Quick facts
175 US gallons of reserve, in a tank built to the ASME code
When an electric boiler or an air-to-water heat pump heats an entire building, the water loop needs a volume that absorbs swings in demand. The Thermo 2000 BuffMax BUFF175A-3NPT-HRZ-HT buffer tank provides 175 US gallons of insulated heating water, in a vessel built to Section VIII, Division 1, of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. Like the whole series, it combines buffer tank, storage tank and hydraulic separator.
The middle size of the ASME series
Thermo 2000 offers three ASME BuffMax tanks: 120, 175 and 200 gallons. The BUFF175A is the one we select when the loop calculation goes beyond the first size without justifying the largest. Take a multi-storey building in Montreal where each unit has its own thermostat, or a commercial building on the South Shore whose zones open and close with business hours. The reserve lets the source run longer cycles, while the four 3 in NPT connections, split two per side, isolate its circuit from the distribution circuit. These multi-zone loops, supplied by a low-mass boiler or a heat pump, are exactly what Thermo 2000 recommends the BuffMax for.
An 87-inch tank is planned before delivery
At 87 inches high and 32 inches in diameter, the BUFF175A does not fit everywhere. Before ordering, we measure the clear height of the mechanical room, the door widths, the stairs and the path from the truck. Lifting lugs make handling easier; once in place, the tank stands on adjustable legs. Supplied accessories: 1/2 in ball valve and automatic air vent, 2 1/2 in temperature and pressure indicator, immersion well and 3/4 in drain valve, in addition to three 1/2 in well connections on the tank.
On insulation, Thermo 2000 announces 2 inches of HFC-free polyurethane and heat loss limited to 1/2 °F per hour. The maximum working pressure is 125 psi, the ASME value published by the manufacturer.
Heating only, in a closed loop
The HT suffix means heating water. For a loop that also carries chilled water, you need an HC BuffMax, which is not built to the ASME code. The BXT option, which adds centre connections, is not available on ASME models. And the tank is never connected to domestic hot water or to an atmospheric system. If your specification requires a CRN number, note that the manufacturer’s documentation does not state one: we confirm it with Thermo 2000 before ordering.
What AirGreen does
- Free on-site visit and estimate, in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the North Shore or on the South Shore.
- A written quote, with the size chosen and the handling plan.
- Delivery, setting the tank and connecting the source side and the distribution side.
- Filling, purging and commissioning the loop.
A family business established in Montreal for more than 15 years, AirGreen holds RBQ licence 5645-9605-01 in ventilation, refrigeration and electrical work. Thermo 2000’s warranty covers the tank for 5 years in heating applications and the mechanical parts for 2 years, under its terms.
Send us your building’s plans or specification: we validate the size and the access before sending you a written quote. Free estimate and financing available.
A 175-gallon ASME reserve for building heating loops
Between the BUFF120A and the BUFF200A, the BUFF175A gives a large heating-water reserve to buildings that require an ASME tank. It separates the source from the distribution through four 3 in NPT connections.
- Multi-storey building heated with water by an electric boiler
- Commercial building whose mechanical specification requires an ASME tank
- Heating loop supplied by an air-to-water heat pump, with many zones
- Replacing an old buffer tank in an existing mechanical room

Frequently asked questions
Why choose 175 gallons rather than 120 or 200?
The volume comes from a calculation: source capacity, number of zones, smallest load to cover. The BUFF175A sits in the middle of the ASME series; we select it when that calculation falls between the other two sizes.
How much height does the mechanical room need?
The tank is 87 in high and 32 in in diameter. Add room for the 3 in piping and for servicing the air vent and the drain valve. We measure the room before confirming.
Does the tank have a CRN number?
Thermo 2000’s documentation states ASME construction, Section VIII, Division 1, but no CRN number. If your project requires one, we confirm it with the manufacturer before ordering.
Can it take chilled water?
No. The HT code means heating water. HC versions of the BuffMax accept chilled water, but they are not built to the ASME code.
What does Thermo 2000’s warranty cover?
The tank is warranted for 5 years in heating applications and the other parts and components for 2 years, in residential or commercial use in Canada and the United States. Removal, reinstallation and shipping costs are excluded.
