For a bedroom, office, condo, small apartment, or enclosed room with a relatively moderate heating and cooling load, installing an oversized heat pump can be just as problematic as installing an undersized unit. The YORK X Series 9,000 BTU 220 V falls into an interesting category: compact wall-mounted mini-splits capable of providing suitable capacity for smaller spaces while maintaining Inverter modulation, high seasonal efficiency, and a heating function that remains usable when the outdoor temperature drops below freezing.

The combination discussed here is specific: DHX09NWB21S indoors and DHX09CSB21S outdoors. YORK identifies it in its catalog as a single-zone X Series wall-mounted heat pump in a 9,000 BTU/h, 208/230 V configuration. The same catalog presents the X Series as a range reaching up to 23 SEER.

At AirGreen, this precision regarding model numbers is essential. Two visually similar YORK wall-mounted units may have different piping, capacity, power supply, or performance specifications. Before replacing or installing a new wall-mounted heat pump in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the North Shore or South Shore, we therefore focus on the exact model rather than just the “9,000 BTU” figure.

The technical specifications of the DHX09NWB21S / DHX09CSB21S

The YORK technical table provides much more useful information than the sole commercial capacity indicated on the box.

For the DHX09NWB21S / DHX09CSB21S configuration, the manufacturer specifies:

These data are those published in the performance table for the X Series 9K model at 208/230 V.

The term “220 V” commonly used to present this product should therefore be understood as a commercial simplification. YORK’s technical documentation actually specifies a 208/230 V power supply.

This difference may seem minor to a homeowner, but it is not minor for the electrical installation. During our HVAC work, we check the available power supply, circuit, protective device, and the requirements listed on the nameplate before commissioning.

Why its modulation range matters in a small room

Inverter technology allows the compressor to avoid operating constantly according to an all-or-nothing logic.

With a published range that drops to approximately 3,099 BTU/h in cooling, this YORK can reduce its capacity as the room approaches the desired temperature. In heating, the published range extends from 1,911 to 12,000 BTU/h.

This is particularly relevant with a 9,000 BTU heat pump, since this type of system is often installed in spaces where oversizing quickly becomes noticeable.

An excessively oversized unit can reach the setpoint too quickly, shorten its cycles, and provide less even control of temperature and humidity. With a properly sized Inverter system, we instead look for regular operating periods at low or medium capacity.

In a small bedroom in Longueuil, a closed office in Montreal, or a condo in Laval, this modulation capacity can matter more for actual comfort than an impressive maximum figure on a specification sheet.

9,000 BTU in cooling, but 11,000 BTU nominally in heating

One detail about this X Series is worth emphasizing: YORK publishes 9,000 BTU/h as the rated cooling capacity, but 11,000 BTU/h in heating for this configuration.

Therefore, “9,000 BTU” should not be interpreted as a universal limit for the unit in all operating modes.

The published maximum heating capacity even reaches 12,000 BTU/h under the conditions used to create the table.

For a Quebec homeowner, however, this does not mean that the unit will consistently deliver 11,000 or 12,000 BTU/h when it is -15 °C or -20 °C outside. The rated capacities and modulation ranges in the catalogue are established under test conditions defined by the manufacturer. Actual performance varies with the outdoor temperature.

Heating down to -20 °C: a limit that must be interpreted correctly

YORK provides a heating operating range of -4 °F to 75 °F, or approximately -20 °C to 24 °C, for the DHX09CSB21S. In cooling mode, the published outdoor operating range is 0 °F to 115 °F, or approximately -18 °C to 46 °C.

For the climate of Greater Montreal, this is particularly important information.

Authorized operation down to -20 °C should not be confused with a modern heat pump designation intended to maintain high capacity at -25 °C or -30 °C. The current AirGreen product sheet also indicates ENERGY STAR Cold Climate: No.

In other words, we can consider this YORK a heat pump that provides heating in cold weather, but we must take into account the dwelling's actual heat load and the supplementary heating system for the coldest days of the Quebec winter.

The AirGreen product sheet also lists heating capacities of 8,800 BTU at -8 °C and 9,000 BTU at -15 °C. However, for any consumption analysis, subsidy application, or precise sizing, we always prioritize verifying the model number and the certification data applicable to the installed system.

One point to monitor: ENERGY STAR information does not fully match across the documents provided

The current AirGreen product sheet indicates:

ENERGY STAR: No
ENERGY STAR Cold Climate: No

However, the 2020 YORK catalog contains a note indicating that all models in this series shown in the table are ENERGY STAR except the 18,000 BTU DHX18NWB21S and DHX18CSB21S models.

The DHX09NWB21S / DHX09CSB21S is not one of the 18K models excluded in this note.

There is therefore a discrepancy between the information provided. For a decision related to LogisVert, ENERGY STAR, or any other financial assistance, we never recommend relying on an old brochure or a single marketing statement. Eligibility must be confirmed using the certification applicable to the exact combination number at the time of the project.

This is also why no rebate amount should be assumed simply because a heat pump has a good SEER rating.

SEER 23, EER 14.29, and HSPF 10.5: the figures to remember from the YORK catalog

The current website specification sheet contains SEER2, HSPF2, and EER2 fields whose displayed values appear clearly misformatted. For this product generation, the 2020 YORK catalog clearly provides values based on the older methodology:

We avoid automatically converting these ratings into SEER2, EER2, or HSPF2, because they are different rating standards.

For consumers, the practical point is simple: the 23 SEER stated in the title does correspond to the value published by YORK for the 9,000 BTU 208/230 V X Series heat pump.

A compact indoor unit with four airflow levels

The DHX09NWB21S indoor unit measures approximately 33 × 11 × 8 in., or 845 × 289 × 209 mm.

YORK publishes four airflow levels:

318 / 288 / 241 / 171 CFM

and four sound pressure levels:

43 / 39 / 35 / 29 dB(A).

 

Operation at 29 dB(A) at low speed is particularly relevant in a bedroom, office, or space where noise is an important consideration.

However, we emphasize one point during our installations: perceived noise depends not only on the specification sheet. An appliance placed directly above the head of the bed, an improperly secured line, or an outdoor unit mounted on a structure that transmits vibrations can significantly diminish the experience.

The quality of the HVAC installation therefore remains just as important as the published sound level.

Installation of the YORK X Series 9K: what we check before mounting the unit on the wall

With a small-capacity mini-split, it can be tempting to view the installation as a simple job. However, the same refrigeration, electrical, and mechanical principles apply as with a larger heat pump.

At AirGreen, we prepare the installation by considering airflow, piping, the drain, the outdoor unit’s position, and future access for heat pump maintenance.

Refrigerant piping: 1/4 in. and 3/8 in.

For the DHX09CSB21S, YORK specifies:

  • liquid: 1/4 po;
  • gas: 3/8 po;
  • drain: 5/8 po;
  • maximum piping length: 49.2 ft / 15 m;
  • maximum height difference: 33 ft / 10 m.

 

These diameters are particularly important when replacing a unit.

We regularly see projects where a homeowner wants to keep the pipes already installed in the wall to reduce the amount of work. This is sometimes possible, but only after verification.

Existing piping with the wrong diameter is not automatically compatible just because it physically connects the two units. Its condition, routing, insulation and the quality of the previous installation must also be considered.

For this YORK 9K, the technical reference is therefore 1/4 – 3/8 in.

33 × 21 × 13 in outdoor unit

The outdoor unit DHX09CSB21S measures approximately 33 × 21 × 13 in, or 848 × 540 × 320 mm. The published outdoor sound pressure level is 53 dB(A).

Its relatively compact size makes several residential installations easier, but we must still maintain the required clearances.

In Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, Montérégie, on the North Shore or the South Shore, we check in particular:

  • space around the outdoor coil;
  • airflow;
  • snow accumulation;
  • water drainage during defrost cycles;
  • proximity to windows and neighbours;
  • possible vibrations;
  • technician access during a future service call;
  • compliance with applicable municipal regulations.

A compact outdoor unit does not mean that it should be installed in a confined space.

MCA 9 A and maximum protection 15 A

YORK documentation specifies a minimum circuit ampacity of 9 A and maximum overcurrent protection of 15 A for the 9K model at 208/230 V.

These values are much more relevant for the installation than simply stating “220 V.”

Before the work begins, the electrical supply must be checked against the actual equipment and its nameplate. When replacing an old heat pump, we do not automatically assume that the existing circuit can be kept without an inspection.

Automatic louvers and air distribution

The AirGreen product sheet indicates automatic control of the vertical and horizontal louvers.

This feature is useful with a 9,000 BTU unit installed in a long room or in a space where the airflow must be directed away from the occupied area. The YORK catalog also lists air-sweep functions in its single-zone system feature table, including vertical and horizontal movement depending on the series.

In practice, we mainly aim to position the unit so that this air distribution is used intelligently.

For example, installing the indoor unit just a few centimeters from a large cabinet and then relying on the louvers to “work around” the obstacle is not a good strategy. The best results first come from an unobstructed location that provides sufficient airflow range.

Wi-Fi: available, but the CS532AH adapter is required

Wi-Fi control is not integrated as standard in the same way as it is on several newer units.

The YORK catalog identifies the EWPE Smart app for the P, X, and Z Series and specifies that the P and X Series require the CS532AH adapter.

The Wi-Fi: Optional note on the AirGreen product sheet is therefore consistent with the brochure.

Once the appropriate option has been installed, the system can be controlled from a phone or tablet, depending on application and hardware compatibility.

The DRCPX wireless remote control is the standard controller associated with the X Series.

A design focused on precision and quiet operation

YORK highlights several features specific to the X Series: high-efficiency Inverter technology, heavy-gauge steel construction, quiet operation, room-temperature display on the indoor unit, corrosion-resistant treatment, and demand-based defrosting to limit unnecessary energy consumption.

Defrosting deserves particular attention in Quebec.

During winter heating, the outdoor coil can accumulate frost. The heat pump must then periodically reverse its operation to defrost the coil. Intelligent defrost management aims to trigger this sequence when necessary rather than according to an overly rigid cycle.

For the user, this helps keep the system running without manual intervention.

Where is a 9,000 BTU unit generally appropriate?

We never associate a capacity solely with a fixed area. Two rooms of the same size can have completely different needs.

A bedroom with two large south-facing windows beneath a poorly insulated roof may have a higher load than an interior office of the same size. A newer condo in Boucherville does not behave thermally the same way as a unit in an older building in Montréal.

In our experience, a 9,000 BTU wall-mounted heat pump may be considered for:

  • a good-sized bedroom;
  • a home office;
  • a small condo;
  • a room added to a residence;
  • a studio;
  • a small professional space;
  • an independent zone in a building that already has another heating system.

The final choice must take into account insulation, windows, solar exposure, room volume, internal heat gains, and actual air circulation.

A common mistake: buying 12,000 BTU “to be sure”

In small spaces, we often encounter the following reasoning: if 9,000 BTU seems sufficient, 12,000 BTU must necessarily be better.

That is not always the case.

A properly sized unit can provide better humidity control, more uniform temperatures, and longer cycles at partial load. Inverter technology expands the operating range, but it does not make proper sizing unnecessary.

The DHX09 has a cooling range that drops to approximately 3 099 BTU/h, allowing it to modulate well below its rated capacity.

For us, the right choice is therefore not “the largest unit possible,” but the one that genuinely matches the room’s load.

Maintenance: a small unit can also lose a great deal of airflow

This unit’s maximum airflow reaches 318 CFM. When the filters, evaporator, or blower wheel become clogged with dust, air circulation can deteriorate.

The consequences are familiar: less uniform temperatures, prolonged operation, reduced airflow, and dirt buildup inside the wall-mounted unit.

We recommend regularly cleaning accessible filters and having a thorough wall-mounted heat pump maintenance performed when the condition of the evaporator and blower wheel warrants it.

In homes with pets, open kitchens, and systems used intensively during summer and winter, dirt can build up more quickly.

YORK warranty: why registering the system matters

The 2020 YORK documentation distinguishes between two levels of warranty.

The standard warranty mentioned in the catalogue is 7 years on the compressor and 5 years on parts. For an eligible residential installation registered online, YORK indicates an extension to 10 years on the compressor and 10 years on parts. Ten-year labour coverage was also presented as an option requiring additional coverage.

The current AirGreen product sheet displays 10-10-0 years, with the possibility of an additional warranty.

This detail illustrates the importance of properly registering the equipment and retaining the system information after installation. An extended warranty is useful only if the owner can clearly identify the model and serial numbers and the registration conditions have been met.

What We Appreciate Technically About This YORK X Series 9K

For a project where its characteristics genuinely match the heating load, several features are of interest:

23 SEER according to the YORK catalogue, cooling modulation from 3,099 to 9,599 BTU/h, a nominal heating capacity higher than the nominal cooling capacity, a 208/230 V power supply, relatively common 1/4–3/8 in piping, an indoor sound level as low as 29 dB(A), and an outdoor unit with reasonable dimensions.

However, it also has limitations to consider: the refrigerant is R-410A, its published operating limit in heating mode is -20 °C, and its ENERGY STAR status should be validated because the information provided by the current product sheet and the 2020 catalogue do not fully match.

This is precisely the kind of product for which a serious technical comparison is more valuable than a simple ranking based on the number of BTUs.
