GENERAL AIRSTAGE J-7S Mini-VRF 24,000 BTU with 1 indoor unit: one cassette to start, room for what comes next

This system is the machine sold under the Fujitsu AIRSTAGE name, identical in every respect: a 2-ton AOUK024SSAN7 outdoor unit, connected here to 1 indoor unit. Its manufacturer, Fujitsu General Limited, has gone by GENERAL Inc. since January 1, 2026. Same factory, same manufacturer's brochure, same warranty: the nameplate changes, the machine stays.

The case in mind: the small boutique or neighbourhood salon, a single room, a suspended ceiling, a shop window that heats up in summer and a door that lets the cold in all winter. One compact cassette goes into the ceiling grid, and that is it for now. The outdoor unit, for its part, can feed up to 5 indoor units. The day the back room, the staff room or a treatment cabin needs its own temperature, a new unit is connected without changing the outdoor unit, as long as the total capacity stays within what the AOUK024SSAN7 can serve.

That is how a careful merchant thinks: pay for today's space without closing any doors. It still has to be planned at the very first visit.

GENERAL or Fujitsu AIRSTAGE: the same machine

Fujitsu General was bought in August 2025 by Paloma Rheem Holdings, the owner of Rheem since 1988. The name change followed on January 1, 2026. The head office and the R&D centre stayed in Kawasaki, Japan; the factories, the AIRSTAGE products, the model numbers and the warranty program did not move. For Canada, sales moved to Rheem Canada in February 2026; AirGreen still buys from Groupe Master.

The Fujitsu brand is being phased out, and during the transition the same machine is sold under two names. Both show up in quotes, so we post both product pages, and the table lines up two identical columns.

Product pageThis pageFujitsu AIRSTAGE J-7S 1-zone 24,000 BTU

Under the former name, the same system is described on the Fujitsu AIRSTAGE J-7S 1-zone page.

A J-7S is a compact variable refrigerant flow (VRF) Heat Pump system, the kind people call mini-VRF. One outdoor unit circulates refrigerant to one or several indoor units, and each one can get its own control. Indoor units are picked room by room from four families (wall-mounted, compact cassette, slim ducted, multi-position air handler), and they only work with J-7S outdoor units, just like their accessories. The product page does not lock in the type or the capacity of the indoor unit: both are chosen at your place, during the visit.

In a store with a suspended ceiling, the cassette is often the obvious pick, for practical reasons:

  • it takes the place of one tile in a standard suspended ceiling, with no unit hanging on the wall behind the counter;
  • its built-in condensate pump lifts the condensate, which leaves more freedom for routing the drain;
  • its 6 fan speeds let it stay discreet when the store is quiet and move more air when it is full;
  • the family covers 4,000 to 18,000 BTU/h, depending on the model selected.

That last point deserves a straight answer. A cassette from this range tops out at 18,000 BTU/h, while the outdoor unit is 24,000 BTU. If the space needs more than one cassette can deliver, we will tell you at the visit, and the conversation will turn to a multi-position air handler on ducts or a second indoor unit. Better to hear it before the work than in the middle of a heat wave.

On efficiency, this system shows a SEER2 of 22.2, an HSPF2 of 11.3 and an EER2 of 15.7. Those three values reach the maximums the brochure gives for the J-7S series, where COP2 goes up to 4.64. In deep cold, the COP measured at −15 °C is 2.44. The table also gives heating capacities at −8 °C and at −15 °C; they are two different test points, to be read as they are. For the dimensioned drawings, see the manufacturer's spec sheet attached to the product, available in French and English.

In winter, a store loses heat every time the door opens. The brochure cover announces heating down to −26 °C, with no low-temperature lockout, and specifies that 2-ton units keep up to 89% of their capacity at −18 °C. The outdoor unit's base pan is heated, which helps defrost water drain away instead of freezing in place. In summer, cooling stays reliable up to 50 °C outdoors, a welcome margin in a back lane that traps heat.

The refrigerant is R-32, a low global warming potential refrigerant. The series uses 12% less of it than the previous generation, and the system charge does not exceed 6 kg (13.2 lb). In a space open to the public, three options are worth discussing: the leak detection sensor kit offered for the cassette, the gas sensor kit with audible and visual alarm, and the refrigerant shut-off valve kit with backup power.

A good part of the installation is decided at the first visit, especially if units are to be added later:

  • the location of the outdoor unit: at 998 mm (39-5/16 in.) high it fits below a window, and the current generation is 15% lighter with a 16% smaller footprint than the previous one; behind a store, on the lane side, it sits on a base or a bracket;
  • the route of the refrigerant piping, the cable and the drain to the cassette, keeping in mind the rooms that could be added, since the series allows up to 120 m (393 ft) of total piping;
  • the power supply, which calls for 208/230 V with an MCA of 19 A and a maximum overcurrent protection of 20 A.

Once the cassette is in, a refrigeration technician does the commissioning. For control, a wired remote controller near the counter is often enough in a store; the wired touch controller and the wireless remote are also available, and Wi-Fi is optional. If other units are added, the range's central controllers let you manage everything from one spot.

A cassette is serviced from below: remove the grille, clean the filter, put the grille back. In a salon where dust, hair and aerosol products float around, that filter deserves regular attention. For the rest of the system, AirGreen offers maintenance.

This system is ENERGY STAR cold climate certified (ID 3813049), and its outdoor unit appears on the Hydro-Québec list under AHRI number 216372779. The LogisVert list of October 27, 2026 shows a grant of $2,088 for it. The program's conditions, including the type of building that qualifies, should be checked before counting on that amount for a commercial space. On warranty, count on 12 years on the compressor, 12 years on parts and 6 years on labour, the 12-12-6 formula.

This configuration suits the merchant who wants one discreet unit today and an outdoor unit able to serve up to five tomorrow: boutique, hair or beauty salon, small service counter. A space that already knows it will have three or four zones is better off starting with a multi-unit configuration from day one.
