GENERAL AIRSTAGE J-7S VRF Heat Pump, 48,000 BTU with 2 indoor units: two ducted multi-position air handlers for a store's sales floor and back room

The GENERAL AIRSTAGE J-7S VRF with 2 indoor units is the same machine as its Fujitsu AIRSTAGE J-7S twin: the 4-ton AOUK048SSAN7 outdoor unit, two J-7S indoor units, a shared manufacturer's brochure and the same 12-12-6 warranty (compressor, parts and labour, in years). Only the company name changed: Fujitsu General Limited swapped its corporate name for GENERAL Inc. on January 1, 2026.

This system is aimed at the store that lives in two climates under one roof. Up front, the sales floor: a display window in full sun, a door that opens with every customer, display lighting that gives off heat. Out back, the back room: storage, the receiving counter, sometimes a small workshop, and a delivery door that lets winter in. A single outdoor unit and two indoor units, each on its own duct network, answer that reality.

For a store, we generally recommend two multi-position air handlers, one per space, hidden above the ceiling or in a mechanical room. Customers only see grilles, shelving takes the walls, and each section keeps its own temperature. The final choice of the two units is still made on site, after the visit: depending on ceiling height and available space, a slim ducted unit may suit one of the two rooms.

GENERAL or Fujitsu AIRSTAGE: the same machine

The dates fit on two lines. August 2025: Paloma Rheem Holdings, to which Rheem has belonged since 1988, buys Fujitsu General. January 1, 2026: Fujitsu General Limited adopts the name GENERAL Inc. Nothing moves: head office and R&D in Kawasaki, Japan, the same production lines, and an AIRSTAGE range that keeps its model numbers as well as its warranty program. Since February 2026, Rheem Canada has handled Canadian sales, while Groupe Master remains AirGreen's distributor.

The Fujitsu name is fading from the boxes little by little; until the transition is over, your system may therefore arrive under either label. We thus leave both pages online, and our AIRSTAGE Elite Plus installer status applies to one as much as to the other.

The Fujitsu AIRSTAGE J-7S VRF 48,000 BTU page with 2 indoor units stays online, if you want to put the two side by side.

In a variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system like the J-7S, everything starts at the outdoor unit: it meters the refrigerant meant for each indoor unit, as the room's needs dictate. The range has four families: the multi-position air handler ARUX***KSA1 and the slim ducted ARUL***KSA1, which work on ducts, then the compact cassette AUUA***KSA1 and the wall-mounted ASUA***KSA1. These indoor units, like their accessories, work with no outdoor unit other than the J-7S. In a commercial space, the two ducted families are the most useful:

  • multi-position air handler: 12,000 to 60,000 BTU/h, S, M or L chassis, static pressure of 0.8 in. WC, 3 fan speeds, built-in leak detection sensor;
  • slim ducted: barely 198 mm (7-13/16 in.) high, 0.36 in. WC, 6 fan speeds and a built-in leak sensor as well, for a range of 4,000 to 18,000 BTU/h.

How the 48,000 BTU is split between front and back depends on your space: glazed area, how often the door opens, equipment that gives off heat. That calculation is done at the visit, never before. The sum of the two indoor units simply has to stay within what the outdoor unit accepts.

For the outdoor unit, two locations come up:

  • the flat roof, common in neighbourhood strip malls: the unit, 15% lighter and with a 16% smaller footprint than the previous generation, sits on a suitable stand once the roof has been examined;
  • the ground, behind the building, on a pad, away from the delivery area and from the snow pushed by plows.

Either way, we are talking about a 37 × 12.63 × 39.31 in. (W × D × H) unit, 998 mm high, with an outdoor sound level of 60.0 dB(A). It offers a static pressure of 0.12 in. WC, a 20% improvement according to the brochure, as well as reduced minimum clearances. Refrigerant piping can reach 120 m (393 ft) in total, 50% more than the previous generation, which leaves leeway between the roof and the two air handlers.

For this specific system: HSPF2 of 10.2, SEER2 of 20.2 and EER2 of 11.4, with a heating capacity of 35,800 BTU at −8 °C and 41,500 BTU at −15 °C, for a COP of 2.1 at that same −15 °C. Keep them separate from the maximums published for the whole J-7S series: COP2 up to 4.64, EER2 up to 15.7, HSPF2 up to 11.3 and SEER2 up to 22.2. AHRI number 216372783 is Hydro-Québec's reference for this outdoor unit; on the ENERGY STAR side, it is certified cold climate under ID 3813053.

Winter on the South Shore does not close a shop. The manufacturer states heating down to −26 °C with no low-temperature lockout, with a built-in base pan heater and electronics cooled by the refrigerant. And when the display window bakes in the July sun, the brochure states reliable cooling up to 50 °C outside.

The J-7S runs on R-32, whose global warming potential is low; the brochure states 12% less refrigerant than the older generation and caps the system charge at 6 kg (13.2 lb). Multi-position air handlers and slim ducted units each include their own leak sensor. Two optional kits can round it out: one adds a gas sensor that drives an audible and visual alarm, the other a refrigerant shut-off valve with its own backup power supply.

At installation, each air handler is connected to its own duct network, supply and return, new or existing after inspection. Refrigerant line, wiring and drain then run up to the outdoor unit, each air handler gets its access panel for the filter, and commissioning is entrusted to a refrigeration technician. Electrically, the outdoor unit needs 208/230 V, an MCA of 36 A and an MOP of 40 A; as for the duct layout and the number of grilles, they are decided at the visit.

For controls, one wired controller per section is enough for most stores: the sales-floor team sets theirs, the back-room team does the same. A wired touch controller or a wireless remote can replace it, Wi-Fi is available as an option, and the manager who wants to see everything from one station can add a central controller. Our HVAC service then takes care of system maintenance.

On the grant: Hydro-Québec's LogisVert list of October 27, 2026 assigns an amount of $4,296 to the AOUK048SSAN7. A commercial space is not necessarily eligible for the program; we check your situation before putting that amount in a quote. This system is mainly for shops with a stockroom, showrooms with a workshop, single-level retail stores and spaces that plan to add zones, since the outdoor unit accepts up to 12 indoor units within the limit of its capacity.
