Central Heat Pump ARCOAIRE H4H5S ION | 3 Tons - 36,000 BTU (Air Handler FJMA4X) - R410A
A large home heated by the heat pump first, with even comfort right up to the windows
In a large home, winter comfort is not just the temperature shown on the thermostat. It also depends on how heat reaches each room, on the air near the windows and on the humidity of the indoor air. A central heat pump connected to the existing ducts heats the house gently and continuously, then cools it in summer. The Central Heat Pump ARCOAIRE H4H5S ION | 3 Tons - 36,000 BTU (Air Handler FJMA4X) - R410A pairs the H4H5S36AKAAA outdoor unit with the FJMA4X36L0BB cabinet, which pushes air through the duct system.
Its certified ratings are 14.3 SEER2, 12.0 EER2 and 7.5 HSPF2.
For large homes with ducts
The 3-ton size is aimed at large homes that already have ducts: a spacious two-storey house, a detached house with a finished basement, a large single-storey house with many windows. It handles the cooling of every room served and most of the heating.
The size is confirmed with a room-by-room load calculation that takes into account insulation, windows, orientation and airtightness. A large, recent, well-insulated home may do with the size below; we say so during the visit.
The 3-ton ION pairing
The H4H5S36AKAAA outdoor unit holds the compressor, the outdoor coil and its fan. The FJMA4X36L0BB cabinet is an air handler that takes the place of the old electric furnace: it houses the indoor coil, the blower and the backup electric heating elements. The two units are certified together, linked by an insulated copper refrigerant line, and run on R-410A.
In winter, the refrigerant captures heat from the outdoor air, the compressor concentrates it and the cabinet's coil releases it to the air of the house. In summer, a reversing valve turns the cycle around.
Gentle heat rather than bursts of hot air
An electric furnace blows very hot air for short periods, then stops. A heat pump blows warm air for longer. At first, the difference is surprising: a hand held in front of a grille does not feel the same heat. But the house itself stays at a steadier temperature, without the swings that follow each time the furnace shuts off.
For this comfort to reach the windows, the supply grilles must be well placed, ideally under the windows, where air cools against the glass. The airflow must also be set properly at commissioning: too much airflow feels like a draft, too little leaves rooms cool. We adjust this setting to suit the home's duct system.
What the certificate shows
The certificate lists 20,600 BTU/h at -8 °C (17 °F) and 15,900 BTU/h at -15 °C (5 °F), with a COP of 2.06 at -15 °C. The two points are measured separately; we report each one as published.
Compared with the nominal size of 36,000 BTU, the listed capacity represents about 57% at -8 °C and 44% at -15 °C. At -15 °C, the heat pump still delivers about twice the energy it uses; in a large home, the backup then supplies the rest.
These figures come from certificate AHRI 210998738, as published in the AHRI certification directory.
Backup heat, properly sized for a large home
The cabinet's backup elements take over when the heat pump is no longer enough, in deep cold, and briefly during defrost to avoid blowing cool air into the rooms. They switch off as soon as the heat pump is enough again. The thermostat, designed for a heat pump with backup, makes the heat pump work first.
In a large home, the backup is a significant electrical load. Too small, it leaves rooms cool on the coldest nights; too large, it asks more of the panel than necessary. We size it from the load calculation and the capacity of the electrical panel, and list it in the quote.
Dry winter air and the central humidifier
In winter, cold outdoor air holds little moisture. Once it is warmed in the house, whatever the heating method, it becomes dry: a scratchy throat in the morning, static electricity, woodwork that shifts. This is not specific to heat pumps, but a central system offers a simple solution: a central humidifier connected to the ducts, which adds moisture to the air distributed to every room.
We can assess this addition during the visit and include it in the quote if you wish. A properly set humidifier takes the outdoor temperature into account, to avoid condensation on the windows in deep cold.
The ratings, plainly
- SEER2 (14.3): seasonal cooling efficiency.
- EER2 (12.0): cooling efficiency at full demand, in hot weather.
- HSPF2 (7.5): seasonal heating efficiency, the most important rating in Quebec.
- COP (2.06 at -15 °C): the heat delivered per unit of electricity at that temperature; a baseboard is at 1.
These are the ratings of a conventional system. If higher ratings or a grant are your priority, we will also show you pairings of comparable size that meet those goals.
Summer
In summer, the cabinet cools the air and removes humidity, which flows out through the condensate drain. Every room served is cooled, with no window unit. The same well-placed grilles under the windows deliver cool air where the sun heats the most.
LogisVert
This pairing does not carry an amount on Hydro-Québec's LogisVert list of October 19, 2026. If the grant matters for your project, we will point you to an eligible pairing of comparable size.
Installation by AirGreen
The job
- Visit and load calculation: survey of the rooms and windows, inspection of the ducts, return air and electrical panel. A central heat pump only delivers its full efficiency if the airflow keeps up.
- Removal of the old electric furnace and, where applicable, the old air conditioner, with recovery of the refrigerant.
- FJMA4X cabinet: connection to the plenum and return air, condensate drain to a floor drain or a pump; central humidifier if planned.
- Outdoor unit: on a stand or a bracket, above the snow line, away from roof drips and dryer vents.
- Refrigerant line: insulated copper, brazing, pressure test and vacuum.
- Electrical: dedicated circuit, outdoor disconnect, power to the backup and thermostat.
- Commissioning: refrigerant charge, airflow setting, test of the defrost and the backup, then an explanation of how everything works.
Maintenance and warranty
Check the cabinet filter every month in season and replace it according to its format. Keep the outdoor unit clear of snow and leaves, and do not cover it in winter. Plan annual HVAC maintenance of the coils, the condensate drain and the electrical connections, and of the humidifier where applicable. In winter, the white vapour during defrost is normal.
Warranty: 10 years on the compressor, 10 years on parts and 6 years on labor.
