A particularly appealing 9,000 BTU mini split when efficiency, quiet operation, and modulation matter more than size
In a bedroom, office, small condo, studio, or enclosed room, installing an oversized heat pump can be just as problematic as installing an undersized unit. This is precisely the type of project in which the SENVILLE 9,000 BTU 220 V, consisting of the SENA-09HF-OG outdoor unit and the SENA-09HF-IGG indoor unit, becomes appealing.
At AirGreen, when we evaluate a mini split installation in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the South Shore or the North Shore, we never stop at the 9,000 BTU figure. We primarily examine the minimum modulation capacity, the room configuration, heat losses, airflow, the desired noise level, and how the unit will perform during long periods of heating or cooling.
The model shown on our AirGreen listing is associated with AHRI 215735295, R-454B refrigerant, a 220 V power supply, WiFi included, as well as ENERGY STAR and ENERGY STAR Cold Climate certifications.
However, one technical clarification is warranted: the Senville documentation provided for the SENA-09HF presents the product under the name AURA Series, whereas our commercial page uses the name LETO. For the detailed specifications below, we therefore rely primarily on the model numbers and the technical data corresponding to the SENA-09HF, rather than on the series name alone. In the brochure, the product is identified as a 9,000 BTU heat pump mini split, ENERGY STAR certified and designed for heating and cooling.
Why 9,000 BTU may be preferable to 12,000 BTU
In several residential projects we encounter, the initial instinct is to ask for a larger unit “to be sure.”
This is not always the right approach.
The Senville brochure recommends the SENA-09HF for spaces of approximately 100 to 450 sq. ft., including small rooms and studios.
This area remains a general guideline, not an absolute rule. A 350 sq. ft. bedroom on the top floor of an older building in Montreal may have greater needs than a similar space located in the center of a newer condo in Laval.
We consider, in particular:
- the quality of the insulation;
- the number and size of the windows;
- sun exposure;
- the number of exterior walls;
- the floor on which the room is located;
- the ceiling height;
- the circulation between the different zones;
- actual heating needs in winter.
The minimum capacity is particularly important in a small space.
According to the documentation, the system can modulate in cooling mode from approximately 3,000 to 10,500 BTU/h, and in heating mode from approximately 3,100 to 11,000 BTU/h.
This allows the compressor to slow down when demand is low instead of operating at full capacity all the time.
In a small office or bedroom, this modulation can contribute to a more stable temperature and longer operating cycles, which is generally preferable to an oversized unit that starts and stops frequently.
High seasonal efficiency: SEER2 27.4
One of the figures that distinguishes this model is its SEER2 of 27.4.
The brochure also states:
- EER2: 14.5
- HSPF2 Region 4: 13.9
- HSPF2 Region 5: 9.8
- COP: 3.55
These values appear in the official SENA-09HF technical table.
The SEER2 is used to compare seasonal cooling efficiency. The higher it is, the less electricity the unit generally needs to produce a given amount of cooling under the standardized conditions used for certification.
The HSPF2 relates more specifically to seasonal heating efficiency.
For homeowners in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, Boucherville, Terrebonne, and the North Shore, this second figure is particularly important, since a wall-mounted heat pump often operates much longer in heating mode than in cooling mode over the course of a full year.
9,000 BTU for cooling, but a different heating capacity
The rated cooling capacity is 9,000 BTU/h.
However, the manufacturer's documentation indicates a rated heating capacity of 9,800 BTU/h, with a modulating range of 3,100 to 11,000 BTU/h under the reference conditions used for the technical specifications.
On the AirGreen product page for the SENA-09HF-OG / SENA-09HF-IGG units, we also have the following heating data:
- 12,000 BTU at -8 °C
- 11,500 BTU at -15 °C
- 5,100 BTU at -30 °C
These figures illustrate an important reality that we regularly discuss with our customers: a heat pump can continue operating in extremely cold weather without retaining its maximum capacity.
At -30 °C, a rated capacity of 5,100 BTU represents actual heat output, but it may be insufficient on its own to cover the heat loss of a room or home during a cold snap.
That is why we avoid presenting the statement “heating down to -30 °C” as if it meant “full capacity at -30 °C.”
The Senville brochure does indeed confirm a minimum outdoor heating temperature of -30 °C.
Why this distinction matters in Montreal’s climate
Let’s take a typical example: a 400 sq. ft. room in a newer condo in Laval and a room of the same size on the top floor of a 1950s Montreal duplex.
The floor area is identical.
The heating load can nevertheless be very different.
In the second case, heat losses through the walls, roof, and windows can be significantly higher. When the outdoor temperature drops below -20 °C, this difference becomes important.
Our role is therefore to determine whether the 9,000 BTU SENVILLE can cover most of the demand or whether supplemental heating should remain available.
This is especially important for a heat pump installed in a bedroom, office, or home where the existing electric heating remains in place.
A unit designed for spaces where silence matters
Noise is often secondary when comparing specification sheets. In practice, it quickly becomes a priority when an indoor unit is installed a few metres from a bed or workstation.
The SENA-09HF documentation indicates the following sound levels for the indoor unit:
- 45 dB(A) in Turbo mode
- 37 dB(A) at high speed
- 31 dB(A) at medium speed
- 23 dB(A) at low speed
The corresponding airflow ranges from:
- 425 CFM in Turbo mode
- 340 CFM at high speed
- 260 CFM at medium speed
- 200 CFM at low speed
These figures are particularly relevant for a wall-mounted heat pump for a bedroom, small living room, or office.
At low speed, the 23 dB(A) level is one of the most appealing technical features of this format.
The outdoor unit’s sound level is listed at 56 dB(A).
Even for an installation on a balcony or near a bedroom, we pay particular attention to the condenser’s placement, vibrations, and the structure to which it is attached.
Compact dimensions, but they should be verified before installation
Senville documentation indicates the following for the indoor unit:
33.40 in × 9.18 in × 11.76 in
and weighs approximately 22.05 lb.
The outdoor unit measures:
28.74 in × 11.02 in × 19.49 in
and weighs approximately 66.14 lb.
The sheet currently published by AirGreen shows a different indoor dimension, namely 28.43 × 7.36 × 11.42 in, as well as an outdoor dimension of 30.12 × 11.93 × 21.85 in.
Since these measurements do not correspond exactly to the supplied brochure, the final dimensions must be confirmed on the technical sheet corresponding precisely to the delivered SENA-09HF-OG and SENA-09HF-IGG units before preparing clearance or an opening to the nearest millimeter.
This is exactly the type of detail we check before an installation when available space is limited.
Automatic horizontal and vertical louvers
The AirGreen listing states:
- vertical louver: automatic
- horizontal louver: automatic
This feature is important on a low-capacity unit intended to cover a specific room.
Good airflow can help distribute heating or cooling more evenly, particularly in a rectangular living room or a space with a work area far from the unit.
However, motorized louvers cannot correct a poor location.
Installing the evaporator above a large cabinet, directly facing a nearby partition, or in a corner where air remains trapped reduces distribution quality.
WiFi and Alexa control
WiFi is included in the configuration presented by AirGreen.
Senville documentation also mentions the Alexa-compatible smart control, as well as control through an app that allows users to adjust the temperature and create schedules, among other functions.
For a homeowner who uses the heat pump as the main source of heating for a room, scheduling can be especially convenient.
For example, in an office used from Monday to Friday, operating periods can be adjusted rather than leaving the same setting in place 24 hours a day.
Built-in diagnostics and leak detection
The manufacturer's documentation also mentions a self-diagnostic and leak-detection system designed to facilitate the identification of certain issues.
This feature obviously does not replace a diagnosis performed by a refrigeration technician when a problem occurs.
A drop in performance can have many causes:
- a clogged filter;
- a dirty heat exchanger;
- a drainage problem;
- restricted airflow;
- an electrical fault;
- a communication problem;
- an inadequate amount of refrigerant;
- an actual leak in the refrigeration circuit.
An error code is therefore a starting point for HVAC maintenance or a service call, not a complete diagnosis on its own.
R-454B refrigerant and 1/4 in – 3/8 in lines
This generation uses R-454B refrigerant.
The AirGreen specification sheet indicates piping of:
1/4 in – 3/8 in
The brochure specifies a refrigerant charge of 37.15 oz and a factory charge intended for 25 feet of piping.
The manufacturer also indicates that a 50-foot line set requires additional refrigerant to be added on-site by the installer.
For us, this detail is important.
In a simple installation, the indoor unit is sometimes directly on the other side of the wall from the condenser. But in a condo, duplex, or row house, the route can become much longer.
We must then take into account:
- the actual piping length;
- changes in elevation;
- the outdoor route;
- mechanical protection;
- future access for servicing;
- the manufacturer's load specifications.
220 V power supply: pay attention to MCA and MOP values
The AirGreen listing states:
- Voltage: 220 V
- MCA: 12 A
- MOP: 15 A
The Senville brochure gives the following for the SENA-09HF:
- 208/230 V, 1 phase, 60 Hz
- voltage range: 187 to 253 V
- Minimum Circuit Ampacity: 10 A
- maximum fuse: 15 A
- connection wiring: 14/4 AWG.
Here again, we observe a difference between the MCA value of 12 A shown on the AirGreen specification sheet and the value of 10 A in the supplied brochure.
For an electrical installation, we never choose the protection based on an approximate value found on a commercial page. We check the nameplate of the equipment delivered and the documentation applicable to the exact model number.
The maximum protection of 15 A is consistent between the two sources.
What we check at AirGreen before installing this SENVILLE 9,000 BTU
A successful installation starts with the right location
During our work in Montréal, Laval, Longueuil, on the South Shore and the North Shore, we regularly encounter homes where the owner knows exactly which room they want a heat pump in, but not necessarily which wall.
This decision strongly influences the outcome.
For a 9,000 BTU unit, we look for a location that allows:
- an unobstructed air discharge;
- good airflow in the occupied area;
- a logical condensate drain;
- a reasonable refrigeration line route;
- proper accessibility for future cleaning;
- an outdoor location suitable for snow and defrosting.
Drainage is just as important as the refrigeration circuit
In air conditioning and dehumidification, the evaporator produces water.
The brochure indicates a moisture removal capacity of 1.0 L/h.
This water must be drained properly.
An improperly positioned drain or insufficient slope can lead to problems unrelated to compressor quality: drainage noise, water accumulation, indoor leaks, or more difficult maintenance.
When gravity drainage is not possible, we sometimes need to plan a different solution, notably a condensate pump suited to the project.
The outdoor support must be designed for Quebec winters.
An outdoor unit should not be installed like a simple air conditioner intended to operate only in July.
A wall-mounted heat pump used for heating produces water during defrost cycles.
We therefore take into account:
- height above the ground;
- snow accumulation;
- winter drainage;
- proximity to an entrance or walkway;
- vibrations;
- access for maintenance.
On the South Shore or the North Shore, a unit installed too low may become surrounded by snow during a major storm. On a Montreal balcony, the available space and the drainage of defrost water sometimes determine the configuration.
Maintenance of a 9,000 BTU unit should not be neglected because the appliance is small.
The performance of a heat pump depends directly on airflow.
Dust-laden filters progressively restrict airflow. A dirty coil or blower wheel can also reduce performance and increase noise.
We therefore recommend:
- clean the filters regularly;
- monitor the condition of the indoor coil;
- keep the outdoor unit clear;
- check that no excessive snow or ice is blocking the condenser;
- have a professional HVAC maintenance service performed when the unit shows reduced performance, a persistent odor, or unusual noise levels.
What warranty applies?
The AirGreen listing states:
10 years compressor – 10 years parts – 0 years labor, with the possibility of an additional warranty.
The Senville documentation provided, for its part, indicates 10 years on the compressor and 5 years on parts.
The brochure also specifies that professional installation is required to maintain warranty coverage.
Since the conditions may depend on registration, the sales channel, and the applicable program, we confirm the exact terms associated with the equipment sold at the time of quotation.
What about the LogisVert rebate?
The AirGreen listing includes a LogisVert Provincial Rebate section, but no amount is currently specified for this configuration.
We prefer not to announce an unconfirmed amount.
Eligibility for rebate programs depends on the exact model, applicable certifications, and the rules in effect at the time of installation. Before basing a purchase decision on financial assistance, we therefore recommend verifying the current eligibility of the SENA-09HF-OG / SENA-09HF-IGG.
For which projects would we choose this format?
The SENVILLE 9,000 BTU is particularly suitable when we need to condition a limited area without installing an oversized unit.
For example:
- a primary bedroom;
- a small condo;
- a studio;
- a home office;
- an enclosed family room;
- a residential extension;
- a small commercial space;
- a problem room located far from the central system.
In a highly compartmentalized home, however, we must be realistic. A single wall-mounted unit cannot effectively distribute its heat behind several closed doors.
In this type of situation, we may recommend a different location, multiple units, or another HVAC system configuration.
Who is this model less suitable for?
We would be cautious about this 9,000 BTU model for:
- a large open area with high heat loss;
- several enclosed rooms that must be maintained at the same temperature;
- a space where the actual load significantly exceeds the available capacity;
- a project where heating at very low temperatures must cover 100% of the heat loss without any backup heat source.
At -30 °C, the AirGreen specifications indicate a maximum capacity of 5,100 BTU. This figure must therefore be considered in any serious heating analysis.
Our assessment of the SENVILLE 9,000 BTU
What stands out to us is not only its rated capacity.
It is mainly the combination of several features:
- SEER2 of 27.4
- HSPF2 Region 5 of 9.8
- cooling modulation down to approximately 3,000 BTU/h
- heating operation specified down to -30 °C
- indoor sound level as low as 23 dB(A)
- Wi-Fi
- Alexa-compatible control according to the brochure;

For a properly sized small area, this combination can produce a very different result from a heat pump chosen simply because it is “big enough.”
