GENERAL AIRSTAGE J-7S VRF 48,000 BTU with 9 indoor units: one unit per bedroom and for the common areas, under one roof

The grandparents on the ground floor, a young couple upstairs, teenagers in the basement, or roomers sharing a kitchen: in that kind of house, a single temperature setting suits nobody. The GENERAL AIRSTAGE J-7S VRF 48,000 BTU with 9 indoor units answers with nine units to spread between the bedrooms and the common areas, all connected to a single outdoor unit.

This system is the twin Fujitsu AIRSTAGE, with no technical difference at all: the same AOUK048SSAN7 outdoor unit, the same number of indoor units, the same manufacturer, which has been called GENERAL Inc. since January 1, 2026. Both brands share the manufacturer's brochure, as they share the warranty: 12 years compressor, 12 years parts, 6 years labour.

What sets this project apart from an ordinary heat pump is the path. Nine indoor units mean nine refrigerant lines to run through an occupied house, between the joists, through the closets, under the attic. That route is not improvised: it is drawn at the visit, with you.

GENERAL or Fujitsu AIRSTAGE: the same machine

A transaction explains the change: Paloma Rheem Holdings, the holder of Rheem since 1988, completed the acquisition of Fujitsu General in August 2025. A few months later, on January 1, 2026, the corporate name went from Fujitsu General Limited to GENERAL Inc. The Kawasaki head office, the R&D centre, the factories, the AIRSTAGE products and their model numbers all stayed the same, as did the warranty program.

The Fujitsu name is gradually disappearing from the units, so during the transition the same machine circulates under both labels. Showing both pages side by side avoids any confusion for the owner who received a quote under the Fujitsu name. Rheem Canada has handled sales across the country since February 2026, while Groupe Master keeps supplying us, and AirGreen, an HVAC contractor, remains an AIRSTAGE Elite Plus installer.

The twin page, under the Fujitsu name, is here: Fujitsu AIRSTAGE J-7S VRF 48,000 BTU, 9 indoor units.

The J-7S is part of the family of variable refrigerant flow Heat Pumps. Its outdoor unit adjusts the refrigerant sent to each indoor unit, so grandma's bedroom can be heating while the basement office sits idle. Each room becomes one of its zones, with its own control. The nine units are chosen room by room from the four J-7S families, which are only compatible with outdoor units from this series.

In a shared house, these are the options we put on the table:

  • the wall unit (4,000 to 14,000 BTU/h) for most bedrooms: mounted high and as quiet as 22 dB(A) in quiet mode, it fades away at bedtime;
  • the slim ducted unit (4,000 to 18,000 BTU/h), whose casing is only 198 mm (7-13/16 in.) high, for the bedroom where nobody wants to see anything on the wall: it hides in a bulkhead or above a closet and blows through a grille;
  • the multi-position air handler (S, M or L chassis, 12,000 to 60,000 BTU/h) for the common areas, if a duct network already exists in the basement and checking it at the visit allows it;
  • the compact cassette (4,000 to 18,000 BTU/h) for a finished basement with a standard grid ceiling, with its built-in condensate pump.

The refrigerant piping route is planned at the visit, in this order:

  1. the location of the outdoor unit, on a pad or a bracket; its 998 mm (39-5/16 in.) height and reduced minimum clearances let it sit below a window;
  2. the main run, in 3/8 - 5/8 in., toward the heart of the house, through the basement, a utility wall or the attic;
  3. the connections to each bedroom and each common area, along with the drain for each indoor unit;
  4. the total of the lengths, which must stay under the manufacturer's limit of 120 m (393 ft) of piping, a limit 50% more generous than the previous generation's.

An occupied house sets its own rules. You avoid opening a freshly painted ceiling, you go through a closet rather than the living room, you group the openings together. We show the proposed route to the occupants concerned before drilling the first hole, and the choice of each indoor unit follows that route, so that the whole stays within the outdoor unit's 48,000 BTU.

For this system, the manufacturer publishes a SEER2 of 20.2, an HSPF2 of 10.2 and an EER2 of 11.4. You will see higher figures elsewhere for the J-7S series, namely 4.64 COP2, 15.7 EER2, 11.3 HSPF2 and 22.2 SEER2: those are series maxima, reached by other combinations. In cold weather, the spec sheet shows a COP of 2.1 at −15 °C and two capacities, 35,800 BTU at −8 °C and 41,500 BTU at −15 °C, different test points that are each read on their own.

According to the brochure cover, heating continues down to −26 °C, with no low-temperature lockout. In a house where seniors live, that is often the deciding argument. The outdoor unit is fitted with a built-in base pan heater and refrigerant-cooled electronics, and the manufacturer rates cooling as reliable up to 50 °C outdoors, where the previous generation was rated to 46 °C.

Each occupant keeps control of their own room: wireless remote controller, wired remote controller or wired touch remote controller, as preferred. In a rooming house, the wired controller has the advantage of staying in the room when the tenant changes. To follow the whole house at a glance, the owner can install an optional touch panel controller or central remote controller in the entrance or the office. Wi-Fi is also available as an option.

When people sleep in every room, refrigerant safety belongs in the discussion. We are talking about R-32 here, a low global warming potential refrigerant whose quantity has dropped by 12% since the previous generation; the maximum system charge is 6 kg (13.2 lb). Slim ducted units and multi-position air handlers have a built-in leak detection sensor; wall units and cassettes accept one as an optional kit, and the installation can be rounded out with a gas sensor kit and its audible and visual alarm.

On the electrical side, the outdoor unit requires 208/230 V; its MCA is 36 A and its MOP 40 A, and we check the panel's capacity at the visit. Certified ENERGY STAR cold climate under ID 3813053, the system has its outdoor unit on Hydro-Québec's list under AHRI number 216372783, and the LogisVert list of October 27, 2026 grants it a $4,296 subsidy. What remains is to confirm, with you, that your house meets the program's rules.

Maintenance is done room by room, with notice to the occupants: filters, drains and coils first, the outdoor unit next. This system is for families living three generations under one roof, owners of rooming houses and any large house where nine rooms each need their own setting. The AOUK048SSAN7 can take up to 12 indoor units, provided total capacity keeps up.
