Replacing a window air conditioner in a glassed-in Candiac office

These figures are from certificate AHRI 215359273, as published by NEEP, and the system is ENERGY STAR certified. The 16.2 EER2 is the most telling value in an office: it describes efficiency in full heat, when the bay window turns the room into a greenhouse and the unit runs the longest.

What the replacement changes in the room

The window is sealed and clear again, the noise drops to 20 dB(A) at low speed, and the unit also heats, down to -25 °C. A window air conditioner stops in October; a console works all year and removes 1.1 pints of water per hour on humid July days.

The $0 LogisVert value

This model is not on the current list of heat pumps eligible for Hydro-Québec’s LogisVert program, which is why the spec sheet shows $0, despite ENERGY STAR ID 3621168. The 12,000 BTU size of the same series is listed: for a room approaching 450 square feet, the comparison is worth making. Our financing options cover the difference if needed.

Installing under the bay without marking the floor or the frame

The desk, the rug and the clearance

The console measures 31.26 x 7.87 x 24.45 inches and slips under the sill, next to the desk rather than behind it. We keep the strip in front of the grille clear: a filing cabinet or a thick rug pushed against the unit sends the air back into the cabinet and skews the temperature reading.

The opening and the baseboard route

The opening goes through the solid panel under the bay, never through the window frame. The 1/4 and 3/8 inch lines and the drain then run down along the baseboard, under a finishing cover. Our installations are fully surface-mounted, with no work inside the walls, and the hardwood floor is protected along the whole route.

A new circuit instead of the air conditioner outlet

Power is 220 V, with a minimum circuit ampacity of 12 A, a 15 A breaker and a dedicated circuit. The 15 A outlet that fed the window air conditioner is not suitable: we run a new circuit from the panel, after a load calculation, and the outdoor unit is mounted above the snow line.

Maintenance and service

• A three-minute delay on restart protects the compressor
• A short hiss follows start-up: the refrigerant is redistributing
• Heating stops below -25 °C, the manufacturer’s limit
