Five tons: what the specifications sheet states, and what the unit delivers

The 5-ton TCL APEX XS central heat pump, in Zinc White finish, is the largest format in the series. It is intended for high-demand buildings: large residences over 3,000 square feet, multifamily buildings served by a shared system, light commercial spaces, and buildings with significant open areas.

Let's begin with a clarification we prefer to provide up front. The manufacturer's specifications sheet calls this model “60,000 BTU/h,” but the certified nominal capacity is 54,000 BTU/h, with a peak that can reach 60,000 BTU/h in cooling mode. The series' commercial designation uses the round number; the AHRI rating, which is used for sizing, is 54,000. Sizing based on 60,000 BTU/h would result in a unit that is undersized for the intended load.

The certified data

Values from the NEEP cold-climate heat pump directory, based on AHRI-certified tests:

  • 54,000 BTU/h at 8.3 °C — COP 3.40
  • 54,000 BTU/h at -8 °C — COP 2.20
  • 50,000 BTU/h at -15 °C — COP 1.85
  • 25,000 BTU/h at -30 °C at maximum capacity — COP 1.20

This is the only capacity in the series that shows a slight reduction at -15 °C — 50,000 BTU/h instead of 54,000, a loss of 7.4%. This is modest compared with what most central systems lose at this temperature, but it should be included in the calculation rather than ignored.

Seasonal performance: 17.0 SEER2, 10.0 EER2, 9.5 HSPF2. These are the lowest values in the range, which is normal: with the same heat exchanger capacity, a higher-capacity machine operates closer to its limits. The unit remains certified as ENERGY STAR Cold Climate.

Electricity: the real limiting factor in a 5-ton project

For this size, the determining constraint is almost never space or the ductwork. It is the panel.

The outdoor unit alone requires 42 A of minimum ampacity, with 60 A overcurrent protection. The air handler has its own power supply. And if an auxiliary heat kit is installed—which is common at this capacity—the load increases further: a 20 kW element at 230 V alone represents a major electrical load, with its own protection.

In a light commercial building or a multifamily property, the total load may exceed what the existing electrical service can support. Three scenarios then arise:

  1. The service is sufficient—the project proceeds as is, after a load calculation in accordance with the Code.
  2. The panel must be replaced, while the service remains adequate. Moderate cost, short timeline.
  3. The electrical service must be upgraded, which involves the utility, delays, and a significant budget.

We determine which of these three situations applies to the building before preparing the quote. This is the check that prevents a project from stalling halfway through.

The 1,800 CFM airflow and the ductwork that must handle it

One thousand eight hundred cubic feet per minute is a considerable volume of air. In a light commercial building with generous main ducts, it passes through without difficulty. In a residence whose ductwork was designed for 3 tons, it does not—and the equipment becomes choked, with static pressure well beyond the 0.8 in. margin.

The consequence is not merely a loss of efficiency. Insufficient airflow in heating mode raises the heat exchanger temperature and triggers safety controls; in cooling mode, it can cause the indoor heat exchanger to ice up. These are recurring faults caused by the ductwork, not the equipment, and they result in service visits until someone measures the static pressure.

$6,480 in financial assistance

Hydro-Québec's LogisVert program provides $6,480 for this model in an existing home, and $7,560 in new construction. This is the highest amount for the entire TCL lineup.

The application must be submitted within nine months of installation. It applies to the certified combination H60APH20UDE / H60SDH20XQC identified by its AHRI certificate: substituting another indoor unit breaks the combination and jeopardizes eligibility. We validate all of this before ordering and assist with submitting the application. The amounts are reviewed periodically, and we confirm the amount in effect when the quote is prepared.

Light commercial applications

At 5 tons, some installations serve commercial spaces: offices, clinics, retail stores, and training rooms. The considerations differ from residential applications:

  • Occupancy hours concentrate the load into specific periods, favoring an inverter-driven unit capable of a wide modulation range.
  • Internal gains—lighting, equipment, and occupants—carry significant weight in the calculation and increase the cooling load relative to the heating load.
  • Fresh-air renewal is subject to regulatory requirements and must be treated as a separate load.
  • Service continuity matters more: a breakdown in a commercial setting has a direct cost, which often justifies more intensive preventive maintenance.

Maintenance

A unit of this capacity warrants professional annual maintenance, and semiannual maintenance in commercial use. The program covers cleaning the indoor coil, the 22 x 20 filter, the condensate pan and drain, checking the R-32 charge, inspecting the outdoor coil, checking clearances, and measuring airflow.

The volume of condensate produced during full cooling is significant: a properly sloped, clean drain equipped with an adequate trap is not a minor detail on a 5-ton system.
