GENERAL AIRSTAGE J-7S VRF 48,000 BTU with 7 indoor units: seven teaching rooms, one R-32 outdoor unit

Seven rooms, seven groups that don't show up at the same time, and one outdoor unit to serve them all: that is the private school or training centre this system is aimed at. The GENERAL AIRSTAGE J-7S VRF 48,000 BTU with 7 indoor units is, identically, the machine you may know under the Fujitsu AIRSTAGE name: same AOUK048SSAN7 outdoor unit, same number of indoor units, same manufacturer. That manufacturer has been called GENERAL Inc. since January 1, 2026. The technical brochure doesn't change, and neither does the warranty: compressor and parts covered for 12 years, labour for 6.

In a school, the refrigerant is not a line you skim at the bottom of a spec sheet. The J-7S runs on R-32, whose global warming potential (GWP) is low, and the manufacturer took out 12% compared with the previous generation; the system charge tops out at 6 kg (13.2 lb). Add factory leak sensors on some units and optional safety kits, and a principal has what it takes to reassure the board of directors.

GENERAL or Fujitsu AIRSTAGE: the same machine

The purchase of Fujitsu General by Paloma Rheem Holdings, the group behind Rheem since 1988, closed in August 2025. On January 1, 2026, the corporate name Fujitsu General Limited gave way to GENERAL Inc., with no move and no change of factory: head office and R&D still in Kawasaki, Japan, AIRSTAGE model numbers unchanged, warranty program kept as is. On the Canadian side, sales have been Rheem Canada's job since February 2026, while our supply still comes through Groupe Master.

The Fujitsu logo is gradually disappearing from the boxes. During the transition, the same AOUK048SSAN7 can therefore carry either brand on delivery, and a tender or a competing quote can name either one. We keep both pages online, which makes the comparison instant; as an HVAC contractor and AIRSTAGE Elite Plus installer, we install both the same way.

Product pageThis pageFujitsu AIRSTAGE J-7S 7-zone 48,000 BTU

The Fujitsu version of this system is waiting for you on the Fujitsu AIRSTAGE J-7S VRF 48,000 BTU page with 7 indoor units.

The idea behind a variable refrigerant flow (VRF) Heat Pump is easy to grasp in a school. A single outdoor unit meters the refrigerant it sends to each indoor unit according to what each room is asking for: a full classroom on a June afternoon and the principal's office, empty during recess, don't get the same thing. Each room thus becomes one of its zones, with its own setpoint. The seven indoor units are chosen one by one at the visit, from four families reserved for J-7S outdoor units; the page sets no combination in advance, because a lab and a music room don't have the same needs.

Here is how we reason through the choice for teaching spaces:

  • Compact cassette: the AUUA***KSA1 fits in place of a standard grid ceiling tile, with a range of 4,000 to 18,000 BTU/h, and its built-in condensate pump saves you from hunting for a slope to the drain.
  • Slim ducted: at 198 mm (7-13/16 in.) high, the ARUL***KSA1 hides above a corridor, offers 4,000 to 18,000 BTU/h, blows through grilles and comes with a built-in leak detection sensor.
  • Multi-position air handler: for the multipurpose room connected to ductwork, the ARUX***KSA1 ranges from 12,000 to 60,000 BTU/h, with 0.8 in. WC of static pressure and, here too, a built-in leak sensor.
  • Wall mounted: the ASUA***KSA1, from 4,000 to 14,000 BTU/h, is the simple answer for an office or a tutoring room, mounted high, out of reach of curious hands, and as quiet as 22 dB(A) in quiet mode.

On refrigerant safety, we go through the J-7S brochure room by room with the administration. Cassettes and wall units can take a leak sensor supplied as an optional kit. Two accessories can round things out: a gas sensor kit with audible and visual alarm, which warns the occupants, and a refrigerant shut-off valve kit with backup power, which isolates the circuit. Whether to add these kits depends on each room; we put it in black and white in the quote instead of improvising on site.

On efficiency, this 4-ton system delivers a SEER2 of 20.2, an HSPF2 of 10.2 and an EER2 of 11.4. The J-7S series goes higher on paper: SEER2 and HSPF2 climb to 22.2 and 11.3, EER2 to 15.7 and COP2 to 4.64, but those are the maxima of the range, not of this configuration. Hydro-Québec lists the outdoor unit under AHRI number 216372783, and the system carries the ENERGY STAR cold climate designation (ID 3813053).

Winter in the West Island doesn't faze this machine. The brochure reports heating down to −26 °C, with no low-temperature lockout. The system's spec sheet shows 35,800 BTU of heating at −8 °C and 41,500 BTU at −15 °C, with a COP of 2.1 at −15 °C; these are two separate test points, to be read as they are. In summer, cooling stays reliable up to 50 °C outdoors according to the manufacturer, versus 46 °C for the previous generation, enough to stay on course through summer classes and day camps.

At the visit, our refrigeration technician walks through the seven rooms. The technician maps out where the refrigerant piping will run (120 m of total length at most, 50% more than the previous generation), then the location of the drains, the electrical panel and the outdoor unit's base. At 998 mm (39-5/16 in.) tall, with reduced minimum clearances, the outdoor unit tucks along a wall without crowding an exit. It runs on 208/230 V and lists an MCA of 36 A for an MOP of 40 A. That is when the type and capacity of each indoor unit are settled, so that their total respects the 48,000 BTU outdoor unit.

For control, each room gets its choice of a wireless remote controller, a wired touch remote controller or a plain wired remote controller. In a classroom, the wired controller has one big advantage: it stays on the wall instead of vanishing into a desk. At the front office, a touch panel controller, a central remote controller or a system controller, all optional, bring the seven units together in one place. Wi-Fi can be added as an option too.

Maintenance follows the school calendar, not the other way around: we schedule the cleaning of filters, coils and drains during breaks, when the rooms are empty, and check the installed sensors and kits on the same visit. On the funding side, this system appears on Hydro-Québec's LogisVert list of October 27, 2026 with a $4,296 grant; your building's eligibility is confirmed under the program's rules before you count on that amount.

This system is meant for the neighbourhood private school, the vocational training centre or the language school that would rather have one machine to maintain and one warranty to track. It even leaves room to grow: the AOUK048SSAN7 accepts up to 12 indoor units, if total capacity allows.
