The noise of a central system in a densely populated area: what 53 dB(A) means at the neighbor's home
In neighborhoods where houses are only a few feet apart — Rosemont, Villeray, Verdun, Old Longueuil, and the duplex areas of Laval — the location of the outdoor unit is a neighborhood issue before it is a technical one. We have seen flawless installations become complaint cases because no one had checked where the neighboring bedroom window was.
The TCL APEX XS 4-ton central heat pump in Basalt Grey finish performs well in this regard: 53 dB(A) outdoors for a capacity of 48,000 BTU/h. This is the lowest sound level among the four capacities in the series, including the lower-capacity models. Still, you need to understand what this figure means and what it does not guarantee.
How to read a sound level correctly
A level of 53 dB(A) is measured at a standardized distance, in free field, with the unit operating at full capacity. Three factors change what the neighbor actually perceives:
- Distance. The level decreases by approximately 6 dB each time the distance doubles. At six feet rather than three, the unit sounds noticeably less intrusive.
- Reflective surfaces. A unit placed in a narrow corridor between two brick walls does not lose sound energy: it bounces back. The same unit at the same level seems several decibels louder in this configuration than in an open area.
- Structure-borne transmission. This is the most underestimated factor. A unit rigidly attached to a wall or placed on a slab connected to the foundation transmits its vibrations through the building. The occupant then hears a low rumble indoors, which the level measured outside does not predict at all.
A real advantage of inverter technology is worth highlighting: the unit modulates. It operates most of the time well below its maximum capacity, and therefore well below its stated sound level. The 53 dB(A) corresponds to a peak, not its usual operating level.
Our placement guidelines in densely populated areas
- Systematic anti-vibration mounts, and never rigidly fastened to the building structure.
- Distance from bedroom windows — both yours and your neighbor's. This check is done on-site, by looking at the adjacent façade.
- Do not install in a narrow corridor closed at both ends when an alternative exists. The reverberation effect there is significant.
- Orient the air outlet toward the most open space available, never toward a nearby window at close range.
- Check municipal regulations on mechanical equipment noise at the property line — thresholds vary from one borough to another in Greater Montreal.
The vertical shape of the 4-ton outdoor unit is helpful in these situations: it takes up little ground space, making it possible to position it farther from the property line where a wider appliance would not fit.

Indoor noise, the other half of acoustic comfort
Much is said about the outdoor unit and rarely about the air handler. Yet it is the one located inside the building, often in the basement and sometimes next to an occupied room.
The 52 dB(A) measured at the appliance are a starting point. What the occupant hears then depends almost entirely on the installation:
- A plenum that is too short at the fan outlet creates audible turbulence throughout the network of ducts.
- An undersized return-air system produces a characteristic whistling sound at the grille, indicating that the unit is drawing in more air than the opening allows through.
- A rigid connection between the unit and the ducts transmits fan vibrations throughout the house. A flexible connection solves the problem.
- Airflow set too high to compensate for a restricted duct system turns a quiet system into a wind tunnel.
On a unit that moves 1,530 CFM, these details are not cosmetic. A central system's quiet operation is achieved during installation, not at the time of purchase.
The Basalt Grey finish in an urban setting
In a backyard in a central neighborhood, the outdoor unit is visible from the lane, the neighbor's balcony, and often the kitchen window. Basalt grey blends in better against a concrete foundation or dark brick than the lighter finish, and it maintains a clean appearance longer despite street dust and salt residue.
Mechanically, the two finishes are strictly identical: same components, same dimensions, same ENERGY STAR Cold Climate certification.
Maintenance
A new noise is almost always the first sign that maintenance is needed. A rumble outdoors often indicates a loose mount or a sunken support; an indoor whistling sound, a clogged 22 x 20 filter or obstructed return air; a rattling sound at startup, a loose panel.
