GENERAL AIRSTAGE J-7S Mini-VRF 36,000 BTU, 8 indoor units: the Heat Pump for a shared office floor
Let's start with the essentials: the GENERAL AIRSTAGE J-7S shown here and the Fujitsu AIRSTAGE twin are the same machine, namely the AOUK036SSAN7 outdoor unit with eight indoor units. Since January 1, 2026, Fujitsu General Limited has operated as GENERAL Inc.; for your floor, that changes neither the manufacturer's brochure nor the warranty.
The case on this page: a shared office floor, a coworking space or a small professional firm. An open area, two meeting rooms, a few closed offices, a kitchenette, one or two phone booths. Eight rooms, eight zones, and above all schedules that look nothing alike: the meeting room fills up for an hour and then empties, the corner office stays closed on Fridays, the open area empties in the evening. The challenge is not only to heat and cool, it is to avoid heating and cooling empty rooms.
GENERAL or Fujitsu AIRSTAGE: the same machine
To a building manager, a name change looks like a change of supplier. It isn't one. The buyer, Paloma Rheem Holdings, has owned Rheem since 1988; it acquired Fujitsu General Limited in August 2025, and the new name, GENERAL Inc., arrived on January 1, 2026. Nothing changes in what a manager keeps an eye on: head office and R&D centre in Kawasaki, Japan, factories, AIRSTAGE products, model numbers, warranty program. The Fujitsu name is fading out gradually; meanwhile, the same machine is sold under both names.
AirGreen, an AIRSTAGE Elite Plus installer, keeps both pages side by side so your comparison of quotes rests on identical data. In Canada, Rheem Canada has handled sales since February 2026; we still buy from Groupe Master.

See also the Fujitsu AIRSTAGE J-7S page with eight indoor units, which describes the same system.
A variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system links one outdoor unit to several indoor units and adjusts the refrigerant to what each room calls for. The AOUK036SSAN7 accepts up to nine indoor units; your floor has eight. On compatibility, the outdoor unit only accepts indoor units and accessories from the J-7S range.
The choice of units follows the ceiling and the use of each room:
- in the open area under a suspended ceiling, the compact cassette AUUA***KSA1, 4,000 to 18,000 BTU/h, sized for standard suspended ceilings, with a built-in condensate drain pump and 6 fan speeds;
- in the meeting rooms, the slim ducted ARUL***KSA1, 4,000 to 18,000 BTU/h, only 198 mm (7-13/16 in.) high, which shows nothing but grilles and includes a leak detection sensor;
- in a small closed office with a drywall ceiling, the wall-mounted ASUA***KSA1, 4,000 to 14,000 BTU/h, as quiet as 22 dB(A) in quiet mode;
- if the floor already has a duct network in good condition, the multi-position air handler ARUX***KSA1, 12,000 to 60,000 BTU/h, with 0.8 in. WC of static pressure.
Eight units on a 3-ton outdoor unit calls for rigour. An open area full of people and screens doesn't have the same needs as a phone booth. We set the total capacity at the visit, room by room, and we promise no combination before we have seen the space.
Central controls are what set a shared floor apart from a house. All optional, they let you manage every unit from a single point:
- the touch panel controller, installed at reception or in the manager's office, to see and adjust every zone;
- the system controller and the central remote controller, to frame schedules and group rooms together;
- in addition, a wired controller, a wired touch controller or a wireless remote in each room, for whoever is using it at the time.
To keep an eye on the floor remotely, add Wi-Fi, offered as an option. Schedule programming and the distribution of controls are set with you at commissioning, based on how the floor is actually used.
For the floor's operating budget, keep in mind a SEER2 of 21.7, an HSPF2 of 10.8 and an EER2 of 13.6. The brochure presents higher series maximums, as follows: SEER2 up to 22.2; HSPF2 up to 11.3; EER2 up to 15.7; COP2 up to 4.64. They describe the best of the J-7S range, not this configuration. The spec sheet also shows 26,200 BTU at −8 °C, and 36,400 BTU with a COP of 2.14 at −15 °C, test points we do not compare.
On a February Monday morning, when the floor has cooled down all weekend, the J-7S heats down to −26 °C according to the manufacturer, with no lockout at low temperature; the system is ENERGY STAR cold climate certified. On a downtown roof in July, the heat reflected by the gravel and the neighbouring walls makes itself felt: cooling stays reliable up to 50 °C outdoors, and the electronics are refrigerant-cooled.
In an older Quartier latin building, the outdoor unit can sit on the roof or on a rear balcony. At 998 mm (39-5/16 in.) high, 15% lighter with a 16% smaller footprint than the previous generation, it stays under the height of a railing. Its outdoor sound level is 57 dB(A), a figure to weigh when apartments look onto the same lane. The refrigerant piping can total 120 m (393 ft), enough to climb from a lower floor to the roof and serve all eight rooms; the main piping is 3/8 and 5/8 in. As a tenant, you will need the landlord's approval for the roof and the penetrations: we provide the technical information required. On the electrical side, the building's master electrician will plan for 208/230 V, an MCA of 29 A and an MOP of 30 A.
Running through your floor's ceilings is R-32, a low global warming potential refrigerant, with a maximum charge of 6 kg (13.2 lb) for the whole system and 12% less refrigerant than the older generation. Cassettes and wall units can take an optional leak sensor kit, and you can add a gas sensor kit with audible and visual alarm and a shut-off valve kit with backup power, useful in small closed rooms.
Maintenance is done outside office hours: filters, drains and condensate pumps, outdoor unit. Compressor and parts are warranted for 12 years and labour for 6, exactly as on the Fujitsu twin. The outdoor unit is on the Hydro-Québec list under AHRI certificate 216372781, with ENERGY STAR ID 3813050, and the LogisVert list of October 27, 2026 assigns it $3,144; for offices, eligibility for the program should be checked with Hydro-Québec before counting on it.
This system is for coworking operators, small firms and commercial building owners who want room-by-room comfort and centralized management. Your architect or property manager will find the dimensioned drawings in the manufacturer's spec sheet, in French and English.
