A suitable console under a sloped ceiling or in an attic room

We regularly encounter this scenario in buildings in the Greater Montreal area.

A bedroom under a roof sometimes has very short walls and a sharply sloped ceiling. Installing a conventional wall-mounted head near the ceiling becomes difficult or visually awkward.

Senville’s documentation states that it can operate down to -30 °C.

However, it is important to distinguish between the minimum operating temperature and the available capacity.

The data associated with the AirGreen product sheet indicates approximately:

9,800 BTU/h at -8 °C, 11,300 BTU/h at -15 °C, and approximately 4,800 BTU/h at -30 °C under the maximum listed condition.

The fact that the value at -15 °C may be higher than the value at -8 °C does not mean that the heat pump naturally becomes more powerful as the weather gets colder. Certifications use different test points and operating conditions for the Inverter compressor.

The important point is elsewhere: at -30 °C, the heat pump can still operate, but its available capacity is significantly lower than its rated capacity.

In a property where heat loss from the room reaches 8,000 BTU/h at -30 °C, the heat pump’s 4,800 BTU/h will therefore not be sufficient on its own. An auxiliary heat source may supplement the heating.

COP of 2.71 at -8 °C and 1.04 at -30 °C

The COP helps explain heating efficiency.

At approximately -8 °C, the product sheet indicates a COP of approximately 2.71. This means that under these conditions, the heat pump delivers significantly more heat than an electric resistance heater would produce directly for the same electricity consumption.

At -30 °C, the COP drops to around 1.04.

At this extreme temperature, the energy advantage over an electric resistance heater therefore becomes very small.

This is useful information for understanding why a heat pump's best seasonal efficiency is achieved mainly during the many hours when outdoor temperatures are moderately cold, and not only during extreme peaks.

Installation, drainage, and commissioning: the details that determine whether a floor console will actually deliver the expected results

The best location is not necessarily the wall closest to the condenser

A common mistake is to look first for the shortest piping route.

At AirGreen, we look first at air distribution.

A console should not be wedged behind a piece of furniture, an open door, or a large curtain. The space in front of the unit must allow the airflow to spread throughout the room.

In a bedroom, we also avoid directing a jet of air toward the bed whenever possible.

A low console makes drainage particularly important

Like any heat pump in cooling mode, the indoor unit produces condensation.

Senville documentation indicates a moisture removal capacity of approximately 1.48 L/h, or approximately 3.13 pints per hour.

This water must be drained properly.

With a high wall-mounted unit, we often have a significant elevation difference to create a natural slope toward the outside.

With a floor console, the situation may be more restrictive because the unit is already installed low.

We therefore examine the drain before confirming the final position. In some projects, moving the unit a few feet can allow gravity drainage and avoid adding a condensate pump.

This is a detail that can reduce noise, maintenance, and the number of components that may require future service.

R454B: the quality of the vacuum procedure remains essential

The SENVILLE console operates with R454B, with a published charge of 35.27 oz.

The system is precharged for up to 25 ft of piping. For a longer installation, Senville specifies that the charge must be adjusted according to the manufacturer's requirements.

Senville also indicates that professional installation is required to preserve warranty coverage and ensure proper operation.

R454B is an A2L refrigerant. We must therefore use procedures, tools, and practices compatible with this generation of equipment.

Commissioning includes, among other things, checking the connections, performing a leak test, evacuating the system, and verifying its operation in heating and cooling modes.

Piping: confirm the diameter for the exact indoor unit

Senville generally indicates that its 9,000 and 12,000 BTU units typically use 1/4 in. and 3/8 in. lines, but specifies that the dimensions must be confirmed for the exact indoor model when it does not appear in the standard table.

Optional Wi-Fi: useful, but confirm before ordering

Self-diagnostic and leak detection

This does not replace maintenance.

Hydro-Québec provides base assistance of $120 per 1,000 BTU/h at -8 °C for an ENERGY STAR cold-climate heat pump when the LogisVert program conditions are met. The applicable amount depends in particular on the installation date.

The corresponding calculation is:

9.8 × $120 = $1,176

This is the amount of the $1,176 provincial grant indicated for this configuration.

However, we systematically verify the equipment and the applicable rules at the time of the project, since Hydro-Québec may change its criteria, lists, and certain financial assistance options.

An important distinction concerning multi-unit buildings

Since June 15, 2026, Hydro-Québec has offered a specific enhancement that can increase the assistance to $220 per 1,000 BTU/h at -8 °C in certain eligible multi-unit buildings. However, this enhanced measure expressly targets ENERGY STAR – Cold Climate wall-mounted heat pumps in housing units meeting the program criteria.

A floor console should therefore not automatically be considered eligible for this enhancement simply because it shares heat pump technology with a wall-mounted unit.
