °C. That is why we prioritize efficiency in the usual temperature range rather than performance in extreme conditions. If your home is in the Laurentians or Lanaudière, where nights at -28 °C are common, the conversation changes and we will tell you so.

883 CFM, and what the ductwork needs to be

Maximum airflow reaches 883 CFM, enough to supply four to five grilles. The unit is designed for high static pressure, allowing it to push air through a real network of ducts with branches and a filter without the airflow collapsing at the end of the line.

A 24.5 SEER2 rating is a laboratory rating if the ductwork cannot keep up. A flexible duct crushed in a ceiling cavity, three consecutive elbows, an undersized return: each of these flaws costs more in practice than the difference between two models. We calculate the pressure drop before installation and adjust the duct sizes accordingly.

Humidity and noise

Moisture removal of 3.80 pints of water per hour. Indoor sound level of 24 to 40 dB(A) — the low end matches that of the smallest models in the range, which is remarkable at this capacity. Outdoor unit at 59 dB(A): position it away from bedroom windows, use anti-vibration pads, and provide sufficient clearance to prevent recirculation.

Installation data

Indoor unit: 44.48 x 29.69 x 11.81 inches. Outdoor unit: 37.72 x 15.83 x 25.98 inches. Connection size: 1/4 - 5/8 inch.

Power supply 220 V, MCA of 21 A, MOP of 25 A, as listed on the outdoor unit. That is five amps more than the Crossover with the same capacity, a difference that can matter on an already loaded electrical panel. We assess the panel before preparing a quote.

R-32 and warranty

R-32 refrigerant, A2L class, with a global warming potential approximately three times lower than that of R-410A. Ten-year manufacturer's warranty on the compressor and parts, with possible extension to labor.

Our service area
