The galvanized angled outlet, called a boot on job sites, ends a forced-air branch under a register. Its round collar takes the branch duct; its rectangular opening sits in the floor, under the register. In between, the boot turns the air toward the room.

The last fitting before the room

A poorly connected or poorly sealed outlet lets a good share of the heated or cooled air escape between the joists. The angled boot gives a clean turn and a tight joint at the floor. It is used for new outlets as well as to replace the old rusted boots often found when renovating a basement.

How to read the size

The size reads as three numbers: width × length of the rectangular opening, then the diameter of the round collar. A 3-1/4 × 10 × 5 in boot has a 3-1/4 in by 10 in opening and takes a 5 in duct.

  • 2-1/4 × 10 in: narrowest opening
  • 3-1/4 × 10 in: mid-size opening
  • 4 × 10 in: widest opening

Each opening is available with a 4, 5 or 6 in collar. Choose the opening based on the register, the collar based on the branch.

Installation

Fasten the boot to the joists or the subfloor, screw the duct to the collar and seal both joints with mastic or aluminum tape, including around the opening at the floor.

01 · What it is for

The end of the branch, under the register

The branch arrives between the joists; the angle boot changes the air’s direction and brings it to the floor register opening.

  • Floor outlets on a forced-air system
  • A branch arriving horizontally under a register
  • Replacing an old rusted or poorly sealed boot
  • Adding an outlet in a renovated room
Built-in turnThe boot changes the air’s direction toward the opening, with no separate elbow.

04 · Before installing

What to know before installing

  • Sizes read width × length of the rectangular opening, then round collar diameter.
  • Pick the opening from the register you will install and the collar from the branch diameter.
  • Seal the joint between boot and floor and the collar: that is where air most often escapes.
  • Fasten the boot to the joists or subfloor so it does not move when the register goes in.

Frequently asked questions

How do I read 2-1/4 × 10 × 6 in?

The rectangular opening is 2-1/4 in by 10 in and the round collar takes a 6 in duct.

Which opening should I choose?

The one that matches the register installed or planned. When replacing a boot, measure the opening in the floor.

Angle, universal or long boot?

All three connect a round branch to a register. The choice depends on how the branch reaches the register and the room available; send us a photo and we will point you to the right one.

Can you install it?

Yes. We install and replace forced-air boots across Greater Montréal.
