A Notre-Dame-de-Grâce sunroom you can use again in July

The enclosed porches of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce were designed for the shoulder seasons, then everyone ended up living in them year-round. Behind three walls of windows and under a low ceiling, the room climbs several degrees as soon as the sun turns, and the air stays heavy after a summer rain. The DURASTAR Standard 1st generation 12,000 BTU R410A floor console heat pump slips under the windows, cools and dries the room, and extends its use on both sides of summer.

The values published by DuraStar

  • Seasonal efficiency of 20.5 SEER, 13.0 EER and 8.8 HSPF
  • Dehumidification of 2.65 pints per hour
  • Airflow of 321 CFM, 37 to 48 dB(A) indoors
  • Heating of 7,200 BTU/h measured at -8 °C, limit set at -25 °C

DuraStar publishes no AHRI certificate for this unit; the values above come from its data sheet. The number that matters in a sunroom is the 13.0 EER: it describes efficiency in full heat, exactly when the sun hits the glass and the unit runs the longest.

Drying as much as cooling

In a sunroom, temperature is not the only problem. Humidity is what makes the room sticky in August and leaves fog on the windows early in the morning. The unit removes 2.65 pints of water per hour in cooling: the room cools down and loses its heavy air at the same time.

Why the listing shows $0

This system is not on the current list of heat pumps eligible for Hydro-Québec’s LogisVert program, which is why the spec sheet shows $0. We say so before the quote, not after. If the grant matters in your decision, we compare this model with the listed consoles in the range, and our financing options remain open either way.

Installing in a sunroom without touching the woodwork

At the foot of the wall under the windows

The console sits on the floor, under the sill, where the cold air of the sunroom settles in winter. Its footprint of 27.56 x 8.25 x 23.62 inches fits between two window frames without cutting into the walkway. We keep the strip in front of the supply grille clear: a bench, a cushion chest or a trailing curtain is enough to send the air back into the unit.

The wall opening, away from the mouldings

The opening goes through the solid panel under the window, never through a frame or an original moulding. The 1/4 and 1/2 inch lines then run down along the baseboard, under a finishing cover. Our installations are fully surface-mounted, with no work inside the walls, and the condensate follows the same path outdoors.

The dedicated circuit and its rating

Power is 220 V, with a minimum circuit ampacity of 12 A, a 15 A breaker and a dedicated circuit. A sunroom added after the fact is rarely wired for this: we check the panel load and disclose any upgrade before you sign.

Day to day in a glassed-in room

  • A three-minute delay on restart protects the compressor
  • Small cracking sounds come from the plastic cabinet as it expands and contracts
  • Heating stops below the manufacturer’s limit of -25 °C

A burning smell, a tripping breaker or water inside call for an immediate shutdown and a call to our repair service. In normal use, the filters are rinsed every two weeks, the outdoor unit is kept clear of leaves and snow, and an annual HVAC maintenance covers the coils, the condensate and the electrical connections.
