GENERAL AIRSTAGE J-7S VRF 48,000 BTU, 10 indoor units: a partitioned office floor, one outdoor unit, one central controller

A partitioned office floor means an open area in the middle, closed offices along the windows, a few meeting rooms and a kitchenette where the heat climbs at lunchtime. Ten indoor units for a single floor, one AOUK048SSAN7 outdoor unit to supply them: that is the configuration of this GENERAL AIRSTAGE J-7S VRF 48,000 BTU.

Technically, there is nothing to choose between it and the Fujitsu AIRSTAGE version: same outdoor unit, same 10 indoor units, same factories. The manufacturer, known until the end of 2025 as Fujitsu General Limited, has been GENERAL Inc. since January 1, 2026; it publishes a single brochure for both brands and keeps the same warranty, 12 years for the compressor, as many for parts, and 6 years for labour.

For a building manager or a commercial tenant, the comfort of each office is not enough. You also need to manage the floor from one place and hand the maintenance to one company. The package proposed here meets those three needs: multi-position air handlers and cassettes inside, a central controller at reception, and AirGreen for the maintenance.

GENERAL or Fujitsu AIRSTAGE: the same machine

Paloma Rheem Holdings, which has overseen Rheem since 1988, became the owner of Fujitsu General in August 2025. From January 1, 2026, the company changed its corporate name to GENERAL Inc. without leaving Kawasaki, Japan, where its head office and R&D centre remain, and without touching the factories. AIRSTAGE products, their model numbers and the warranty program came through the change intact.

Since February 2026, Rheem Canada has been the one selling these units in Canada, and Groupe Master still supplies AirGreen. The Fujitsu brand is being withdrawn in stages, so the same unit can carry either name for a while. For the buyer who has to justify the choice to management, the two pages side by side show clearly that it is the same equipment, and our team, which holds AIRSTAGE Elite Plus installer status, installs one as readily as the other.

All the values of the Fujitsu version can be found on the Fujitsu AIRSTAGE J-7S VRF 48,000 BTU page with 10 indoor units.

On an office floor, a VRF Heat Pump replaces the old logic of one big unit blowing the same air everywhere. The J-7S outdoor unit distributes refrigerant to ten indoor units that each work according to the demand of their area: the office in full afternoon sun, the meeting room that fills up all at once, the open area that empties at the end of the day. Each area becomes one of the system's zones, with its own setpoint.

Two families of indoor units do most of the work on an office floor:

  • ARUX***KSA1 multi-position air handler: a range of 12,000 to 60,000 BTU/h, three chassis sizes (S, M or L), 3 fan speeds and 0.8 in. WC of static pressure. Installed in a mechanical space or above the grid ceiling, it connects to ductwork and serves the open area through several grilles. Its leak detection sensor is built in.
  • AUUA***KSA1 compact cassette: from 4,000 to 18,000 BTU/h, made to fit standard grid ceilings, with 6 fan speeds and a built-in condensate pump. It is the unit for closed offices and meeting rooms, since it takes the place of a ceiling tile and needs no ductwork.

Wall units (4,000 to 14,000 BTU/h) and 198 mm (7-13/16 in.) slim ducted units remain available for a room with no grid ceiling or a narrow corridor. The split between these families is decided at the visit, based on the partitions, the windows and the ceiling; we do not set it in advance.

With ten units, central control really comes into its own. The manufacturer offers a system controller, a touch panel controller and a central remote controller as options; installed at reception or in the manager's office, one of these devices brings the ten units together in one spot. Each office can also keep its local control, wired, wired touch or wireless, so the occupant can adjust the room without going through reception. Wi-Fi comes as an option.

On a floor where ten units work all week, maintenance is planned, preferably outside office hours. An AirGreen HVAC maintenance visit covers, among other things:

  • the filters of each air handler and each cassette, reached through the grille or an access panel;
  • the cassettes' built-in condensate pump and the air handlers' drains;
  • the indoor coils and the outdoor unit, cleared of snow and debris;
  • the air handlers' leak detection sensors, and the cassettes' sensors when the optional kit is installed.

The values for this 4-ton system are a SEER2 of 20.2, an HSPF2 of 10.2 and an EER2 of 11.4. Don't mix them up with the J-7S series peaks quoted in the documentation, which are range maxima: 15.7 for EER2, 22.2 for SEER2, 4.64 for COP2 and 11.3 for HSPF2. Power is 208/230 V, for an MCA of 36 A and an MOP of 40 A, and the main piping is 3/8 - 5/8 in.

An office building in Laval doesn't close in January. Per the brochure, heating holds down to −26 °C, with no low-temperature lockout, and the published tests for this system give 35,800 BTU at −8 °C and 41,500 BTU at −15 °C, with a COP of 2.1 measured at −15 °C; these are different test points, to be taken as they are. In summer, when sun on the windows and the computers push the heat up, cooling remains dependable up to 50 °C outdoors. The outdoor unit, at 37 × 12-5/8 × 39-5/16 in., offers 0.12 in. WC of static pressure and a built-in base pan heater; it sits on a pad or a bracket, with reduced minimum clearances.

The refrigerant piping for a full floor can extend over 120 m in total, an increase of 50% over the previous generation. As for the fluid, it is low-GWP R-32, with the charge capped at 6 kg (13.2 lb) for the whole circuit. On top of the air handlers' built-in sensors, two kits can be added on request: the first detects gas and sets off an audible and visual alarm, the second isolates the refrigerant with a shut-off valve that has its own backup power.

The outdoor unit carries AHRI number 216372783 on Hydro-Québec's list, and the system is listed by ENERGY STAR as a cold climate unit, ID 3813053. The LogisVert list of October 27, 2026 mentions it too, with a $4,296 grant; whether office premises qualify remains to be confirmed, which we check with you under the program's rules.

At the visit, we survey the partitions, the height of the grid ceiling, the existing ductwork and the possible location of the outdoor unit. That survey sets the type and capacity of each of the ten indoor units, without exceeding what the 48,000 BTU outdoor unit can supply. This system suits accounting firms, engineering firms, agencies and tenants of a full floor. If the floor expands, the AOUK048SSAN7 accepts up to 12 indoor units, as long as total capacity allows.
