GENERAL AIRSTAGE J-7S VRF 48,000 BTU with 4 indoor units for a restaurant: dining room, bar, closed kitchen and office, each with its own control, and cooling that holds up in a heat wave

This system combines the 4-ton AOUK048SSAN7 outdoor unit with 4 J-7S indoor units, and it is identical in every respect to its Fujitsu AIRSTAGE twin in the same configuration. Same manufacturer, called GENERAL Inc. since January 1, 2026, same manufacturer's brochure, same 12-12-6 warranty on the compressor, parts and labour.

A restaurant does not have one climate, it has four. The dining room fills up at dinnertime and warms up with the customers. The bar lives with its refrigerators, which reject their heat into the room. The closed kitchen takes the heat of the ranges. The manager's small office, for its part, stays cold in winter if nobody thinks about it. A single-zone central heat pump runs the whole restaurant off one thermostat; with a variable refrigerant flow Heat Pump system, each room has its own control and gets the refrigerant flow that suits it.

On most restaurant projects, we first think of compact cassettes in the suspended ceiling of the dining room and the bar, and of a slim ducted unit wherever a closed ceiling or a bulkhead can hide it. The exact split among these four zones is decided on site.

GENERAL or Fujitsu AIRSTAGE: the same machine

The best sign that nothing changed is the model numbers: the outdoor unit carries the same AOUK048SSAN7 reference under both brands, and so do the J-7S indoor units. Fujitsu General Limited, acquired in August 2025 by Paloma Rheem Holdings (owner of Rheem since 1988), became GENERAL Inc. on January 1, 2026. Kawasaki, Japan, remains the address of the head office and the R&D centre; factories and warranty program do not change.

Rheem Canada has run Canadian sales since February 2026, and our orders still go through Groupe Master. As the Fujitsu brand is gradually fading out, the same machine circulates under both names, and we keep both pages online so you can compare with full knowledge. AirGreen holds AIRSTAGE Elite Plus installer status.

Under the Fujitsu label, the same configuration is here: Fujitsu AIRSTAGE J-7S VRF 48,000 BTU with 4 indoor units.

The J-7S principle fits in two lines: one outdoor unit, several indoor units chosen one by one, and a refrigerant flow that follows each room's demand. Four families are available, all exclusive to J-7S outdoor units: compact cassette AUUA***KSA1, slim ducted ARUL***KSA1, wall-mounted ASUA***KSA1 and multi-position air handler ARUX***KSA1. For a restaurant, two of them do most of the work:

  • the compact cassette AUUA***KSA1, from 4,000 to 18,000 BTU/h, fits the format of a standard suspended ceiling, offers 6 fan speeds and includes a condensate drain pump, useful when the drain has to rise before finding an outlet;
  • the slim ducted ARUL***KSA1, from 4,000 to 18,000 BTU/h, is only 198 mm (7-13/16 in.) high, offers 0.36 in. WC of static pressure and 6 fan speeds, and shows nothing but its grilles.

A frank word about the kitchen. The hood and the make-up air belong to another system, which the J-7S does not replace. What we install is for the staff's comfort, and the kitchen's indoor unit is placed away from the cooking line and grease vapours. Since the four units share the same outdoor unit, we also look with you, at the visit, at how the system will behave in the shoulder seasons, when the kitchen will want cool air while the dining room is still asking for heat.

Because the sum of the four indoor units has to stay within what the outdoor unit accepts, we offer no ready-made combination. The calculation takes into account seating, equipment and windows.

Summer is a restaurant's real test. The manufacturer states reliable cooling up to an outdoor temperature of 50 °C, versus 46 °C for the previous generation. That is a welcome margin when the outdoor unit sits on a gravel roof or in a lane between two brick walls, where the air is often hotter than the forecast says. We also avoid placing it in the discharge of the hood exhaust fan.

This system's figures: SEER2 of 20.2, EER2 of 11.4, HSPF2 of 10.2. In heating, 35,800 BTU at −8 °C, 41,500 BTU at −15 °C, COP of 2.1 at −15 °C, and heating stated down to −26 °C with no low-temperature lockout, backed by a built-in base pan heater. For the J-7S series, the brochure gives higher maximums: HSPF2 up to 11.3, EER2 up to 15.7, SEER2 up to 22.2 and COP2 up to 4.64, which are not the values of this configuration. ENERGY STAR cold climate certification, ID 3813053; AHRI number 216372783 on the Hydro-Québec list.

Size-wise, the outdoor unit is 37 × 12.63 × 39.31 in. (W × D × H) for 998 mm in height, with weight reduced by 15% compared with the previous generation and reduced minimum clearances; its electronics are cooled by the refrigerant. Its outdoor sound level of 60.0 dB(A) matters when a terrace or neighbours are close by. Refrigerant piping can total 120 m (393 ft), enough to reach the back office from the roof.

On safety, the refrigerant is R-32: low global warming potential, 12% less charge than the previous generation and no more than 6 kg (13.2 lb) in the whole system. The slim ducted unit has its built-in leak detection sensor, and the cassettes accept an optional leak sensor kit. For a room open to the public, we recommend also looking at two options: the gas sensor with audible and visual alarm, and the refrigerant shut-off valve with backup power, each offered as a kit.

On site, each unit is tied to the outdoor unit by a refrigerant line, a cable and a drain, then the slim ducted unit is connected to its supply and return ducts. Access panels, the route through the ceiling and commissioning by a refrigeration technician are planned with you, taking your opening hours into account. As for power, the outdoor unit connects at 208/230 V; its spec sheet shows an MCA of 36 A and an MOP of 40 A.

Each zone can have its own wired controller or wired touch controller; you can also choose the wireless remote, and add Wi-Fi as an option. The manager who wants to shut off the dining room, bar and kitchen in one move at closing time can add a central remote controller or a touch panel controller. The cassette filters are reached from the dining room, and our HVAC team handles system maintenance.

Finally, the grant: $4,296 for the AOUK048SSAN7, according to Hydro-Québec's LogisVert list of October 27, 2026. A restaurant's eligibility depends on the program rules; we check it before counting on it. This system suits neighbourhood restaurants, bistros with a bar, cafés with a closed kitchen and caterers with a small dining room.
