Quick facts
The galvanized side take-off with damper starts a round branch from the side of a main duct or plenum, like a regular take-off, but with a built-in damper. A shaft that sticks out of the fitting lets you adjust the blade and therefore the air sent into the branch.
Room-by-room comfort starts where the branch begins
In a forced-air system, rooms close to the unit often get too much air and distant rooms not enough. Balancing means slightly restricting the favoured branches to give air back to the others. With the damper in the take-off, this adjustment is made at the main duct, without a separate damper on each branch.
Seven diameters
Available in 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14 in. The size is the diameter of the round branch to be connected.
Installation and adjustment tips
- Position the take-off so the shaft stays accessible after the ceiling is finished, or plan for an access hatch.
- Screw the take-off to the main duct and seal around it with duct sealant or aluminum tape.
- Adjust the dampers with the system running, in small steps, starting with the rooms closest to the unit.
- Mark the final position of each shaft.
Revisiting the settings between winter and summer often helps: warm air and cool air do not distribute the same way in a multi-storey house.

Balancing each room at the source
A bedroom too warm and a living room too cold on the same system usually comes down to airflow per branch, which the built-in damper lets you adjust.
- Forced-air branch take-offs you want to be able to balance
- Systems with no room for a separate damper on the branch
- Adding a branch to a distant room or the basement
- Replacing an old take-off that has no damper

Frequently asked questions
What does the take-off damper do?
It sets how much air goes into the branch. Closing the branches to overheated rooms a little sends air toward the rooms that lack it.
How do I adjust it?
Turn the rod that sticks out of the fitting. Make small changes with the system running and check comfort room by room.
How is it different from the plain side take-off?
Same job, with a built-in damper. The plain version needs a separate damper if you want to adjust the branch.
Can you balance my system?
Yes. We install take-offs and balance airflow room by room on our forced-air jobs across Greater Montréal.
