The Room the Existing System Never Managed to Heat

Every home has one. The bedroom above the garage, the rear addition, the basement finished ten years ago, the office set up in the former sunroom. The central system has always served them poorly, and eventually an electric baseboard was added with the thought that it would do the job.

The GREE Airy R32 12,000 BTU is the unit we install most often in these situations. A dedicated ducted system for the problem area, concealed in the ceiling, with its own grilles and thermostat - and energy consumption that is nothing like that of the baseboard it replaces.

Why These Rooms Resist

A room above an unheated garage loses heat through the floor, which no square-foot calculation captures. An addition built twenty years after the house sits at the end of the original ductwork, where the available static pressure has been exhausted. A finished basement combines a low heating load in winter with a high humidity load in summer, two conflicting requirements for a central system adjusted for the main floor.

In all three cases, the answer is not more capacity from the central system. It is an independent zone with its own unit.

Compared with the electric baseboard it replaces, the difference is straightforward: one kilowatt-hour becomes 2.8 kilowatt-hours of heat at -8 °C, compared with just one in the baseboard. In a room heated all season, the difference shows up on the bill from the very first winter. The unit carries ENERGY STAR's cold-climate designation.

$1,236 in Financial Assistance

Eligible for Hydro-Québec's LogisVert program for $1,236 for an owner of an existing home, with access to the bonus thanks to the cold-climate designation. This is the amount that applies to a single homeowner; the amount sometimes seen in brochures applies to the multi-unit housing component. We verify the figure using Hydro-Québec's official tool as of the planned installation date and prepare the application.

Integrating It into an Already Finished Room

Where the Unit Goes

Indoor unit measuring 32.67 x 29.69 x 11.81 inches. In a bedroom above a garage, the best location is generally a bulkhead at the top of the closet or a ceiling drop above the door. In a basement, the existing ceiling cavity is almost always sufficient.

The Ductwork

Maximum airflow of 353 cfm, lower than that of the 9,000 BTU unit in the same range - a consequence of matching the heat exchanger with the compressor, and one that requires a generously sized duct network. Few tight elbows, properly sized main sections, and an accessible filter. For two to three grilles and short runs, this airflow is more than sufficient.

The Filter

A ducted unit with an inaccessible filter is a ducted unit people eventually stop cleaning. We include an access panel with every installation and show you how to remove the filter during commissioning. This is the unit's only routine maintenance.

Condensate

Continuous slope to a drain, or a condensate pump with a safety switch that shuts off the unit before any overflow. We install this switch systematically: it costs little and prevents a ceiling from having to be redone.

Basement Humidity

Removal of 2.96 pints of water per hour. In a finished basement, this is often what the client was looking for without putting it into words: the musty smell that disappears, the damp chill of June that fades, and the portable dehumidifier that can be put away.

Acoustics and the Outdoor Unit

Indoor unit at 26 to 39 dB(A). Outdoor unit measuring 34.38 x 14.80 x 21.84 inches at 55 dB(A), with 1/4 - 3/8 inch connections. 220 V power supply, 11 A MCA and 15 A MOP, values recorded on the outdoor unit.

Airy is the name under which Dettson distributes this platform in Quebec; GREE Canada sells it under the name Extrême. Same outdoor unit, same certificate, same performance, same financial assistance amount.
