A 12,000 BTU unit that runs on a 15 A circuit

In Deux-Montagnes, rooms added to the back of a bungalow often have one full wall of windows. The glass overheats the room in July and drains its heat in January, and there is no free wall space left to hang a unit. The DURASTAR Sirius Heat 12,000 BTU R410A floor console heat pump answers both constraints: it sits on the floor under the windows, and it only needs a 15 A circuit.

What the certificate lists

  • Seasonal efficiency of 23.6 SEER2, 13.0 EER2 and 10.0 HSPF2
  • At -8 °C: 9,600 BTU/h, with a COP of 2.56
  • At -15 °C: 12,000 BTU/h, with a COP of 1.89
  • At -30 °C: 5,800 BTU/h, with a COP of 1.08
  • Airflow of 365 CFM, cold climate designation

The certificate lists 9,600 BTU/h at -8 °C and 12,000 BTU/h at -15 °C. The two points are measured separately; we show each one as published. These values come from certificate AHRI 211497017, published by NEEP. The -8 °C point covers most of a North Shore winter: its COP delivers two and a half times the heat of a baseboard.

Fifteen amps in a panel that is already busy

The unit connects at 220 V, needs a minimum circuit ampacity of 15 A and is protected by a 15 A breaker on a dedicated circuit. On a 100 A service already loaded by baseboards, the water heater and the range, this rating is the difference between a project that can go ahead and one that waits for a service upgrade.

The $1,152 LogisVert grant

The system is listed in Hydro-Québec’s LogisVert program under ENERGY STAR ID 2410859, for a grant of $1,152 for the owner of an existing home. The amount follows the list in force on the installation date, and an increased grant applies to some multi-unit buildings. We prepare the file documents before you sign.

A glassed-in room in Deux-Montagnes: installing without marking the finishes

At the foot of the glass wall

The console sits on the floor, against the bottom of the wall, under the windows. The air it blows rises along the glass and cuts off the cold draft before it reaches the room. At 8.25 in deep, the unit fits behind an armchair, but the area in front of the grille stays clear: a long curtain that sweeps the air outlet sends the heat back into the cabinet.

Lines along the baseboard, and the drain

Connections are 1/4 and 1/2 inch. Our installations are fully surface-mounted, with no work inside the walls, and a finishing cover follows the baseboard to the wall opening. Condensate drains by gravity when the slope allows it; otherwise, we install a condensate pump.

Running the circuit to the panel

The circuit reaches the room through the basement or an unfinished ceiling, never through a painted wall. We check the panel load before proposing the installation, and any upgrade is disclosed before you sign.

What is normal, and the maintenance that follows

  • White vapour rises from the outdoor unit during defrost: the frost melts and drains away
  • A three-minute delay on restart protects the compressor
  • A short hiss follows start-up: the refrigerant is redistributing in the lines

A burning smell, a tripping breaker, a persistent error code or water inside are not on this list: turn the unit off and call our repair service. The rest is simple: filters rinsed every two weeks and an annual HVAC maintenance.

AirGreen is a family business that has been installing heat pumps for more than fifteen years in Montréal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore and the South Shore. We hold RBQ licences in ventilation, refrigeration and electricity, and our projects show consoles installed under glass walls.
