Quick facts
The galvanized universal register boot (boot) connects a round forced-air branch to the rectangular opening of a register. As its name suggests, it is the all-purpose model of the family: it is designed for the most common configurations, which makes it a good boot to keep on hand on a job site.
Fewer models to plan for, more flexibility on site
During a renovation, the position of a joist, a brace or a plumbing pipe often decides how the branch will reach its register. With a universal boot, the installer keeps some leeway to adapt the fitting at installation. For a branch that arrives horizontally under a floor register, the angled boot is also an option; for an opening far from the duct, see the extended boot.
Seven sizes
- 2-1/4 × 10 in: 5 in collar
- 3-1/4 × 10 in: 4, 5 or 6 in collar
- 4 × 10 in: 4, 5 or 6 in collar
The size reads as opening (width × length) × collar diameter. Choose the opening based on the register and the collar based on the branch.
Installation
Hold the boot in position before cutting the floor or drywall. Fasten it securely, screw the duct to the collar and seal the joints with duct sealant or aluminum tape. The register is not included.

One boot for the usual cases
On site you don’t always know ahead of time exactly how each branch will meet its register: the universal boot covers the most frequent layouts.
- Floor, wall or ceiling outlets on a forced-air system, depending on the layout
- Jobs where you want a single boot model on hand
- Replacing an existing boot with the same opening
- Adding an outlet during a renovation
