Two Levels Served by a Single Basement Unit

This is the most efficient configuration we install in renovations, and the most demanding to plan. A 24,000 BTU GREE Airy R32 housed in the basement ceiling cavity, a network of ducts rising through partition walls to the main floor, floor or high-wall baseboard grilles, and a central return. One machine, one compressor, the whole house.

The airflow of 1,030 cu. ft./min. makes this approach possible. Planning makes it viable.

The decisive figure is the last one. At -30 °C, the unit maintains 19,100 BTU/h with a COP of 1.81: it still delivers nearly twice the energy it consumes at the lowest temperature covered by the certificate. With ENERGY STAR's cold-climate designation, it is the unit in the lineup that comes closest to a primary heating system for a Quebec home.

$2,400 in financial assistance

This is the highest amount of all the ducted systems in our catalog under Hydro-Québec's LogisVert program, for the owner of an existing home. Hydro-Québec calculates the assistance based on certified cold-weather performance: it is the 19,100 BTU/h at -30 °C that produces this amount, not the unit's size. We validate it using Hydro-Québec's official tool as of the planned installation date.

What a two-level distribution system requires

The vertical route

Exterior wall studs should be avoided: heat is lost and condensation may occur. We prioritize partition walls, abandoned chimneys and stacked closets. We determine this route on site with you before preparing the quote.

Balancing between floors

Warm air rises: without balancing dampers, the upper floor overheats in winter and the basement remains cold in summer. We install accessible dampers on each main branch and adjust them during commissioning, then return to fine-tune them after the first season if necessary.

The return

At 1,030 cu. ft./min., an undersized return chokes the unit. Actual airflow never reaches its rated value, the grilles whistle, and the customer mistakenly concludes that the machine is too small. We size the return at the same time as the supply.

Bedroom doors

A trivial detail with real consequences: a closed bedroom without clearance beneath the door becomes pressurized and stops being properly served. Half an inch is enough, or a transfer grille.

The outdoor unit, a constraint to anticipate

39.38 x 16.81 x 29.38 inches: the largest chassis in the lineup. In the narrow backyard of a Montreal plex, clearances must be checked before committing, including the space required above for air discharge. Sound level: 62 dB(A), the highest in the lineup - the price of a compressor that keeps operating at -30 °C. Position it away from bedrooms and neighboring windows, on vibration-isolating pads.

1/4 - 5/8 inch connection. 220 V power supply, 26 A MCA and 30 A MOP, values listed on the outdoor unit. On an already loaded 100 A panel, a 30 A circuit may require an upgrade to 200 A: we inspect the panel before preparing the quote so that this cost, if applicable, appears in the estimate.

Service access, planned from installation

A unit housed in a basement ceiling must remain accessible: an access hatch for the filter, clearance in front of the service panel, and a safety switch on the condensate pan. An inaccessible ducted unit eventually costs more to service through drywall removal than in parts.

Comfort

Moisture removal of 4.23 pints of water per hour, the highest in the Airy series. Indoor unit sound level of 27 to 41 dB(A), with acoustic insulation on the first duct section when the unit is located beneath a living area.
