A heating season from October to April under a cathedral ceiling

In a Deux-Montagnes house with a cathedral-ceiling living room, heat builds up under the peak of the roof while the floor stays cold. A unit hung high on the wall makes the stratification worse, and an old air conditioner that has become noisy can be heard across the whole open room. The DURASTAR Standard 12,000 BTU R410A floor console heat pump works from the floor: it pushes warm air to the level where people live, and its filters stay reachable without a ladder.

The steps measured on the certificate

  • Seasonal efficiency of 22.7 SEER2, 13.0 EER2 and 10.2 HSPF2
  • At -8 °C: 9,000 BTU/h, with a COP of 2.69
  • At -15 °C: 8,400 BTU/h, with a COP of 2.26
  • At -25 °C: 5,500 BTU/h, with a COP of 1.64
  • Airflow of 365 CFM, cold climate designation down to -25 °C

These values come from certificate AHRI 207787139, published by NEEP, and the system is ENERGY STAR certified. The number to remember is the COP of 2.26 at -15 °C: even in the coldest third of the season, the unit returns more than twice the energy it uses, where a baseboard returns exactly what it takes.

The share of the year carried without backup

In Greater Montréal, the temperature drops below -25 °C on a few nights each winter. The rest of the heating season, from October to the end of April, falls within the range where the unit shows its best efficiency. We therefore install it as the main heat source for the living room, with the existing heating as backup for the peaks.

The $1,080 LogisVert grant

The system is listed in Hydro-Québec’s LogisVert program under ENERGY STAR ID 2410725, for a grant of $1,080 for the owner of an existing home. The amount follows the list in force on the installation date, and an increased grant applies to some multi-unit buildings. We put the file together with the detailed invoice and the model numbers.

Placing the condenser in a Deux-Montagnes yard

The console against the low wall

Under a cathedral ceiling, the console sits on the floor, against the low part of the wall, not under the high part of the gable. Its footprint of 27.56 x 8.25 x 23.62 inches stays discreet under a window. The horizontal airflow stirs the cold layer of air on the floor instead of adding heat where it already builds up.

The outdoor unit, at 53.5 dB(A)

The condenser measures 30.12 x 11.93 x 21.85 inches and runs at 53.5 dB(A), which matters when the old unit was replaced because of noise. We mount it above the snow line, on a ground stand or on brackets anchored in the structure, away from bedroom windows, including the neighbour’s.

Lines, drain and circuit

Connections are 1/4 and 1/2 inch. Our installations are fully surface-mounted, with no work inside the walls, under a finishing cover. Condensate drains by gravity or through a condensate pump. Electrical: 220 V, minimum circuit ampacity of 13 A, 15 A breaker and dedicated circuit, after a panel load calculation.

What is normal once winter sets in

  • Defrost releases white vapour outdoors and pauses heating for a few minutes
  • A three-minute delay on restart protects the compressor
  • Heating stops below -25 °C, the manufacturer’s limit, and the backup takes over

A burning smell, a tripping breaker, a persistent error code or water inside call for a shutdown and a call to our repair service. Otherwise, the filters are rinsed every two weeks and an annual HVAC maintenance covers coils, condensate and connections.

A family business for more than fifteen years, AirGreen installs and services heat pumps in Montréal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore and the South Shore. Our projects include cathedral-ceiling living rooms, where the height of the airflow makes all the difference. The in-home assessment is free.
