GENERAL AIRSTAGE J-7S VRF Heat Pump 48,000 BTU, 5 indoor units: a veterinary clinic or professional office on one floor, with leak detection and an optional shut-off valve
The GENERAL AIRSTAGE J-7S VRF with 5 indoor units and its Fujitsu AIRSTAGE twin are one and the same machine: the 4-ton AOUK048SSAN7 outdoor unit, five indoor units from the J-7S range, the same manufacturer's brochure and an identical warranty (compressor 12 years, parts 12 years, labour 6 years). Only the manufacturer's label differs: it has carried the GENERAL Inc. name since January 1, 2026.
This configuration suits a single-storey professional space well. Take a veterinary clinic: a waiting room where dogs and cats cross paths, exam rooms, a surgery room, a hospitalization room where animals sometimes spend the night. Or a professional office, with its reception, its closed offices and its meeting room. In both cases, five rooms with different needs, and nobody wanting to fight over a shared thermostat.
In a place like this, one question comes up quickly: refrigerant safety. The J-7S answers it with a leak detection sensor built into the ducted units and with kits offered as options, including a refrigerant shut-off valve kit.
GENERAL or Fujitsu AIRSTAGE: the same machine
Our supply has not moved: Groupe Master remains AirGreen's distributor, and Rheem Canada has handled Canadian sales since February 2026. Upstream, Fujitsu General came under the control of Paloma Rheem Holdings, owner of Rheem since 1988, in August 2025, before being renamed GENERAL Inc. on January 1, 2026. Kawasaki, Japan, keeps the head office and the R&D centre, manufacturing stays in the same factories, and AIRSTAGE products have lost neither their model numbers nor their warranty program.
Until the Fujitsu logo has completely left the packaging, the same machine is sold under both names. So we publish two pages for a single product; as an AIRSTAGE Elite Plus installer, we install one exactly like the other.

With the J-7S, we are talking variable refrigerant flow: one outdoor unit feeds several indoor units, and each one receives the refrigerant its room needs. The indoor units, compatible only with J-7S outdoor units, are chosen room by room from four families:
- compact cassette AUUA***KSA1, the natural candidate for the waiting room and exam rooms of a commercial space: it fits a standard suspended ceiling, covers 4,000 to 18,000 BTU/h and includes its own condensate drain pump;
- slim ducted ARUL***KSA1 (4,000 to 18,000 BTU/h), 198 mm high, for rooms where you would rather see only grilles, such as the surgery room or a director's office;
- wall-mounted ASUA***KSA1, when the ceiling allows nothing else: from 4,000 to 14,000 BTU/h, and as low as 22 dB(A) in quiet mode;
- multi-position air handler ARUX***KSA1 (12,000 to 60,000 BTU/h), if a large open area has to be served by ducts.
The mix chosen for your five zones is decided at the visit, as is the capacity of each unit: their sum has to stay within what the outdoor unit accepts, and we set no combination in advance.
Here, then, is what the J-7S offers for refrigerant safety, without exaggeration:
- a refrigerant, R-32, with a low global warming potential: 12% less refrigerant than in the previous generation, and 6 kg (13.2 lb) of charge at most for the system;
- the slim ducted unit and the multi-position air handler come with a built-in leak detection sensor;
- the wall-mounted unit and the compact cassette, for their part, get that sensor on request, as an optional kit;
- a gas sensor kit with audible and visual alarm can be added, so the staff are alerted on site;
- a refrigerant shut-off valve kit with backup power is also available as an option.
These options are discussed case by case. In a hospitalization room where animals stay alone after closing, we always bring them up; in an ordinary office, the choice is yours once the options are explained. Let us also be clear that the J-7S heats and cools, but it does not replace ventilation: odour exhaust and fresh-air supply in a clinic belong to other equipment.
The system is rated 20.2 for SEER2 and 10.2 for HSPF2, plus 11.4 for EER2; in heating, it delivers 35,800 BTU at −8 °C and 41,500 BTU at −15 °C, a temperature at which its COP is 2.1. In the J-7S series, the best published ratings reach 22.2 for SEER2 and 11.3 for HSPF2, then 15.7 for EER2 and 4.64 for COP2; those maximums do not describe this particular configuration. On Hydro-Québec's list, the outdoor unit carries AHRI number 216372783; it also carries ENERGY STAR cold climate certification, ID 3813053.
In the dead of winter, the hospitalization room has to stay warm. According to the manufacturer, heating holds down to −26 °C with no low-temperature lockout, and the outdoor unit is fitted with a factory base pan heater as well as electronics that the refrigerant keeps cool. As for cooling, the brochure calls it reliable up to 50 °C outside.
As for the 37 × 12.63 × 39.31 in. (W × D × H) unit, 998 mm high, it sits on a pad or a stand behind the building or on the roof, depending on what the visit allows. It weighs 15% less than the previous generation and takes up 16% less space; its outdoor sound level is 60.0 dB(A). Total piping can reach 120 m (393 ft), enough to reach the five rooms of a spread-out floor.
At installation, each indoor unit gets its refrigerant line, cable and drain; the ducted units connect to their supply and return ducts, and access panels are provided for the filters. A refrigeration technician finishes with the commissioning. For power, count on 208/230 V at the outdoor unit, whose MCA is 36 A and MOP 40 A; the piping layout, for its part, is set at the visit, based on the partitions and the ceiling.
In each room, a wired controller, its touch version or a wireless remote; Wi-Fi is available on top, as an option. At reception, a system controller or a touch panel controller lets you see and adjust all five units from one station. We handle system maintenance, filters included, at the frequency that suits a space where animal hair circulates.
On the grant side, Hydro-Québec's LogisVert list of October 27, 2026 shows $4,296 for the AOUK048SSAN7; the eligibility of a professional space does, however, depend on the program rules, and we check it with you. This system is meant for veterinary clinics, professional practices, insurance or accounting offices, and any single-storey space of about five rooms that the owner wants to entrust to our HVAC team.
