The galvanized 90° top takeoff starts a round branch from the top of a main duct or plenum, then turns it horizontal. Takeoff and elbow are combined in a single piece: the branch rises and runs straight off between the joists.

The takeoff for basements where every inch counts

In a finished basement, or one being finished, the goal is to keep the ceiling high. The main duct is fastened under the joists; if the branches left from the side and then ran underneath, they would take up even more height. With a top takeoff, the branch goes directly into the space between two joists and runs parallel to them to the floor register.

Five diameters

Available in 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10 in. The size is the diameter of the round branch, chosen according to the airflow needed in the room.

Installation

  • Hold the takeoff on top of the duct, outlet facing the branch, and trace the opening.
  • Cut cleanly, insert the takeoff and fasten it with sheet metal screws.
  • Seal around the edge with mastic or aluminum tape.
  • Install an accessible round damper on the branch for balancing.

By combining takeoff and elbow, you eliminate a joint, and with it a source of air leakage in the ceiling.

01 · What it is for

Saving headroom under the joists

The trunk often sits tight under the joists: the top take-off lifts the branch into the space between them, without a separate elbow.

  • Branches that must run between the joists, parallel to them
  • Basements where you want to keep the ceiling as high as possible
  • Branch take-offs on a furnace or central heat pump plenum
  • Replacing a leaky take-off and elbow assembly
Take-off and elbow in oneThe 90° turn is part of the fitting: one joint fewer to seal.
Clear ceilingThe branch rises between the joists instead of hanging below the trunk.

Frequently asked questions

How is it different from a side take-off?

The side take-off leaves from the side of the trunk. The top take-off leaves from the top and turns 90°, which runs the branch between the joists.

Can it go on a plenum?

Yes, on a horizontal face of the plenum, with the outlet pointing toward the branch.

Do I need a damper?

It is recommended. Add a round damper on the branch, in a straight and reachable section.

Can you install it?

Yes. We rebuild and add forced-air branches across Greater Montréal, including during basement finishing.
