GENERAL AIRSTAGE J-7S VRF Heat Pump 48,000 BTU, 1 indoor unit: a multi-position air handler for the big hall, on an outdoor unit that takes up to 12

Here the GENERAL AIRSTAGE J-7S VRF 48,000 BTU system takes its most stripped-down form: the 4-ton AOUK048SSAN7 outdoor unit and a single indoor unit. It is the same system, bolt for bolt, as its twin Fujitsu AIRSTAGE page with 1 indoor unit. The manufacturer has not changed, it was simply renamed GENERAL Inc. on January 1, 2026; the manufacturer's brochure is identical, and the warranty (12 years for the compressor, as many for parts, 6 years for labour) does not change from one label to the other.

The building in mind is a specific one: the big open hall. A community hall in a church basement, a dance studio above a storefront, the multipurpose room of a recreation centre. These rooms go from empty to full all at once, and a group that is dancing gives off heat. You need equipment that heats hard in January and cools a packed room in June.

For this kind of space, we propose a multi-position air handler connected to a duct network, rather than a row of units hung on the walls. Air comes out of several grilles spread across the hall, the equipment stays hidden in a mechanical room, and the walls stay free for mirrors or exits. If we pick a J-7S outdoor unit over an ordinary central heat pump, it is because it leaves the door open for what comes next.

GENERAL or Fujitsu AIRSTAGE: the same machine

In Kawasaki, Japan, nothing has moved: same head office, same research and development centre, same factories. What changed is the name on the door. The new owner, Paloma Rheem Holdings, has held Rheem since 1988; it acquired Fujitsu General in August 2025, and the company took the name GENERAL Inc. on January 1, 2026. AIRSTAGE references were not renumbered, and the warranty program follows the machine. On the Canadian side, Rheem Canada has been selling the range since February 2026; we keep buying through Groupe Master.

The Fujitsu logo is gradually leaving the packaging, so the same outdoor unit is sold today under one name or the other. As an AIRSTAGE Elite Plus installer, we keep both pages online: you compare, you choose the logo you prefer, and the machine stays identical.

The Fujitsu version of this configuration is here: Fujitsu AIRSTAGE J-7S VRF 48,000 BTU with 1 indoor unit.

How a J-7S system works: the outdoor unit varies the refrigerant flow to match demand and sends it, through the refrigerant piping, to the indoor units connected to it. Those units are chosen room by room: multi-position air handler ARUX***KSA1, slim ducted ARUL***KSA1, compact cassette AUUA***KSA1 or wall-mounted ASUA***KSA1. None of them, and none of their accessories, connects to anything but a J-7S outdoor unit.

In a big hall, the multi-position air handler is the natural pick for concrete reasons:

  • three chassis (S, M and L) and a range of 12,000 to 60,000 BTU/h, so the equipment fits the hall rather than the other way around;
  • a static pressure of 0.8 in. WC, the highest of the four families, and three fan speeds to push air all the way to the grilles at the far end;
  • a built-in leak detection sensor from the factory.

The exact capacity of the air handler is set at the visit, once the hall is measured and its use understood: we promise no combination on paper.

Let's be frank about expandability. The AOUK048SSAN7 accepts up to 12 indoor units, but the sum of their capacities has to stay within what the outdoor unit can deliver. If the hall takes the full capacity today, connecting a changing room tomorrow will mean revisiting the split. If an expansion is already in your plans, tell us at the visit: we will choose the air handler accordingly. With 120 m (393 ft) of total piping allowed, 50% more than the previous generation, reaching a distant room in the same building remains possible.

On efficiency, keep three ratings in mind: SEER2 at 20.2, HSPF2 at 10.2 and EER2 at 11.4. In heating, capacity is 35,800 BTU at −8 °C and 41,500 BTU at −15 °C, the point where the COP stands at 2.1. The J-7S series reaches at best an EER2 of 15.7, an HSPF2 of 11.3, a COP2 of 4.64 and a SEER2 of 22.2: those are series maximums, not the values of this configuration. The outdoor unit is ENERGY STAR cold climate certified (ID 3813053) and its AHRI number 216372783 appears on the Hydro-Québec list.

A community hall has to stay usable in the middle of February. The manufacturer puts the heating limit at −26 °C, with no low-temperature lockout. Under the outdoor unit, a base pan heater is factory-built; the electronics, for their part, are cooled by the refrigerant. Come summer, cooling stays reliable, according to the brochure, up to 50 °C outdoors, against 46 °C for the previous generation.

The outdoor unit measures 37 × 12.63 × 39.31 in. (W × D × H), or 998 mm high; its weight is down 15% and its footprint down 16% compared with the previous generation. It sits on a pad or a stand along the building, away from the entrances, and its outdoor sound level is 60.0 dB(A). Electrical: a 208/230 V circuit, sized from an MCA of 36 A and an MOP of 40 A.

On the refrigerant side, the circuit contains R-32, with its low global warming potential, in a quantity 12% lower than in the previous generation, and never more than 6 kg (13.2 lb). The air handler already includes its leak sensor; for a hall open to the public, two options are worth discussing: the audible and visual alarm provided by the gas sensor kit, and the refrigerant shut-off valve kit, with backup power.

The air handler goes in the mechanical room, in the basement or in a service space, and connects to a new or existing duct network, supply and return, checked at the visit. The refrigerant line, cable and drain run to the outdoor unit, an access panel is provided for the filter, and a refrigeration technician handles the commissioning. The duct layout and the number of grilles are decided on site, with you.

For control, a wired controller on the hall wall suits an organization well: whoever is in charge sets the temperature without hunting for a remote. A wired touch controller and a wireless remote are available, Wi-Fi is optional, and if more units are added, the central controls (system controller, touch panel controller, central remote controller) bring the settings together in one place. Our HVAC team handles system maintenance on request.

In Hydro-Québec's LogisVert list dated October 27, 2026, the AOUK048SSAN7 outdoor unit is listed for a grant of $4,296. For a community or commercial building, eligibility depends on the program rules: we check it with you before that amount goes into your budget.

This 1-indoor-unit system is meant for:

  • community and parish halls that want a single machine;
  • dance, yoga or martial arts studios that care about clear walls;
  • organizations that plan to add zones later, room by room, on the same outdoor unit.
