The extended galvanized outlet (boot) connects a round forced-air branch to a grille’s rectangular opening, like other outlets, but with a longer body. It is used when the grille sits farther from the end of the branch than a standard outlet can reach.

Reaching the grille without adding pieces

A grille’s location is often decided for the room — under a window, away from furniture — and not for the basement. The result: between the end of the branch and the opening, there is sometimes a joist, blocking or simply too much distance. Rather than adding a piece of duct, an elbow and two more joints, the extended outlet spans that distance in a single piece. Fewer joints means fewer air leaks between the joists.

Seven sizes

  • 2-1/4 × 10 in: 5 in collar
  • 3-1/4 × 10 in: 4, 5 or 6 in collar
  • 4 × 10 in: 4, 5 or 6 in collar

The size reads as opening (width × length) × round collar diameter. The body length is not given here: if space is tight, send us your measurements before ordering.

Installation

Fasten the outlet securely to the joists or the subfloor, screw the duct to the collar and seal the collar as well as the perimeter of the opening with mastic or aluminum tape.

01 · What it is for

When the register is not right at the end of the branch

A joist, blocking or the register location sometimes puts the opening away from the end of the branch: the long boot covers that distance.

  • Registers offset from the end of the branch
  • Branches stopped short of an obstacle under the floor
  • Replacing an existing long boot
  • Floor outlets in renovated rooms
More reachIts longer body reaches an opening farther from the collar.
Less improvisingAvoids adding a stub of duct and an elbow under the register.
Seven sizesSame openings and collars as the universal boot.

04 · Before installing

What to know before installing

  • Sizes read width × length of the opening, then round collar diameter.
  • Measure the distance from the end of the branch to the opening before choosing between a long and a standard boot.
  • Fasten the boot to the joists: a longer body needs good support.
  • Seal the collar and the edge of the opening.
