Reuse an Existing Duct Network

Many homes in Laval, the North Shore, and the South Shore already have a duct network left over from a forced-air furnace, sometimes out of service and sometimes still functional but energy-inefficient. The question we hear over and over is always the same: can the ducts be kept?

Often, yes - at least partially. The 18,000 BTU GREE Airy R32 moves 883 ft³/min and operates at high static pressure, allowing it to reuse an existing network where a low-pressure ducted system would not make it past the first branch. But a complete answer requires measuring rather than assuming.

What We Check on an Existing Network

How Much Airflow the Network Can Handle

An 80,000 BTU gas furnace may have moved 1,200 ft³/min through this network. An 18,000 BTU ducted system moves a maximum of 883. The network is therefore generally large enough - the opposite risk is the issue: oversized ducts create air speeds that are too low and poor reach in distant rooms. We rebalance the system, and sometimes reduce duct sections.

Sealing

This is the point that most often disappoints. A thirty-year-old network leaks into the crawl space or attic, and every percentage point of leakage is conditioned air that is paid for and then lost. Sealing the joints costs little and pays for itself faster than any efficiency difference between two units.

Return Air

Older forced-air networks often have one large central return. This works as long as bedroom doors have clearance beneath them. Otherwise, the closed room becomes pressurized and stops being properly served.

The Plenum and Connection

The indoor unit measures 44.48 x 29.69 x 11.81 inches. Connecting it to the existing plenum almost always requires a custom transition. This is a shop-fabricated part, not a catalog accessory, and it must be included in the quote.

$1,860 in Financial Assistance

Eligible for $1,860 through Hydro-Québec's LogisVert program for owners of an existing home, including the bonus. This is the highest amount in the range at this capacity, and it follows directly from the certified cold-weather performance. We validate it using Hydro-Québec's official tool on the installation date.

Replace the Furnace or Keep It

When the existing furnace is still working, the most robust configuration is to keep it as backup rather than remove it. The ducted system heats the home for almost the entire season, the furnace handles peak demand, and you retain a second heat source in case of a breakdown. We only remove an existing system when it is genuinely at the end of its service life or when the space is needed.

Comfort

Moisture removal of 3.80 pints per hour. Indoor sound level of 24 to 40 dB(A) - significantly quieter than a forced-air furnace, which starts at full speed or remains off. A variable-speed ducted system blows continuously at low speed, which also eliminates temperature swings between cycles.
