Two details that few people know about and that can be costly when learned too late. The R-454B refrigerant, and why it changes the game during installation
The Ultimate 25 operates with R-454B, which is gradually replacing R-410A in the industry. But it also has a practical implication on the job site: it is an A2L-classified, mildly flammable refrigerant, and handling it requires suitable tools and methods.
In practical terms, this means more rigorous vacuum evacuation, systematic leak detection, and strict adherence to piping lengths and additional charge requirements. An installer who treats an R-454B system like an old R-410A system produces one that works the first winter and then deteriorates. The sizing errors we see most often
- Trying to heat two floors with a single wall-mounted unit. Warm air rises, but it does not go around walls. A 12,000 BTU unit on the ground floor will not heat the upstairs bedrooms, regardless of its efficiency.
- Installing it in a corner. A wall-mounted unit placed at the end of a room, blowing toward a wall three feet away, circulates nothing. The built-in thermostat then reads a temperature that is not the room's actual temperature.
- Overlooking closed doors. A bedroom with the door closed is thermally a separate room. If that bedroom's comfort matters, either a dedicated solution or a planned air transfer is required.
