A 115 V wall-mounted heat pump distinguished primarily by its modulation, efficiency, and ease of integration

The YORK X Series 23 SEER Mini Split | 12,000 BTU 115V meets a fairly specific need in the residential HVAC market: obtaining a 12,000 BTU inverter wall-mounted heat pump without necessarily switching to a 208/230 V power supply. This configuration can be particularly attractive for certain homes, condominiums, additions, and small commercial spaces in the Greater Montreal Area, provided that the available electrical circuit and the building's heating and cooling load are genuinely compatible with the unit.

The system examined here consists of the DHX12NWB11S indoor unit and the DHX12CSB11S outdoor unit. YORK officially classifies this combination in its X Series, a family of high-efficiency wall-mounted heat pumps offered in 115 V and 208/230 V configurations depending on capacity. The YORK brochure confirms that the 12K 115 V model uses this exact indoor/outdoor pair.

At AirGreen, we believe that a 12,000 BTU unit should be selected based on the actual building rather than a simple rule based on square footage. In Montreal, an older apartment with masonry walls, air infiltration, and large windows may have a very different load from a newer condo in Laval. In Longueuil, on the South Shore, or on the North Shore, solar orientation, floor level, ceiling height, and room layout also influence the result.

“X Series 23 SEER” does not mean that this specific model is rated at 23 SEER

This distinction deserves to be explained clearly.

YORK presents the family as the X Series up to 23 SEER. The catalog indeed states “X Series – Up to 23 SEER.”

However, for the specific DHX12NWB11S / DHX12CSB11S combination at 115 V, the manufacturer's technical table indicates:

  • 12,000 BTU/h of rated cooling capacity;
  • 12,200 BTU/h of rated heating capacity;
  • 22 SEER;
  • 12.5 EER;
  • 10.2 HSPF.

The 23 SEER therefore corresponds to the maximum efficiency achieved by certain models in the X Series, notably the 9,000 BTU 115 V model, while the 12,000 BTU 115 V is rated at 22 SEER in the YORK brochure.

For a buyer comparing several wall-mounted heat pumps, this distinction is important. We always recommend comparing the exact combination of indoor and outdoor models rather than relying solely on the general series name.

The data should also not be converted into SEER2 values. The documentation for this generation uses the older SEER, EER, and HSPF ratings, not the newer SEER2, EER2, and HSPF2 ratings.

A 12,000 BTU capacity that can modulate well beyond the nominal rating

Inverter operation is one of the most interesting features of this YORK X Series.

Its rated cooling capacity is 12,000 BTU/h, but its compressor can modulate from 3,514 to 14,569 BTU/h. In heating, the rated capacity is 12,200 BTU/h, with a published range of 2,764 to 16,582 BTU/h.

This modulation range explains the heat pump’s actual behavior much better than a simple 12,000 BTU figure.

When a home approaches its setpoint temperature, the system does not need to continuously operate at maximum capacity. It can reduce its output, promoting longer and more stable operating periods.

In a properly sized installation, this can help:

  • reduce temperature fluctuations;
  • limit repeated starts and stops;
  • improve dehumidification in summer;
  • reduce abrupt changes in noise;
  • maintain more consistent comfort.

Conversely, installing a 12,000 BTU unit in a space whose actual load is far too low can limit the benefits of this modulation. Even an inverter system has a minimum capacity, here approximately 3,514 BTU/h in cooling.

Why a 115 V power supply can be advantageous

The DHX12CSB11S operates at 115 V, single-phase, 60 Hz. The brochure indicates a rated current of 8.8 A in cooling and also 8.8 A in heating.

For some properties, this feature can make the project easier compared with a heat pump requiring a 208/230 V power supply.

However, this does not mean that the unit can be plugged into just any existing wall outlet.

YORK specifies the following for this combination:

MCA: 15 A
MOCP: 25 A

MCA corresponds to the minimum circuit ampacity, while MOCP represents the maximum overcurrent protection permitted by the manufacturer.

At AirGreen, we therefore always check the available power supply before installation. In older buildings in Montréal, for example, seeing a 115 V outlet nearby is absolutely not enough to confirm that the circuit is suitable for the heat pump.

The power supply, conductor gauge, protection, and connection must comply with applicable electrical requirements.

Four airflow rates: 400, 288, 241, and 171 CFM

The indoor unit DHX12NWB11S offers four airflow rates published by YORK:

400 / 288 / 241 / 171 CFM.

The sound pressure level varies simultaneously between 45 / 40 / 34 / 28 dB(A).

This helps clarify what “quiet operation” really means.

At low speed, the manufacturer specifies 28 dB(A). When the load increases and the unit must move up to 400 CFM, the sound level rises to 45 dB(A). It is therefore normal for a heat pump to be more noticeable when it needs to quickly recover several degrees of temperature.

For a living room or living space, this range is generally much more useful to know than a single decibel figure presented without context.

A compact 33 × 11 × 8-inch wall-mounted unit

The indoor unit measures 33 × 11 × 8 in, or approximately 845 × 289 × 209 mm. YORK also indicates a net weight of approximately 23 lb.

This 33-inch width makes it easier to integrate into many residential configurations, but the chosen location must still meet several requirements.

During our HVAC estimates in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore, and the South Shore, we examine in particular:

  • the clearance above the unit;
  • the proximity of side walls;
  • the presence of doors or windows;
  • the location of tall furniture;
  • the path of the airflow;
  • the possible routing of the refrigerant lines;
  • the condensate drain slope;
  • future access to the filters and components for HVAC maintenance.

The best location is therefore not systematically the wall closest to the outdoor unit.

Well-directed airflow is better than poorly distributed capacity

The AirGreen specifications indicate automatic control of the vertical and horizontal louvers. The X Series documentation also presents air-direction control functions and control options for managing louver positioning.

In practice, the positioning of the wall-mounted unit remains decisive.

A scenario we frequently encounter is wanting to install the unit at the far end of a living room, hoping it will also cool two closed bedrooms located behind a hallway. Even with 12,000 BTU available, air does not travel effectively through walls and closed doors.

We therefore prefer to explain from the outset what a single-zone wall-mounted heat pump can realistically serve. When the home’s layout includes several rooms isolated from one another, a different configuration or a multi-zone system may make more sense.

Heating down to -20 °C: what this value really means

YORK publishes a heating operating range of -20 °C to 24 °C for the DHX12CSB11S. In cooling mode, the published range is -18 °C to 46 °C.

This heat pump can therefore continue operating at significant winter temperatures.

However, two concepts must be distinguished:

minimum operating temperature and heating capacity available at that temperature.

The fact that a heat pump is rated to operate at -20 °C does not mean that it retains its nominal 12,200 BTU capacity at -20 °C.

The AirGreen data sheet currently indicates approximately 9,800 BTU at -8 °C and 8,600 BTU at -15 °C. These values are useful for understanding the gradual decrease in capacity as the outdoor temperature drops.

This is exactly the kind of data we consider when a homeowner wants to use their heat pump as a significant source of heating during the Quebec winter.

A published maximum heating capacity of 16,582 BTU/h

The YORK table indicates a modulating heating capacity of up to 16,582 BTU/h under certain operating conditions.

This maximum value should not be interpreted as a guaranteed capacity at -20 °C. It represents the system’s upper modulation limit under conditions in which the equipment can produce it.

This is another reason why we avoid shortcuts such as “12,000 BTU always means 12,000 BTU.”

A heat pump continuously adjusts its output based on indoor and outdoor temperatures, compressor speed, and heating demand.

Smart defrost: particularly important in heating mode

The X Series uses a defrost system that operates as needed rather than simply applying a fixed cycle without taking conditions into account.

YORK indicates that this strategy helps reduce the energy consumption associated with unnecessary defrost cycles. The brochure also presents a construction featuring a sturdy steel chassis, a corrosion-resistant coating, quiet operation, and indoor temperature display on the indoor unit.

In humid, cold climates, this function is particularly relevant. When the outdoor heat exchanger operates in heating mode, frost may gradually form. The system must then temporarily reverse its cycle to defrost the heat exchanger.

An occasional defrost cycle is therefore normal. It does not automatically indicate an operating problem.

Piping, noise, Wi-Fi, and installation: details to check before choosing this YORK X Series

Refrigerant piping 1/4 in – 1/2 in

For the DHX12CSB11S, YORK specifies:

liquid: 1/4 in
gas: 1/2 in
drain: 5/8 in.

The 1/2 in gas-pipe diameter is particularly important when replacing an older heat pump.

A homeowner may wish to keep the lines already in the wall. This solution is acceptable only if the pipe diameters, condition of the lines, and installation conditions are compatible with the new unit.

We never recommend selecting a heat pump simply because “the pipes are already there.” Incompatible piping can turn an apparently simple replacement into a technically incorrect installation.

Up to 65.5 feet of refrigerant piping

YORK allows a maximum total length of 65.5 ft, or approximately 20 m, for this combination, with a maximum height difference of 33 ft, or approximately 10 m.

This provides useful flexibility for multistory homes, condos, or buildings where the outdoor unit cannot be placed directly behind the indoor unit.

We must nevertheless plan the route carefully. The more complex the route becomes, the more we need to consider the building layout, drainage, the appearance of line-set covers, and the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Outdoor unit: 33 × 21 × 12.5 inches and 53 dB(A)

The DHX12CSB11S outdoor unit measures approximately 33 × 21 × 12.5 in according to the YORK table, with an advertised sound pressure level of 53 dB(A).

Its relatively compact size is helpful for properties with limited outdoor space.

In Montréal and in certain densely built areas of Longueuil or Laval, we pay particular attention to the outdoor unit’s location. Installation near a bedroom, a neighboring window, or in a narrow passageway can amplify the perceived noise.

On the South Shore and the North Shore, available space is sometimes more generous, but we must always consider snow, water runoff during defrosting, and access to components for future service calls.

R-410A refrigerant

This YORK X Series generation uses R-410A. The factory charge indicated for the 12,000 BTU 115 V model is 47.61 oz, or approximately 1.4 kg.

This information is important for future service, particularly since newer generations of HVAC equipment now also use other refrigerants.

When a technician services an older unit, the exact model and refrigerant type must be identified before any work is performed on the refrigeration circuit.

Optional Wi-Fi with the CS532AH adapter

The DRCPX wireless remote control is included as standard with the X Series.

Wi-Fi, however, requires the CS532AH adapter.

YORK indicates that the EWPE Smart App then allows the P, X, and Z Series to be controlled from a smartphone or tablet, and confirms that the CS532AH adapter is required for the P and X Series.

Therefore, three elements must be clearly distinguished:

  • the standard infrared remote control;
  • optional wall-mounted controllers;
  • Wi-Fi control by phone, which requires the appropriate adapter.

Wired controllers are also available

The X Series is not limited to the included remote control.

The YORK catalog notably lists the DWCPX2 wall-mounted controller for the P and X Series. It allows several settings to be managed, including the temperature, operating mode, timer, louver position, turbo mode, and temperature scheduling.

This option may be relevant in an office, a small business, or simply for a homeowner who prefers a fixed wall-mounted controller rather than a remote control.

Compatible YORK filters and accessories

The brochure also lists several accessories for the P, X, and Z Series, including photocatalytic filters and activated carbon filters.

YORK also offers a wall-mounted controller for the DRCPX remote control and drainage piping accessories.

This type of detail is useful during a replacement or maintenance visit because it allows accessories to be ordered by part number rather than by approximation.

Warranty: Registration matters

The AirGreen product page currently presents the warranty as 10 years on the compressor, 10 years on parts, 0 years on labor, with the possibility of additional coverage.

The 2020 YORK brochure specifies that the published standard warranty was 7 years on the compressor and 5 years on parts, but that residential registration could extend this coverage to 10 years on the compressor and 10 years on parts. Ten years of labor protection was also offered with the purchase of the applicable option.

At AirGreen, we therefore consider system registration an important step after installation. Excellent equipment loses some of its value if the necessary steps to obtain the best available coverage are not completed correctly.

ENERGY STAR and subsidies: verify the exact combination

AirGreen’s current product sheet presents this combination as non-ENERGY STAR and non-ENERGY STAR Cold Climate, with AHRI number 8578565.

The YORK brochure, for its part, presents the X Series as a high-efficiency family and displays the ENERGY STAR logo in its documentation, but in the 12K 115 V model table it does not provide a sufficiently explicit line to confirm on its own that this combination is currently eligible for a subsidy program.

For this reason, we do not recommend assuming that a unit is eligible for LogisVert simply because a general series has a certification or because an old brochure displays a logo.

Eligibility must be confirmed based on the exact AHRI combination and the program rules in effect at the time of purchase.

The typical case in which the 12,000 BTU 115 V becomes particularly attractive

Let’s consider a common scenario during an AirGreen estimate: a homeowner has an open-concept living room and dining room with a reasonable floor area, but their electrical panel or configuration makes adding a new 240 V circuit more complicated.

A 115 V heat pump may then seem immediately ideal.

However, we check three things before recommending it:

  1. the actual thermal load of the area;
  2. the capacity of the available electrical circuit;
  3. the possible distribution of air throughout the rooms.

If these three factors are favorable, the YORK X Series 12,000 BTU 115 V may be a very suitable solution.

If the customer instead wants to heat several enclosed rooms, if the low-temperature load exceeds the unit’s capacity, or if the existing power supply is unsuitable, we propose a different configuration.

It is precisely this selection process that makes the difference between buying a heat pump and obtaining an HVAC installation properly suited to the building.

Maintenance: four elements that directly affect performance

To maintain good airflow and limit performance problems, we recommend paying particular attention to four elements:

  • clean the indoor unit’s filters regularly;
  • keep the outdoor coil free of leaves, dust, excessive ice, and debris;
  • do not block the air intake or outlet of the wall-mounted indoor unit;
  • have the unit inspected when an abnormal drop in capacity, unusual noise, or water leak occurs.

A heat pump with heavily clogged filters may experience a significant reduction in airflow. On a unit designed to provide up to 400 CFM, this restriction can result in less even distribution and longer operating times.

Why we place so much importance on proper sizing

YORK explains in its documentation that its mini-split systems use inverter technology to modulate the refrigerant flow according to the zone’s exact demand. The manufacturer also emphasizes that this modulation helps maintain the temperature within a narrower range.

But no inverter technology can replace proper sizing.

At AirGreen, we assess the building, room layout, insulation, windows, sun exposure, electrical system, piping, and outdoor location before finalizing a recommendation.

For this YORK X Series, the main advantage is therefore not only its 12,000 BTU, 115 V power supply, or high efficiency. It is the combination of these features when they genuinely match the project.

The brochure used to document this generation is a YORK/Johnson Controls publication from November 2020, which also confirms the importance of checking the exact model number when an appliance is replaced or when a unit from older inventory is installed.
